THURSDAY, VEti 12 1874.
S. A. MACMUIU'IIY,.
Jim Moore, of Nebraska City, Agrh
cultural Jimmy, hag loft the pleasant
fields ami pastures green of Otoe coun
ty and pone to Hotel keeping at Lin
,oln -Commercial House," formerly
Tlie "Douglas he keeps, and well
he'll keep ft too. No Moore, at pres
nt, James Yours &c Editor.
Miss Mary Jones, of Omaha, an old
friend, went and got married last week,
laarried a parson, too the Ifev. Mr.
fchirrell very fine man, everybody
nays, and as the IIekald married the
young lady to another person, by mis
lake, not long since, we now make the
amende honorable, and marry her to
the right one, only Ili.shop Clarkson
performed the ceremony, you know.
The last time we saw Miss Mary was
at the Grand Masonic Ball last No
vember, and what'll the parson say to
that when the next grand ball comes
around ?
The State Fair is finally fairly lo
cated at Omaha, for the ensuing year,
and all the North Tlatte papers are
ilrglng their folks to turn out and
make it a good one. Now South
Platte boys, wake up, take your truck
and your critters, and your manufac
tures, and your cheek up there, and if
we beat them on their own d
(door-yard soil we mean), why they
can't up and say it's favoritism, nor
South Platte lling, nor anything else
but their own fault.
Give them a lift, farmers of Cass,
nnd this is the only rivalry we ever
wish to see between South Platte and
North Platte in the State of Nebraska.
TOO FAST.
It is astonishinghow we drop behind
if we lose only a day or a week in this
fast age. Last week we could not pub
lish the regular news of the week as it
caine along to us in exchange and
otherwise; but we kept clipping and
noting items of interest, that we should
like to publish, and behold this week,
we have a drawer full of incidents,
news, personals fcc, that it would take
two papers to hold. Some few we
must insert to keep our readers posted,
and here they are in one mass: local,
editorial and everybody's column.
A LOT OF CHIPS HEWED OUT LAST
"WEEK.
Hilly Stadelmann's got a new white
hat with a black band on it. He's
mourning for Greeley yet, he says.
Jimmy "Wood, our short horn Jim
my, Was reported sick brain fever.
Neb. City News says he's the live-liest
pick man they ever saw, anyhow.
Capt. Palmer, the Insurance man, is
spreading himself about a good deal
of country just now. "We hear of him
somewhere, almost every paper we
pick up.
Ttto prominent citizens of Rock
Bluffs talk of making Plattsmouth
their future home, and starting busi
ness here. They complain of high
rents and ether expenses. Gentlemen
who own projcrty, remember the ex
perience of the past. Don't let a man
leave your town that's got "scads" to
invest in property, or business, unless
you have given him bottom figures on
your lots, houses, or rents.
S. Wood, of Greenwood, went to
mill at Hock creek, tied his team to a
plank; they fell to backing, got tangled
up. fell down, and one of them made a
pout mortem of himself, herself, itself,
in two minutes.
Our Representative, Judge Crounse,
has introduced a bill in regard to rail
road taxation, which if passed will put
an end to any exemptions from taxa
tion which railroad companies have set
up on the ground of not owning the
land. The bill itself will be, found in
another column
Nicholas Cox, of Weeping Water, a
Molid man of Cass county, called on the
Herald last week and took the county
paper and an Inter-Ocean in his.
The Way subscribers have rushed in
here for the Inter-Ocean since the first
fit January would indicate that the
Inter-Ocean is a good paper, and suits
the farmers, or it u the cheap rates we
offer on the same only $2.50 a year at
club rates with the Herald, and the
time is extended through February,
enly.
Since Gen, Thayer has turned up n
Lancaster county farmer, and made a
raise of a million pounds of oats, and
Tom Kennard has gone to Washington
on Agricultural business, and the Bee
newspaper. h:is got the working men
down on it; and Frank Welch is run
ning for Governor, north of the Platte;
and all the- temperance folks are fol
lowing RwsseH (not our Russell, you
know where he'd lead 'em) and singing
to the Uigur, beer men ; aixl Magnus M.
Nelson raised 91"- bushels of corn to
the acre, in. Cass county; and Dan.
Wheeler is editing the Omaha Repub
lican; and Faxon has come to town
with a stock - of dry Goods; and the
Ross trunk." was sold, and "Little Mac"
got two old books at a cent apiece, and
the breast-pads throwed in ; and Sher
iff Cutler is-after the delinquents; and
tn High Sch'X)! Organ is almost paid
for; aml all th-e-geheoJ mam's are hap
py; and the sleighTJding is almost
played out; and seranauing is almost
out of style; and Valentines are soon
in fashion and the Hekale i oift on
ije again ; and Tom Murphy is mar
ried'; and the State Fair is to be at
Omaha; and the back-pay steal has
died out and don't worry the newspa
pers any more; and winter is 'most
ever and our col bills are almost paid;
and all the prettj girls in Omaha got
roan-ied". lst week. We beg leave to
epngratnlate e very body and everything
abore mentioned, and not we start in
fair guI evep, fr :inotbev week.
COAL AT FRANKLIN.
One mile Southeast from Franklin
Franklin county, a good four foot vein
of coal has been found Und opened.
They are using it thereySnd the black
smiths say it beats Iowa'or Fort Scott
all hollow. This is said to be the fact.
Hurrah for Franklin. Who wants our
share now. Can't have it. Isn't for
sale, no. "
OUR GREEN WOOD LETTER.
Greenwood, Neb., Jan. 24, '74
Ed. Herald I need not speak of
the locality of this promising city,
situnted on the B. & M. R. It., in the
west part of Cass county, because it is
being well known to be the handsomest
valley and surrounded by the best and
handsomest farmig land in the west.
The farmers, as a class are of the very
best.
Nearly all of the B. & M. R. R. lands
are bought up in this township, and the
consequence is, that last season there
was about 5,000 acres of prairie broken
up, which will aid in establishing one
of the best grain markets on the line.
We need some good, enterprising
company, to carry on all kinds of mer
cantile trade. This is the best point I
know in the west. The farmers in
general are on an equality, and good
for their contract. At present there is
a spirit of reformation to shun the ap
pearance of all evil. The Good Tem
plars are adding much to the cause
they have lately organized, ancf have
now some sixty or seventy members.
They had a Festival last Thursday eve.,
22d ult. They met at the Congrega
tional church, but owing to the stormy
evening a great many did not attend
that otherwise would; however, it was
quite as well, as the house would not
have held all. It was crowded as it
was. The entertainment was amusing
to the ear, and we had a good supper,
and good music, which consisted of
vocal and instrumental piano accom
panied with two guitars. We have
scarcely ever attended a festival where
there was as much good humor and
cheerfulness as on this occasion. We
wish it would come again,
Bill.
PERSONAL.
Dr. Latta, formerly of Rock Bluffs is
in town, and reports his coal mines in
Richardson county turning out tons of
coal daily.
We see Hesser's "Ads." all over.
The little fellow must be going in for
.a big busines this summer.
The North Platte Enterprise, Peak
& Church, Editors and Proprietors,
dishes up some lively news now and
then for fellows that have a "meeting
house" in the office all the time; but
then they Peak(e) outside probably,
and get their fun there.
Mr. Schnasse is out and on the street.?
again, after a severe lay up of three
weeks. Better luck next time, friend
Schnasse.
Dick Cushing's home again from a
foreign shore" i. e. Washington D. C,
where he has leen banqueting, &c,
with the big bugs. Dick can just ban
quet with any of 'em. He's death on
conundrums.
Cap. Palmer paid the first taxes to
the city Treasurer and got receipts
Nos. 1, 2 and 3.
John Fitzgerald returned home
Wednesday from an extensive trip
south and east.
St. Valentine will be on hand Sat
day, and all the fellows and all the
girls and the old Saint are all on hand,
and some chaps wo know have bought
$50 worth of traps to send to their
sweet-hearts, and other men's.
Wm. Dickinson, of Cass count', and
late a resident of Elk Point, Dakota,
returns to Nebraska better satisfied
than ever, only he's going to try the
Republican valley, near Arapahoe next
time. Success to Win. D.
James Witham. Greenwood, book
agent, was around again, and left us a
very handsome volume of Bunyan's
works. Everybody ought to have it
not our copy, but one like it, you see.
S. J. Howell, Weeping Water,, called
on us not long sinoei Herald and
Inter-Ocean.
B. C. Yeomans, Weeping Water,
now, York State formerly, bought a
farm, called on the Herald and be
came a subscriber and a bona fide Ne
braskan. all in the month of January
last.
A 2D WARD SCHOOL GIRL'S COMPOSITION.
COLD WEATHER.
I do not like the cold weather; it is
so very unpleasant to rise early in the
morning, to do all the work at home,
before I start to school, for we Are fre
quently tardy. I wish that old clock
was going down the Platte river, or
some little boy would take it to slide
down hill on. And again when our
teacher is tardy the old clock tells on
him.' too. I wisli the clock would freeze
up, or the weather would grow warmer.
