They -waut to close this large invoice out at once, and will sell at nearly cost by wholesale 39t2 As we take up our exchanges one by one, we see in each and all tokens of the approaching festival of Christmas, Christmas presents and Christmas goodies. Christmas poems and Christ mas stories fill their pages, and as we look upon them all our mind goes back to the time when Christmas loomed up before us with all the golden splendor surrounding it, which only, childhood's ardent imaginations can portray. To the children more especially belongs this blessed festival, for does it not com memorate the birth of a child, albeit the Saviour of the world. To each and every one of the children then, whose homes lire invaded by the Herald do we wish a Merry Christmas, and may the stockings overflow with good things, add the Christmas trees glim mer aiid sparkle and groan under the weight of their treasures and may every child heart be equally full of joy and happiness, and with it all may be mingled a thanksgiving that Christ, the Lord is born' to-day. But we would not debar oui older readers, too, from the pleasures which Christmas should bring, and although for them the glamour and glow of a child's enjoyment is gone, they can yet extract much honey from the flowers of life, if they but will to do so. The father and mother in the enjoyment of their children will live over again their youthful days, and the solitary who are far away ?Foni home and kin dred, may they find some kind friend who shall share the fireside joys with them and make them think for the mo ment that they are home again. To each and all then of our kind patrons we wish once more a MERRY CHRISTMAS. P. 0. At the last meeting of the Common Council they authorized the City Treasurer to make an appeal through the Press to the citizens of Platts mouth in behalf of our taxes. By vir tue of such act, I now earnestly ask all good citizens to come forward and pay their taxes promptly. Some" uebts are due on the High School, and we need money badly to pay the salary of the teachers ; and. unless the .taxes aro paid, the city must raise money at a sacrifice in order to carry on the abso lute business of the. day.. All persons knowing thirrriselfes indebted to the city should comie to the front and pay a part, at least, if not all their indebt edness.
