His funeral took place from Masonic Hall. Plattsmouth, Neb., on Wednesday, Dec. 10th, 1873, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, a large attendance of brother Masons, being present. Deceased came to this country among the very earliest of her settlers, in 1S37, the historic year of the settle ment of Nebraska. He was a charter member of riattsmouth Lodge, No. G, A. F. & A. M., and also of Nebraska Chapter, No. 3. He died at the resi dence of his son, James Minshall, Jr., in Lincolon, Monday, Dec. 8th, and by his own special request, his body was taken charge of by his old and favor ite Lodge, No. G, of this place, and the funeral ceremonies were conducted by the Masonic fraternity of this city. Masonically, he was born A. L. 5803, was made a Mason 5824. and died 5873, thus being a Mason for 49 years, and probably one of the oldest in the State. He lived during the hottest times of the Morgan Anti-Mason raid, remem bered well the time when to be a Ma son was a disgrace, and life was unsafe. Many and oft was the time deceased walked seven miles to a Lodge held, literally as in ancient time, in secret places, in the mountain fastnesses or in some deserted dwelling. On hill, in d:ile, now here, now there. They nut upon the level and parted on the square. Of the charter members of Platts mouth Lodge, No. G, there are now left alive but four: Brothers "Wheeler, Por ter, Cummins and Marshall. Three are non-affiliated: Bassett, Donelan and Slaughter, and four are dead, viz: Brothers D. W. McCord, E. Williams, Harper and Minshall. THE FVXERAL SERVICES. All the Masonic bodies in this place assembled promptly at two o'clock at Masonic Hall. G. II. P. D. G. M., R. R. Livingston, as W. M. of Lodge No. 6, took charge of the proceedings. The R. A. Masons joined tho procession as a body and marched to the grave. W. M. Livingston then read the Masonic burial service in a very impressive manner, and the body of our brother was consigned to its last resting place from labor, no more to be called to re turn by any earthly Lodge. So mote it be; AT SCIILATER'S. All the following named gentlemen called on the Herald or sent their respects during the last week, and as we are short of space we notice the fact and thank you all in a lump: John Tidball, Crete; W. B. Southwelll, Elm wood; Thos. Feigh, Michigan ; II. W. B. Stout, Lincoln; Mr. Wm. Al taffer, Cass county; John Erickson, Paul Johnson, and Henry Larsen of Cass County. Call again, gentlemen, all; and many thanks for the little re minders of 3'our presence left in our before empty pocket book. Mr. Eddy Kirkpatrick made us a call on Monday morning. He in formed us that he was preparing to go to house keeping, and seemed very ju bilant over it. Mr. W. A. Webber, agent for the Chi cago Inter-Ocaan, called on us Tuesday. The Inter-Ocean is the Republican pa per of the Northwest, and has been a grand success thus far. About two year3 ago the people of the Inter Ocean got a notion they could make a newspaper midway between the great Atlantic and the calm Pacific, that would equal anything on either coast. To-day they have out-stripped all but one of their Chicago cotemporaries have long ago overhauled San Francis co, and are fast crowding on New York dailies in point of circulation and importance. Byron Mershon left us on Friday last for the happy land of Glenwood, Iowa. We do not know whether Byron likes the east side the best or what s the matter; but wo wish him good luck wherever he goes. He's been a good boy while here. John Fitzgerald, Esq., has returned from a somewhat prolonged absence in Wisconsin, where he has a largo con tract on railroading. He looks fine, fat and hearty, and is not yet willing to trade Nebraska for Wisconsin. Fitz is a judge, having traveled over half the continent, and we'll take his word be fore some of our old Wisconsin friends who think they conld'nt live in such an out of the way place as Nebraska. Hon. John Barnes is up, and well, almost, and made the Herald a very pleasant call on Monday. W. R. Mayfield is one of the best friends the Herald has. He comes to see us often, and always leaves a "sub." or two.- Geo. Hobson, one of the best boys from Mt. Pleasant, called on the Her ald Tuesday.
