The report of the ltock Bluffs School for tho moiith ending Octo!er" 6th, shows that in the Higher Department there were enrolled: males 13, females 19, making a total of 22. The average attendance was, males 9.9, females 14.7, or a total of 21.C. The number in the different branch es was .13 follows: Spelling, 32; read ing, 19; aritlunetie, 32; writing, 30; grammar, 12; geography, 13; history, 8; algebra, 7; and composition, 12. The following named scholars were hot absent during the month: Marcu3 "White, James Patterson, Emma Bri denstine, Jennie Patterson, Olie Jones, and Anna Mann. " The following were not tardy: Jen hie Patterson, Bella liamsey, Ada Lacy, Olie Jones, Ada Shera, Alice Lambert, James Patterson, Charley Graves, S. IS. Farthing, Ellen Graves, Laura Chal f ant, and Anna Fitch. The following named persons have visited the department during the month : 11 iss Myra Patterson, Mr. AVm. Hobbs, Dr. F. B. Roed, and Mr. C. II. Pinham, the two latter gentlemen be ing patrons of the school. These vis its occupied 240 minutes or four hours. -The enrollment in the primary de partment was as follows: males, 31 ; f cmaies, J3 ; totai, CO. The total aver-, nge attendance was ZS.G. PatronS of the school and friends of education generally, are cordially invi ted to visit tho school. ARlTiniETICr The prominence given to this branch in our public schools, would seem to indicate its importance over any other branch. Mathematics in general have been cultivated to a greater or less ex tent in nearly every age of the world. The ancients gave more attention to Algebra and Geometry, than to Arith metic. Indeed, it is only within the last half century that Arithmetic has asiwiusl that prominence in popular education which its importance would seem to demand. "We believe that it is eminently proper that Arithmetic should be the leading branch, especially in our public schools. Its tendency, particularly when taught analytically, 75 to .tti b pheT-t?Tinchg of - mathemat- ic3, is to derelopo ana strengtnen ine reasoning powers. The young mind is imurally prepossessed by it, because it seldom ever fails to see tho reason of it, that is of the example or principle. T.re have frequently heard objections ' urged agninst the early study of this t ranch. It has been frequently urged that children Shoved not be required or allowed to4 study Arithmetic Until they .-,tt. ofn certain age, say ten or twelve -T.sTNTil16 study of mathe- ii- L'iUiiiierry toren- d ?r the reasoning more exact, as wea a to strengthen tho powers of reason ing. A little familiar illustration will B'jon convince a very young mind that -Hwo and two mako four"; but why two and two tiiake four" rday not be s easily explained. - But to use a com mon expression the child "sees it," and . it would be difficult to convince it that mit . 1 J. ft . 1 i V. i r. ftTetn "two ami I wo uioue u tniu cue. The exactness and clearness of the fact . renders it less difficult to comprehend, 1 and thus it is with nearly all arithme tical investigations, - when conducted ffjw.VyXiwi. vm do. , notailns,. t&Tt there are abstruse principles and complex formula involved in the study of arithmetic, but wc claim, that the simpler elements may be taught chlld- i ren when quite young. The habit, which many teachers practice, of re quiring pupils to commit to memory the many arithmetical rules with which our text books abound, we deem rather a disadvantage thrin a help to the pu pils. The ready application of a rule : 'will, of course, enable a pupil to "work" nn example with dispatch, but suppose the rule to be forgotten and the prin ciple to have been unlearned, then there is no alternative but to fail; whereas; had the principle been learn ed arid the rule entirely neglected, the principle or principles being more easi ly retained, the ierson would have no difficulty in solving an example. This fact wa? strongly impressed upon our - -raind atone time during our experience in the school room. We had in our charge a class composed of members who had attended different schools, or rather we were engaged in organizing the class. An example wa3 given to cine, mt a request made that the rule by which the example was worked be' repeated, but a failure, either to repeat the rule or work the example was the consequence. "We next called another pupil and to him gave the same exam- pie and made the request, that the rule be repeated. The pupil acknowledged " his inability to repeat the rule but be lieved he could work the example. The example was worked and what seemed : more surprising the exarrplo was ana lyzed. "We refer to this incident to il lustrate our theory with regard to teaching arithmetic, and in conclusion we would say to teachers: "Do not burden the minds of your pupils with long and to, them meaningless rules. Better instruct them in the principles tipon which the rules are founded, and then even though the rule be forgotten, ' he principles enstamped upon the mind will remain. It is only in tbi3 - way that arithmetic aa taught to the young, can be made to remain in the memories of the children. The Kingston (X.
