Mr. Moses Stocking, of Saunders
county, clipped over 10,000 pounds of
wool this spring from his flock of
1.600 sheep. The fleece of one Yearling
weighed 17 pounds; of a two year old,
17; and this with no extra care.
Had he housed his sheep, as they do in
the East, he would have eclipsed Ham
mond's best. Can any county in this
State, or any State, show a greater av
erage from so large a flock.
BENEFICIARY SCHOLARSHIPS FOR
MEDICAL STUDENTS.
The Trustees of the Louisville (Ky.)
Medical College have created a num
ber of Beneficiary Scholarships, for the
benefit of poor but deserving young
men seeking a first-class medical edu
cation. One Beneficiary student is re
ceived from each Senatorial District of
any State, and one from each Congres
sional District of the different States.
Sons of the physicians and clergymen
are very properly accorded Beneficiary
Scholarships. Each Scholarship is
Worth to the recipient of it 8200, and
those receiving such aid are known
only to the Dean. Mode of obtaining
a Beneficiary Scholarship learned by
applying to Dr. E. S. Gallard, Dean,
Louisville, Kv. As the next session
begins in September, all young men
heeding aid should apply as early as
possible.

THE NEW TESRITORT
Was provided with a government, of
course, appointed by the powers "that
tWaa? at Washington, and ia pursurance
of their high and mighty functions,
Hon Frauds Burt, of Pendleton, South
Carolina, was sent here as Governor,
and T. Cuming, from Keokuk, Iowa,
as Secretary of State,
Gov. Burt arrived in August, 1834,
we believe, and the seat of Territorial
government was temporarily held at
Bellevue, on the Missouri river, just
north of the mouth of the Platte.
He acted as Governor for a short
two months, and died as we find the
first printed official document about
the hew territory to be a proclamation
cf the death of Gov. Burt, by T. B. Cum
ing, acting Governor, and it is dated
Bellevue, Oct. 18th, 1334.
Burt County is named after this our
first Governor, and we have a county,
city, streets and creeks named after
our first Secretary, Tom Cuming.
The next act of Executive? authority
that we have any knowledge of is a
proclamation ordering the census of
Nebraska to be taken, forthwith It is
dated October 21st, ami . the United
States Marshals are directed to make
their returns by "the 20th of November
next," directed to the acting Governor,
Cuming, at the Mission house, at
Bellevue.
The proclamation declares that'im
mediately after the returns of said cen-
sus ati election lor ueiegate to con
gress and for a Territorial Legislature
will be held. The United States Mar
shal under whose direction this first
census was taken, in the American
Desert, was Mark "W. Izard, afterwards
Governor. The first Marshal appoint
ed was Doyle who fell down dead
shortly after his arrival in the Terri
tory, of heart disease.
The first Chief Justice of the Terri
tory, who administered oaths, was the
Hon. Fenner Ferguson.
This census was an odd sort of com
putation, and to draw it mild we may
safely say would not give a very cor
rect idea idea of the number of inhabi
tants, much less of the real number of
voters. Xo printed record of its re
turns are to be found ; and on exam
ining the old papers at Lincoln, they
are very irregular. 'So totals are given
except by one Marshal. The columns
on each page under the heads of "Xo.
of male white persons over 21, &o," are
put down in lead pencil, and most of
the deputies apiend a trite little note
to their reports, about like this: "sup
posed to be 40 votes in this district,"
or 50, or 60, as the case called for;
some figuring in lead pencil on a blank
census return, seeded to be all the to
tal returns there. Yet this census
shows us some interesting facts.
There were six districts.- The first
district was taken by W. T. Sharp, and
part of its boundaries reads like this:
from the Mo. river west 100 miles be-1
t ween' the Little Xemaha and the 40th
parallel; it seems to have contained
832 inhabitants. Five slaves are put
down and he thinks there are 74 vo
ters at one point in the district.
The Second District was around
Brownville and old Ft. Kearney (Ne
braska City), Chas. B. Smith took the
census; there were G09 inhabitants by
the best footings we can make. Nine
slaves are reported, and he recommends
that two counties should be made of
the same, and that the southern one
would contain 60 voters.
The Third contained 327, and the
first free colored gentlemen appear
here.
The Fourth took in Omaha and sur
rounding regions, and contained 709
inhabitants.
The Fifth was up about Fontenelle,
and is set down for 122 persons.
The Sixth was north of Ft. Calhoun,
over in the Elkhorn, and counts up 159.
The whole population then was esti
mated at 2,778, of which no papers we
could find show the total Xo. of voters,
but as there are 008 white males over
21, you may all guess at the legal voters,
although it is but fair to tell you that
current rumor says the Deputies gen
erally limited up the best quarters in
the District, and sat down with the
boss of the ranch over a jug of good
whisky while he guessed off the
number of neighlors alxmt there; and
in one place (out west?) they found an
old Frenchman near a ferry, and asked
him how many men passed along daily,
and from th'at they figured out how
many people must " have come into or
through the Territory that season and
set them down as inhabitants. - .-
The fifth column of these census re
turns calls for the number of females
under 16 years of age, and we want to
tell you that the figures in that column
are few and far between, and in some
districts none.
The returns were evidently alt made
by the 20th of November, for on the
21st the acting Governor ordered an
election, and gave temporary bounda
ries to the different counties ''for the
purposes of this first election, and sub
ject to alteration by the Territorial
Assembly."
The counties given with their ap
portionment, was as follows:
Burt, 1 Councilman and 2 Repre
sentatives; Washington, 1 Councilman
and 2 Representatives; Dodge, 1 Ccun
eilman and 2 Representatives; Doug
las, 4 Councilman and 8 Representa
tives; Cass, 1 Councilman and 3 Rep
resentatives Pierce, 3 Councilman and
5 Representatives ; Forney, 1 Council
men and 2 Representatives; Richard
son, 1 Councilman and 2 Representa
tives. There was a tie from Pierce county,
and the acting Governor ordered a spe
cial election.-
In the meanwhilethe seat of govern
ment had been moved to Omaha. The
last actcf Gov. Cuming dated at BeHe-
vue, was 23d Nov., 1854, and the next
is the special election dated Omaha,
Dec 15th, 1854 On the aotb of the
same month, tho time for holding the
first Legislative Assembly of Nebraska
was fixed, and the members elect of
the Council and House of Representa
tives were ordered to convene at Oma
ha, January 16th, 1853, at 10 a. r.
At the same time, (December 20)
three Judicial Districts were set apart,
and the assignment of our' first Judges
made: They were: Hon. Fenner Fer
guson; 1st District; Hon. E. 13. Hardin,
ad District : Hon. Jos. Bradley, 8d Dis
trict ; and the first court set for the
next March, at Bellevue, Douglas coun
ty.
THE FIRST REGULAR SESSlOX Or TllE

was elected lirst President of the first
Council of the first Legislative Assem
bly in this Territory. Isaac R. Alden
and Geo. L-. Miller had each C votes for
Clerk, and the election was adjourned
for several days Samuel Marks, of
Cass, acting as Clerk pro tern. On be
ing brought up again Miller received 7
votes to Alden's 6, and was declared
duly elected. Thus early does the
name of G. L. Miller, now Editor of the
Omaha Herald, appear upon the records
of Nebraska.
O. F. Lake was elected Assistant

and N. R. Folsom, dorrkeeper, and the
