fice, this sentence occurs: "I think

Messrs. Hubbard & Beards'ey are put
ting up a large grist mill on tho Weep
ing Water, about one and a half miies
above the Fall.?. They expect to have
the mill completed and in running order
by the first of August next. Such im
provements as these do much to build
up the county.
It isj claimed that after Senator Sum
ner had prepared hl.-s French Arms reso
lution, he handed the same to hi.3 col
league with the remark : "Grants re

Indiana gains one member of Con
gress by the new apportionment, who
will be elected by the vote of the State
at large. The Republican. have nomi
nated Godl ove fc. Oi'th, for this position.
Tom. Brown has been nominated for
The State Convention for the election
of six delegates to the National Repub
lican Convention, will be called about
tha 15th of May. Each organized
county will send cm delegate, and one
additional for every 100 votes for Taffe,
or major fraction thereof.
Mr. W. J. Ilorton, of Weeping
Water, was in town to-day. Mr. Ilor
ton has one hundred and fifteen acres in
winter wheat which he think is unia
jured by ths weather. We hope to hear
similar good reports from all.
Tho report that Acting Governor
James is likely to call an extra session, is
probably not true.
Cuming County has voted $30,000
for Court House and Jail.
A t-team saw mill has been located at
Franklin, the county seat of Franklin
county, and will be in operation early in
the spring. Parties here will take a
store there as soon as the weather will
permit. E. A. Kirkpatrick of this
county ia now there looking after the in
terest of tha town.
The Central Star says: "Already
the bridge builders at the Kearney Rail
road Bridge have an engine driving the
immense hammers thatare.pounding the
large piles into the sandy bed of tho
Platte River. But that is not enough
two other engines are oa their way to
Kearney ta push the wcik along. The
B. &: M.'R. R. Company mean busi
ness, and it will not be long before the
bridge will to completed."
The c.ity authorities have authorized
the construction "of crossings and a side
walk on Sixth street. This is a move in
the right direction but falls short of the
requirements cf the people. There
should be a sidewalk oa Viue street, an
other oa Second and 31 St., south of
Main, and one on Sixth st. south. We
do not -rc-couimend anything expensive,
but juit enough sidewalk to keep tho
taxpayers out of the terrible mud.
SEW TI!ANSiU KOAT.
The B. & M. R. R. Co. in Neb. have
an entirely new 'boat building at Madi
son on the Ohio River for business at
this point, and she is expected here in
sixty day. She will be buiit in the
most substantial manner to meet the re
quirement which the exigencies cf the
business ou this Road demands. She
will have a center track capable of traus
fsring two passenger aud one baggage
ear, or five freight cars at each trip.
Her engines are of tho most substantia
character, and she will undoubtedly
prove the finest craft of the kind on this
river. The B. & M. Co., with that pru
dent business forethought vhieh has al
ways distinguished them, have seen the
business of their road growing with an
almost unparalleled rapidity, and propose
to be ready for the still greater increase
which wiil immediately follow their con
nection with the U. P. R. R. at J ort
Kearney. The transfer at this point the
approaching season will be many times
greater than ever before. Soon Piatts
mouth will call for a "hud timbrel con

The murmur is loud and reaches us
from every quarter that the farmers of
Nebraska are becoming slaves to for
eign manufaciures. Tha absolute re
turns in cash for the grains raised in this
State ari nearly balanced by the "pay
ments to foreign manufacturers. We
ask a patient investigation of the facts,
and it will be found the Threshers, Har
vester?, Headers, Reaper?, Mowers,
Seeders Cultivators, Drills Plows,
WagOLS, and all sorts of 'Vooden Ware?,
are obtaiued froui abroad, when they
could readily be manufactured in Ne
braska. We ship hid-'s abroad and im
port our leather buying the pame hides,
after passing through foreign tanneries,
at a heavy profit to the foreign djalor.
Numerous other atticle3 which could
readily be made at home are imported,
and the result is that while the hard
working farmer is doing hi utmost to
relieve hi.? itiJebtediii-ss, he is really
woiking fir foreign manufacturers.

The City Council passed, last evening,
an ordinance creating Chicago, Wash
ington and Lincoln avenues. The want
of these highways has long been felt by
our city, sT.d should they be opened, as
they ought to be, s-oon, the wisdom of
t-hee measures wid soon be made appa
rent, by the advantage they wiii give all
parts cf our city. They arc all natural
approaches from the country, ami once
laid out and side walks and crossings
made, will form the most beautiful
streets of the cit3 Let those having in
charge the securing cf tho right of way
attend to tho matter at once, that they
