The Grand Duke Alexis gaTe $50 to the engineer ef his special train on the Kansas Pacific Road, and $25 to each of the train men. Always trade with the men who ad vertise most. They have more public spirit than those who do not advertise, and will give you better bargains. The ice dealers of our city are buy putting up ice for the coming season. The quality of the ice in better than it has been for a number of years past. St. A. D. Balcombe snys he will stay with Dr. Miller in the "history business all winter" and before he is through Miller will see "who is who." District Court, adjourned last JSatur day, until Monday, February 12th at 1 p. m. At which time a short term will be held for the purpose of hearing mo tions etc. Tho Glenwood Opinion says that "Council Bluffs, Plattsmouth and Red Oak have stroll pox." Nary case here, brother, nor has there been this winter. Please make the correction. There is asocietv in Council Bluffs called the "Pillow Society,'' who arc opposed to dancing, card playing and like amusement. The object of the ociety will probably be made known soon. Hon. Jaa. F. Wilson is spoken of by a portion of tho Iowa Press as a candi date for the- v ice Presidency. It is said that Mr. Wilson desires the re nominstion of General Grant, and is rot an aspirant for the first place on the ticket. What has become of our high school project ? Does the city propose to make it a failure? Ot! cr towns n&t larger than Plattsmouth have thirhigh school buildings and we certainly should not be behind them in this matter. Doolittls, of Wisconsin h in New York, to get aid in forming a ticket in opposition to Grant, with Lyman Trutn bull at its head. This man Doolitlle went off on the Johnson chute, and has been ?ick ever since. He will probably meet the same success there, that he met in Wisconsin when a candidate for Gov ernor, on the Democratic ticket. Two new claimants for the honors con nected with the transfer question, Messrs. Savage and Manderson, the gentlemen who drew the present contract, come be fore the uublic to-d3V. in St. A. L. Bal- corab's card. If Omaha baa got all she asks that ousht to be sufficient and we presume tho people of that city eo regard it. No cards. The revival at Conn's Chapel, In this countv. ia at ill nrogressinsr ; and under the cupcrvision of Reverend Kenaston, S warts, Smith and others, is dning a good work. It is thought it will close ita labors to-morrow. The revival is being held by the denominations of Uni ted Brethren and Methodist. The Con gregationalists just closed a revival at Greenwood, with the best of success. Tbe Nebraska Atlas, published at Seward, has been enlarged to an eight column papor, and an extra handle added to its title. It is now called by the heart-rending appellation of "The Ne braaka Atlas and People's Journal," and OMjar Ingraham, A. M., assumes Bole proprietorship and editorial coutrol. It is quite an interesting paper, and wil probably succeed well if tho name does not prove too much for it. We are in receipt of a cory of that valuable litte book, the Tribune Al manac, for 1872. It contains more val uable information lhan any other book of its size in the world. No man who desires to be well informed can afford to be without it. Ilesser left at the Herald sanctum to-day. a quantity of very fine lettuce and rhubarb. Ilesser is the most sue cessful gardener and florist in the West. The Burlingtcn Hawk-eye makes the fo"owi2g statement relative to the ap prehension of a great flood this ppring, by persons living along the Missouri river. "Since the discovery of the Mis issippi from Alton to Cairo, the floods have swept all the ground froui bluff to bluff several times. In 1712, 1724 and 17S3 boats sailed over the botton from St. Louis to Kakaekia; in 1826 th .re was a great flood, but that of 1S44 ap pears to have been the worst. On the 27th of June in the last mentioned year, the river at St. Louis wa thirty-eight feet 6even inches above low water mark and that was after a winter (similar to the present. So we must look out for a wetting. People who live on the bot toms will take notice and prepare for the worst. A fire in Denver yesterday destroyed the livery stable of a Mr. Eftabrook, burning about sixty horses and nearly all of his carriages and buggies. Loss about $40,000, with no insurance. Edward Wilson, Ticket Agent of the B. & M. in Nebraska, left for Boston a day or to since. , Thos. Marsland takes hia place. This u a deserved promotion. A sad cae of freezing occurred be tween Lincoln and the vicinity of Green wood during the severe cold spell of last Saturday, the particulars of which are about as - follows : Saturday morning opened clear and warm, and a party of settlers near Greenwood started, with teams, early in the morning for Lincoln, ittle dreaming that the day would turn out to be one of the coldest and mot disagreeable of the winter. 0n tbeir way home, the weather getting colder and colder, the party began to chill and freeie. One person had his hands frozen no badly that it i thought amputation will have to follow. Another had hii feet frozen, and is suffering severely. A third person had his head and a portion of his body eo badly frozen that his re covery is despaired of. Oihers were con siderably "frostbitten," but not seri ously. Paul Hill came in from Kearney yes terday. The Leap Year party last eveniog, at Fitzgerald's Hall was a complete success, both socially and financially. Hon. J. B Grinnell, of Iowa, pub- ishes a disorganizing letter which is be ing published by every Democratic paper of that State of course. Corn at Qttumwa, Iowa, brings 24 to 25 cents cah. They have railroad com petition. The B. Si M. in Iowa will run a train east to morrow evening at usual time. No trains will be run over either the R. . or C. & N. W. The report of the Grand Jury pub ished elsewhere, is certainly a very flat tering one for Cass county, and sneaks well of the condition in which the jail is kept by Sheriff Johnson. We doubt if another county m th State can produce as clean a record. Horace Greeley has written a letter to Wm. E. Chandler Secy Republican National Committee declining to sign the call for the Republican National Convention next June. This would look as though Horace had a slight idea of becoming a candidate for the pim- vists providing they bhould want him. A man who has to advertise his Re publicanism at lca?t once a week in the columns of his paper, may well be doubted. This is the position of Mr. Thomas, who for the time being controls the col umns of the Omaha Tribune and Re publican. The case of the artist who labelled his production, "This is a cow, might be equally applicable ia this case, and we would suggest that Mr. Thomas insert a standing advertisement in his paper, at the head of the editorial col umns, headed "The editor of this paper is a Republican." The following is the article to which the gentleman takes such grave excep tions: "The Omaha RepuVican favors the nomination of Henry A. V iwon lor Vice President in preference to Schuyler Colfax. This does not insure Mr. Wil son's nomination, however." In his reply he says; "The editor of tbe Plattsmouth Herald may as well un derstand now S3 ever that lie has carried his causeless pcrsonalenniity and base insinuations touching our political posi tion und utterances as far an he can." This dazzling meteor who is so sensi tive in regard to his political reputation, who asks "absolutely nothiug" from his party except to be censidered "honest and consistent," don't propose to stand abuse any longer. N e would f uggesl that he procure a certificate from His xct ing Excellency as to his republicanism and when ho gets it travel. A fire in Nebraska City, yesterday, de stroyed the residence of Edward Shel don, Ticket Agent ef the C. B. & St. Joe R. R. Insurance $2,300 . The Hon. J. I. Redick publishes Crtrti in the Republican telling what he knows about the transfer question. Who is the next brother to give in his experience, and'lay claim to tho hon or of settling this question ? The Iowa Legislature has passed a Joint Resolution asking Congress to in quire into the action of the Union Paci fic Company in regard to their Eastern terminus. The Chronicle thinks thero is a fair chance that the Nebraska City Common Council will pass the Salt Land Bil which was recently defeated in the Leg islaure. - A snow plow, driven by two engines, on the U. P. R. R-, ran into the rear of an emigrant train last Monday, doing considerable damage, but fortunately no lives were lost. St. A. D. Balcombe is out in anotber card, in which he speaks of some of the peculiar characteristics of Dr. Miller the timbrel man. "Your little hands were never made," etc- Mr. Charles Parker, a well known auctioneer of Omaha, committed suicide last Tuesday by shooting himself through the head with a revolver. Pecuniary difficulties are supposed to have been the cause, lie had resided in Omaha for six year, and was respected by al who knew him. D. N. Smith has been stopping ia town for the last day or two. The Lincoln Journal rays that hisg.2t ing Excellency threatened the veto of Hascall's famous "county" bill, unles; one was called "James." - The proprietors of the Platte Valley In dependent have been "doubling up" their paper. It comes out as a quarto, with Chicago inwards to the paper. It the paper is edited with ability by Mr. and Mrs. Seth P. Mobley. Parties cutting ice on the river say that there is sixteen inches of solid ice in places where they have taken it out once befo-te this winter. This is good freezing, even for Nebraska. It is thought, by those best acquainted with the mountain regions, that the waters of the old muddy will becom exceedingly elevated during the coming season.
