The Post a-ks for a general investigation, not only into present appointments, but also into past transactions. J. Sterling Morton has "struck a new lead" in a political way, which beats all the "new departure," and "passive pol icy" idea. He sugtresds a way of beating Grant fur President, that we ad mit looks more like success than anything we have yet htard. He proposes that the "resolve" and "whereas" democra cy immediately assemble in National con vention and nominate Gr int for Presi dent. If that don t kill him we are at a loss to know what would. Sterling ought to know,' for he has been nominated by them! An exchange pays : "Men who do not believe in advertising are about the first ones to Hish to the editor when they get into a scrape, to get him not to mention it." We account for thU State of facts on the ground that the men who ''do not believe in advertising" are the ones who follow a business that iclfl not he'ir ailvcrtisiny ; hence they are perfectly correct in keeping it in the dark as much as possible. Keep away from the men who are afraid to advertise those who "do not believe in it." Sumner has introduced a proposed amendment to the Constitution of the United State?, which provides, that no person who has held the office of Ptesi dent of the United States shail bo there after eligible to that office; paid amend ment not to fake effect until after the 4th of March, 1S73. We saw 3Ir. Farmer acrain to-d:ty, and he stated that since yesterday eight more of hi cattle had died, ruakiug twenty five he has lost within the last five days. Two more ho was unable to find, and he believes that they are also desd. He only keeps them in the stalk field a por tion of the time now, and hopes to save a portion of the balance by si change of food. We are in receipt of the first number of the Lincoln D-ii'i Statesman, pub hshed at Lincoln Neb. by Randall & Smail. It '13 Democratic in politics, though of the passive order, and presents a very readable and neat typographical appear ance. The SchuyKr Register pays the 15. &, M. K. II. Co. the following compliment They have agents in every State in the Union, and in every nation on earth, who are alive to the interest of the road, and who .work up colonies for this State who settle along its line and on its lands. No mechanic, in ventor, fi.ru'.er. engineer, chemist or man ufactnjer can do without it. After a long discussion, the House has finally passed an apportionment bill, which the Senate will probably not in sist on amending. It fixes the ratio of representation at 133,000 inhabitant", without which no new State is to be ad mitted, thus cutting off lor the present Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. The membership of the Hou-o is fixed at 283, taking one representative each from New Hampshire and Vermont, and in crca-ing the representation as lo!!ows: Illinois, five, tho largest gain of ail, making its total nineteen ; Massachu setts, New York, MarylanJ, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ala bama, Mississippi, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Arkansas, Califor nia and Minnesota, one each , New Jer sey, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Texas, Cali fornia and Kansas, two each ; Iowa and Michigan, three ; and Missouri lour The bill provides that no State tdiall be hereafter admitted without a population great enough to entitle it to cue repre petative upon the new basis. The Nebraska Lnml Arjcnt for Decem ber is out, full cf choice read ing matter. This sheet isdoinK much advertise the State, and is being ex ten sively copied by real estate papers in oth er parts cf the world. Mr. Farmer (wrongly printed yester day, as Palmer), called on us last evening aod stated that eight more of his cattle had died, and that several more would probably be dead by this morning. There seems but little doubt now thar the disease is caused by the cattle eating too hearty of dry corn stalks which con tained more or less smut. Our readers will recollect that some time since we pub'i-hed a statement fr.mi the Fremont Tribu.ie that a number of cattle had died in that vicinity from the same cause. In the sections of country visited by the hail storm. last summer, this smut i" found in considerable quantities. Mr Farmer proposes to remove his cattle and sec if he cannot cheek the disease by changing their feed. These cattle were all young, tha lots is a severe one III' Sih. There are nrny people who are of opinion that tha Legislative adjournment was to the second da' of January. This L ;s a mistake lne Adjournment was to the ''Sfcowt 7utsil;tts" which is tho Vzh day of January. OPES TO BEATRICE. The O. !t S. W., in connection with the Ii. & M. at Crete, is now open, and regular trains from this city commenced running last Wednesday. This gives our city direct daily connection by rail with all the rich farming regions of the Blue river country, the thriving towns of Beatrice, Crete, and the entire coun try west along the line of the B. & -M. SIOCS! IIOUS!! We are paying tho highest market prices for good fat hogs, delivered in Piattsmouth, ou foot. Farmers having fat h-.gs will consult their interest by calling on us before. selling. WHOLESALE. Two or three good exclusively whole sale houses are badly needed in this city. It certainly requires no extended argu ment to prove this fact, and yet it seem that it is not fully comprehended by the men who have the trean.j "to embark in business of this magnitude. The exten sion of the B & M. II. 11. into the in terior makes this point especially desira ble for wholesaling A single whole sale Grocery House ia this city would command almost the ertirc trade of tho interior of the South Platte country, which must go elsewhere unless there is a harbor for it here. There is. no reason why rbttts mOuth thoul j not furni.-h goods to all the merchants 0:1 the lino of the B. & M , or within reach of that road. Goods can be sold here as cheap as at ;ny placo west of Chicago, and all it lacks is for souse man with sufficient means to take hold of it ii. a 51. k. 1:. xr.a;: isu t. This excellent ro?td is reaching its iron arms out into the interior of Nebraska. Since our last issue they have completed a line from Crete down the Blue to Beatrice, and will, on the 1st of January, commence running regular trains. They have also the control of the Omaha and South We.-tern B B. and will, on and after the 1st of January, run trains on that road in connection with the trains on the main line. Great credit is duo the ofileers in charge of the ron 1 for (lie piompt r.nd gentlemanly manner in which its hui-iness is conducted, and par ticularly to Col. Thus. Ac6 Land Ajct. In the Omaha JJerall of last Wed nesday we find the item from the L:n coin Sf'ittsniaii relative to the confirma tion of State title to the Salt Lands, to which is appended the following, as cdito tial : '"It seems to bgin to appear that Morten lias some rights there which ail parties are bound to respect. Editohs Herald : Seeing I am vis iting nearly every locality of note in our State, this winter, and have an opportu nity of noting any items of interest that may come under my observation, I may report them anon to your interest ing paper. I hit Piattsmouth on the 15th inst,, for this place, where I am taking orders for one of the completest Family Bibles soU in our land : but design returning to Piattsmouth to spend the Holiday, and also to enjoy the fine Masonic Festi val and public address by P. G M. R. W. Furnas. As near aslcanlearn.it v'.il be the Masonic gathering of this ju risdiction on this St. John's day; and as brethren from vaiicus portions of the State will be there, I would be much pleased to meet a general gathering of the citizens of my town, to witness the public installation of tho officers of Plait-mouth Lodge No. C, and especially to hear the address referred to above. The trains on the K. C- St. Joe. & C. B. R. R., are well patronized for the time of the year. Between Bigelow station and Ru!o, a ilUtance of ten miles, by stage, 1 saw what cur driver calls a volcano. It has been burning steadily over three months. A crate filled with a volume cf smoke warns one of approach or any attempt to ascend the summit. Calculation has been made, and it is ascertained that it will become extinct about twelve months from this time. It is near the "Big Lake," in Holt Co., Mo. As one looks at it he is filled with wonder, and seems surprised that wher- they tore that old mill down they did not the.n fire that "pile of saw dust." Tho novelty of the crossing of "Old Mudly," s.t Huh), is entertaining. A cut through the ice, one foot wider than the eld "flat," conducts you for once straight across the river. A man on the right aud auother on the left walk on the ice and push the boat and its load across. The next item of interest to tho trav eler is a seat in the dining-room of the "Ohio Ilou.-e," in Rulo. This house is kept by Messrs. Davis &. Van Lot t, and I see they spare no pains to make trav elers comfortable and at home. I am now borne in a fine 'bus to the depot of the Atchison & Nebraska Railro.d. This depot is evidently a temporary af fair, as it is only a box car surrounded by a platform. In it we found a bag gage apartment, aa office, a stove, a waiting room, seats, &c., and whatever the traveler complains cf, he is sure to not complain of too much room. This road is running some very fine rolling stook, and is destined to do much to ward the development of this portion of our fine State. My home in Falls City is at the City Hotel, kept by T. J. Collins. Mr. C. is a jerfeet centleman, and his fashionable tables are well fii'c i with cheerful pat rons, lie, with his amiable lady, know ju-t how to make one fe 1 at home.
