The Grand Jury f the Court of Gen
eral Ses-ions, yesterday found indietmo it
against Win. M. Tweed, IS. li. Conno'ly,

in the Court of General Sessions at 11
o'clock to-'lsy, and tho question of bail
will then be settled.

of General Sessions this morning, to wit

Sheriffs, and accompanied by John Gra
ham, ex-Judge Fuiler'on and David
Dudley Field as counsel. II appeared
nncouccrned, but immediately entered
into consultation " with his counsfd.
District Attorney Garvin announced his
readiness to proceed to trial. Graham
asked an extension of time to plead.
Garvin had no object ion in giving reasonable-
time, the prisoner, meantime, being
committed in the usual way. Time was
granted, and Tweed sent to the Too tubs
prison to await a hearing in his ev.S'j as
to whether br.il will le allowed.
Later. Judge Barnard has just grant
ed a writ of habeas corpus to bring
Tweed before htm immediately, on a
motion that bait be idlowi-J.
Thcvo was great excitement among
the politicians over the action of the
grand jury and the arrest o Tweed.
Judge Barnard, this afternoon, admitted

Penitentiary gathered at tho South gate
of the Prison yard .and at the precon
certed signal, the ringing of th;; 4 o'clock
bell, they rushed at tho gate with a pick
that they had concealed for the purpose,
and in a moment broke through the bul
wark of boards and ran a race for libety.
The warden and guards were on their
tracks in an in.-tant. Two of the five
ran across a cornfield and sruck into a
ravine south of the building, while the
other three took a south easterly direc
tion up the hill One of the three was
of African extraction and the most act
ive of the flying ciowel, but a chance shot
from the guards coming in close proxi
mity to his left car, he halted, threw up
his hands and succumbed. The other
four were pursued by the guards atid af
ter a most exciting and protracted foot
race were overtaken and brought Lack
to ruminate-over their bad luck in their
ceils.
Much credit is due to Warden Camp
bell, the Deputy Warden, and the guards
who were so prompt to prevent this
wholesale escape.
-Three other convicts, when the gat
was broken, started cm a run for the
t reach.. The Deputy Warden, however,
was the swiftest on foot, and urrived
there in time to head them off. Then
they said they "were not trying to get
away, but thought there was a fight down
at the gate."

past we hare been regularly rejoiced on

the "bonds of wedlock" in Cass county,

more couples are j . lined in said wedlock.
It. does seem as if a yours couple could
get married down in your city without
our having our potaffjcs and oher veg
etables all frozen solid. We are half in
clined to think the Herald is mistaken
in regard to wedlock and weather.
'Here, in ihi part of the State, we' have

weather to the old bachelors, who have

hang. Just think of it, four hundred
and fifty homesteaders in one county,
without a woman or a baby ! No wonder
we have premature cold weather' It's
enough to chill the blood in one's vein
to contemplate such a state of affairs
Now, friend Hathaway, because you
t.-ive passed the ' slippery paths of
youth," don't, find fault with the young
folks, and charge nil the cold weather
that wo have this winter to them, if a
few couples do happen to "pair off."
Out here we have been hoping anil pray
ing that a few couples would "go to
house-kecmng" just to moderate the
weather for the holidaj-s, when we in
tend to kill the fatted pig and have a
general rejoicing.
It is currently reported in this part of
the State that the Omaha Herald is to

The news from the extreme south
western coun i 's of the State, is sad ia
decd. Several parties of buffalo huntcis
who left the icttlemtntseluring the warm
weather in October, were out in the
storm, and being totally unprepared for
such severe weather, many of theui
have perished. We have not been abis
to learn the exact number or the names
of any, positively. T!i3 number will
not probably exceed nineteen (19).
There has been a fearful amount of suf
fering among the hunters, and very re
cent settlers in the Republican valley,
the past month. Yet another such an
occurrence may never be known in the
history of our State.
Notwithstanding the cold weather,
emigrants continue to arrive in these
"diggings." It beats the "Dutch" how
the country is settling up. It is a query
in our mind where all the people come
from there appears to be so many this
year. We are fully convinced that they
come from some place, as they all ap
pear Jb be rt, intelligent, well-to do
people just tho kinl we like to see
here on the frontier. We are receiving
letters fioin parties in Pennsylvania in
quiring in regard to Nebraska. We
send them a copy of the Herald and
urge them to hurry up, if they wish to
get a farm this side of sun set. At IIes
peria we have a new commodious hotel,
three well filled stores, which are doing
a good paying bumess, a 11 icksinith
shop, Jl. & 31. depot bnilJings, "and
you know how it is yourself," "aim it," j
four dwellings in tlis town proper, and
nbout forty more in sight a well regu
lated po.'t-offico, soon to bo called Fair

fact, we have a!' the modern improve
ments in Fillmore county except schools
and burying grounds. No one seems to
be public spirited enough to ctart either
of the above iusiitutionfi. Several abor-
tive efforts have been made for a school, i
