A Mrs. Sanderson, of Omaha, wa3 hooked by a cow a fow days since, while uudoavoriug to drive Iter. The injury is quite severe. We learn from the Bee. The man who had his leg crushed by a railroad car, and had it amputated in consequence, is getting along finely. He is out on crutches. Sampson, the railroad man, is in the city. He i not the man that committed murder with the celebrated jaw bone no, he is not the man. The weekly Herald has the largest circulation of any paper in the State. Just remember that, now. Notwithstanding the apparently dull times, the general remark among busi ness men is that business in on the in crease. Oa Tuesday the Atchison and Ne- j braska Railroad commences regular trains to Table Rock, Pawnee county. This town is a little north of the center of the county, 67 miles southeast of Lincoln and 24 miles south of Teeumseb, the county seat of Johnson county. Professor Adolphe d'Allemand, assist ed by Professor L. V. Pete, will rc-open his evening school Monday next. The party cf hunters who went out yesterday were very successful, bringing home a full supply of geese. It is expected that cars will run into Beatrice, from Crete, inside of two :eks. Capt. E. 13. Murphy leaves for Arapa hoe City to-morrow morning. The Capt. will remain at Arapahoe during the win ter, and will erect several houses before returning. Leonard is said to have made a re cent discovery in art or nature, whereby a picture of one's self can be made without a negative. A. party of Texau drovers were ar rested in Jefferson county last week for carelessly setting the piairie on fire. Since the raid of the 17. S. Commis sioners on the geese iu this vicinity, the feathered tribe have nearly all migrated to safer regions. A little child of Mr. A. G. Barnes pulled a teakettle full of boiling water onto it yesterday, and is not expected to live. The Oyster Supper by the Good Tem plars has" been postponed until Friday evening, Nov. 10th. A Commandcry has recently been es tablished at Lincoln, called Mt. Moriah Coaimandcry, No. 4, with James M. Uurty as E. C. It is about the right season of the year for young folks to begin to think about dancing schools and winter parties. We understand that several whist parlies are being organized in our city, with a view to pleasant evenings during the winter. The Lincoln Statesman proclaims A. Whitney Lee as a censumate newspaper dead beat, Good oak wood sells on the streets of our city at $0 to $0.50 per cor J Hank Streight has lots of good read ing for a long winter evening. Wc understand that a Lodgo of Ma sons is soon to be instituted at Factory- ville, in this County The bridge on Main Street needs an additional touch, perhaps, in the way of planking on the inside of the piles, to prevent drift from lodging. Has any of our democratic exchanges in this region of country heard of the Tammany frauds? They are as silent as the grave on this subject. Prairie chickens are Eold in our mar kets at from thirty-five to fifty cents each. Produce of all kinds is coming in live ly, even at the present low prices. We have received the first number of a neat little publication which comes from the Nebraska State Univert.il y, called the Hesperian Student. It is de voted to the interests of the University and education in general, is edited by W. S. Sweet, assisted by Steptoe Kin ney and Miss Kelly. It contains several well written articles, a fine poem from the pen of Rev. Dake, besides some University jokes, The apple salc3 in our town have been enormous this fall, and many have not yet laid in a supply for the winter. Bucks have told nearly five hundred barrels, and yet have on hand a good supply which they are selling at prices which bring them within the reach of every family in the city A New York dispatch says a letter from Salt Lake states that Brigham Young has instructed delegate Hooper to ask for the admission of Utah as a State on the abolition of Polygamy, the suits now pending against the Mormons for polygamy to be withdrawn. This was, probably, before Brigham started south, The total number of settlers in Ne braska, under the homestead act, last j-ear, was ten thousand, and about twen ty thousand this year, making, it is said the total number of persons who have taken advantage of the act since 1862, about one hundred thousand. By this it can be seen that Nebraska, with a po pulation of about one hundred and forty thousand, has seventy thousand more land owners than Great Britain and Ire land have, with a population of thirty three millions, the land owners of the latter countries being thirty thousand. Rev. Mr. Cameron, of Prince Edwards Island, is in the city for a few days, the guest of his brother, Rev. D. W. C, Oct.24,'71. j His Excellency, W. H. James, acting Governor, Lincoln, Nebraska: Sir: I have the honor to acknowl edge the receipt of your letter of the l'Jth inst., asking for Patents for certain lands certified to the State of Nebraska, under the approval of the Secretary of the Iuterior, and reply that the laws making the grants do not provide for the issuing of Patents, but the act of the 3d of August, 1S54, LTnited State Statutes; Vol. 10, Page 340, provides that each certified list ?hall be regarded as convey ing the fee simple of all the lands em braced in such lists, that are of the char acter contemplated by such act of Con gress, and intended to be granted there by, &c. I am sir, Very respectfully, Willis Drcmmond, Commissioner. Tbe Chronicle says arrangements have been perfected whereby Iowa coal can bo had in that city at $7,50 per ton. It has not been higher than $7,30 in this city for the past four months, and it has sold as low as $ 6.W. A desperate fight occurred recently at Gibson Station on the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroad, between the citizens and a gang of blacklegs f ho were on a spree. The leader of the blacklegs, called "Limber Jack" was shot with fourteen turkey shot in the face, and another one surrendered. . Several citi zens were wounded, oue or two danger ously. Two of the ruffians are in the hands of the authorities, and the others fled the country. Fitxgerald "our Fitz." has about closed up his railroad work for this win ter, and now we may look out for some driving business from him in our city a palatial residence, a brick block, or something else of an important character. Married, at the residence of the bride's father, Wednesday evening, Nov. 1st, by Rev. Henry Shaw, Mr. V. V. Leonard and Miss Rosa White. Leonard would probably dispute with the man who said that "a rose would be as sweet by any other name." The happy couple left this morning for a short sojourn with friends in the country. The Government Commissioners for the examination of the B. & M. R. R. in Nebraska, have received orders by telegraph to examine another twenty miles of the road, and they will proceed with the examination on Saturday, leav ing our city on a special train lor that purpose cn Friday afternoon, and stay ing over night at Crete. They will be the gue3ts of Col. Doan, while at Crete. The Lincoln correspondent of the Omaha Herald says : Attorney General Roberts is entitled to credit for his ef forts in behalf of the State in the Salt Land case. We are glad to hear from other sources than this correspondent that Attorney Gen. Roberts did all he could for the State in this case. Wc have heretofore criticised the acts of Gen Roberts somewhat sharply in regard to this matter. Wc did so for the interests of the State, and not from any ill will towards the Gen. No one is more pleased than ourself that he is now doing his whole duty in the matter, and to one will be more ready to do him complete justice. Look out for fires. We have talked long and loud about fire engines, hook and ladder and bucket companies, but now we are done with all that. We now call on the city authorities to secure a sufficient amount of powder to enable them to follow the lead of Chicago - and blow up a sufficient number of buildings to save the city, should a fire break ou.t A little boy named Willie Clump was run over in Omaha a few dpys since while endeavoring to cross the street in front of a horse driven by a lady. One of the buggy wheels passed over his breast, but lbrtuuattly he was not seri ously injured. We glean from the Bee- Prairie fires were burning brightly last night in the direction of Council Bluffs. There has beeu much damage by prairie fires thi3 fall, and much more may be done yet unhss much care is used to protect buildings, timber, stock, etc. The Nebraska Baptist Convention and Association closed jts labors recently at Lincoln. The reports show that the Baptist churches in Nebraska have nearly doubled during the past year. Th Lincoln Statesman and the Ne braska City JVeMr are the only two pa pers in the State, so far, that are avowed supporters of Geo. Francis Train for the next President. Now if Train could only secure the influence ef Buell's two papers he would hare a sure thing on Nebraska. M. B. Murphy, Esq. has secured a very desirable location on ' Chicago' Avenue, and will erect a nice dwelling thereon in a abort time. J ust received, a nice lot of Cassimer and Beaver suits, also Beaver overcoats. Great bargains as they are going off at reduced prices for cash. Call at Stad elmann's. no2dwl A Thiledelphia dispatch of the 2d. says Goldsmith Maid beat Lucy three straight heats in 2:22; 2:18? and 2:18. The general remark is, "what beauti ful weather do they have such fine weather in any other part of the world?" Capt Marshall has ordered a lot of new lock boxes, and as soon as they arc ready he will rearrange the Post Office., making a row of lock boxesoncach side, with the general delivery in front, Streight has erected a lamp in front of the Central Book Store, so that there may be light without as well as the source of (literary) light within.
