The State Medical Society paid a just tribute to the ability of Dr. Livingston as a man of science by electing him Pres ident of the Association. There is pro bably no man in the State who can fill the position with greater credit to him self and the Society than can the Dr. Ladies ! have you ever tried the "New, Favorite rC. S. I.' We are pleased to know that we have a thread, manufactured at home, superior to any forcigu threads, and can be bought for the same money ; and we believe that the ladies of our industrious town aud vicinity will ive the C. S. I. a trial, and find the truthfulness of its superiority. But, remember, this thread, however good it may be, will work no m racles; so that in trying this new favorite be pure that the eye of your nocdle is lare enough for the thread to run trough smooth and not break. Ladies, try it every spool war ranted to give satisfaction or money re funded. jeSdiwl A small animal, of the canine specie, "kicked the bucket" at the M. E. festival last night. In speaking of the recent Legislature the Chronicle says: "The last Legisla ture has been induced to take some hasty steps in legislation, the results of which, we fear, will be to the injury cf the State. Many things, which should have been done, are left to some future legislature, and the public interests will suffer, we fear, greatly thereby. Future investigations might have been avoided, had proper legislation been had at this time." We cannot fully agree with the Chronicle in its strictures on the last legislature. A large number of the citizens of Louisvil'e precinct were in the city yes" terday for the purpose of getting a fair adjustment of their taxes, but they were too late to accomplish their desires, the taxes having been delinquent. It ap pears that by soma kind of agreement between the differebt as-essors of the county the people of Louisville and some other precincts are taxed out of all proportion, and they sought a fair equal ization. It appears to us that a county assessor would be the best equalizer. The Gillespie Impeachment trial was yesterday adjourned until the first of January, 1872, only five members of the Senate and eleven members of the House being present. They were unable to pass any concurrent resolution of ad journment, not having a quorum, conse quently the members who were there simply picked up their traps and left for home, seeuiinir to tii'tik the great ojbect of the prolonged session had been ac complished when they convicted Butler and left the interests of the State in the hands of his successor. The Dakota City JIt!l comes to us greatly enlarged but we do not agree that it is improved. The one side printed in Chicago or some o'her foreign point is made up of matter which is of little in terest to the readers of local papers. Home papers and home industry should be sustained. Our worthy P. 31. informs us that daily mail service will be commenced on the 1st of July between this city and Troy, Kansas, via Nebraska City, Brownville, etc. This is a much needed change in our mail arrangements, for which we presume our people are indebt ed to Senator Hitchcock. WIMEIl WHEAT, Experience of a. t ats County Farmer. Mr. Wm. Altaffer, one of the trost extensi.se farmers of the South Weeping Water informs us that he has in one hundred and forty acres of Winter Wheat, which he thinks will average forty bushelto the acte. Mr. Altaffer has raised winter wheat on his farm on Weeping Water successfully for the past six years,, and has .never had a failure,, and not even a short crop except when injufed by grasshoppers. He gives us the following comparative statement which demonstrates the advantage of raising winter wheat instead of Spring Wheat : In 1SG9 his winter wheat averaged 37 J bushels to the acre, while his spring wheat, with the same chance and in the same field only yielded eleven bushels to the acre. In 1870 his spring wheat only averaged five bushels to thee acre, while the winter wheat averaged twenty-one bushels. He is a firm believer in Win ter Wheat, and propose putting in 240 acres this season, commencing in August. He says his experience during the past six years has thoroughly convinced bim that winter wheat can be as successfully cultivated in Nebraska as in any part of the world. There are about a thousand acres ef winter wheat in the immediate neighborhood of Mr. AI'afF.ir's fcrm, all lookipsr remarkably veil. itCBl'lLUISU OK Tilt. AM LIM. The festival last evening at Fitgerald's Hall, under the supervision of the la dies of the Catholic Church, was a com plete success both socially and financialh. The attendance was large, the receipts abundant, the strawberries and icecream were luscious, the music (by the John son Bros.') was excellent, the dancing pleasant, and the ladies in attendance were all pretty as pinks. What more could be asked to make the occasion just what it was designed to be. asdv M'i:aki:i ii. -Andy Johnson says of the Xew De parture : "Our policy is to keep quiet on the Constitutional Amendments, and watch our opportune to amend them in the future. I am notroing to say, and no other Democrat should say, that he accepts the reconstuction measures and amendments as finalities, and that no at tempt will be made in the future to get rid of them in a lawful and peaceful mar.ner. We should cot commit our selves to any such absurd doctriue, and for us to say that we will forever close our lips against these iniquities is d d nonsense." (aril. The Ladies of the Catholic Church wish to tender their sincere thanks to the citizens of Plattsmouth for their kind patronage on last night. They are happy to inform all their kind friends that the Festival was a per fect success, both iu a social and financi al way. To all who took an active part in help ing us, we are truly grateful. To John Fitzgerald, Esq., we owe our especial gratitude for the free use of his splendid Hall. To Prof. Johnson we return our thanks for his grand music ; and last, though not least, we thank the Herald for the kindness always extended to us. And we hope at no distant day to meet al our kind friends again and renew the pleasent remembrance of last evening. THE Si. E. lESTIVAt. The festival at the M. E. Church last night, under the management of the ladiss of that denomination, was a very pleasant affair, and well attended. At an early hour the church was filled with ladies and gentlemen, and soon after everything began to move on at a lively rate. Ice cream and strawberries were served in abundance. The church was amply fitted for promenading, and many cf the assembly passed a portion of their time in that way. Vocal and in strumental music was furnished. A stand, near the pulpit, was crowned with beautiful bouquets of flowers, which were disposed of very rapidly. We were unable to learn the amount of the receipts, but would judge them to be vtry fair. PEAT REDS. We have received a specimen of peat from the beds near Seward, which seems to be a very good article. Thj specimen is taken from a bed two and a half miles from Seward, which is eight feet in thickness, under a soil of about three inches, and extends over about eight acres. There is another bed of twenty acres within three miles of Seward which has been pronounced an excellent article ol peat. The specimen in our possession was taken from the farm of Mr. Anderson. Should these beds prove as good an article as they are now be lieved to be they will be of vast benefit to that portion of the State. It is hoped those interested in the lands where these beds are, will take steps to ascertain the real value of them for uel, and report to the public through the columns of the Herald. FROM SEWAKD. Eoys Mill Destroyed-Loss about Seward, Neb-, June 5th, 1S71. Ed. Herald: On Saturday night about ten o'clock we were awakened with the intelligence that Mr. Boye's Mill was Milking into the river. The citizens hastened to the spot and worked hard to save the wheat and oth er grain that was in the mill. The loss will amount to about $1,000. The mill was built on a bed of soap stone, and as is now discovered, the soap stone rested on a led of quicksand about twelve or eighteen inches thick. The water from the dam washed out the quicksand and underminded the mill, which sank down, and the dam bursted and swept away the lower part of the mill. The floors which were filled with grain gave way and precipitated the grain into the water. There was about 300 bushels of wheat en bins, which is a total loss ; besides about one hundred sacks full, which were wet and badly damaged The frame of the mill now stands in a very precari ous condition, as the least wind will up--etit.
