John R. Clark, Esq., of the Banking

A gentleman informed us that he
counted over two hundred teams at one
time to-day, mostlv loaded with grain.
Guthman & Fluberty can put up the

Our friend Shannon keeps nothing but
the best of livery stock, and if you don't
happen to have the money to pay for a
ride, just give an order on some good
natured landlord.
Samuel P. Davis has become connected
with the Brownville Democrat, and ta
ken charge of the local department.
Mr. Austin has arranged for a school
pic-nic to take place on the Iowa
side of the river next Friday. A large
number of ladies and gentlemen, resi
dents of the city, are expected to join
in the pleasures of the occasion.
We learn from an Ashland gentleman
that Dr. Huff, of that city, recently
caught a young wolf, and that an inef
fectual attempt was made by himself and
a gentleman named Lininger to capture
the old one. Mr. Linioger is said to be
very fond of sports, and especially of
wolf huuting.
Iy reference "to the time table of the
O. & S- W. 11. It. it will be seem that
passengers can leave here in the morning,
arrive at Omaha at 11:10, leave Omaha
at 3 p. m. and arrive at home the same
evening'.
It ha3 been suggested in our hearing
thai the merchants of Ashland should
keep a better stock of flannels than they
do, it might save an occasional trip to
Piattsmouth.
During the recent impeachment trial
the Tichenor House was tho principle
headquarters (as it always is) and every
corner of that magnificent building was
occupied. Our friend Ensey was always
on hand to wait upon guests, and not a
man was allowed to leave the hotel dis
satisfied with his fare or treatment. En
i-ey is a complete success as a landlord.
Mr. Green, principal draughtsman in
the Surveyor General's Office has arriv
ed and assumed the duties of the office.
He is said to be one of the finest work
men in the United States.
Hon. T, M. Marquett arrived from
Lincoln this morning, where he has
been conducting the defense of Gov.
Butler's impeachment trial. Mr. Mar-
quett's management of this case, espe
cially his forcible presentation of the
law points, has given him a reputation
as wide as the knowledge of the case ex
tends. This trial has been the most im
portant one ever known in the State,
hence the selection, by the Governor, of
tho most eminent counsel in the State.
Col. Baum informs us that the bridge
work on the B. !c M. is completed to
Crete, and the track will probably be
finished next week.
Mr. Henry llobinson and J. E. Hol
land proprietor of the City Hotel of
this city, arrived from Crete last evening.
Corn and wheat crops never looke
better in Nebraska and western Iowa
than at the present time. The splendid
prospect for a bountiful harvest is caus
ing the farmers to let up a little and dis
pose of their surplus of last year. The
influence is felt in all channels of busi
ness, and money seems much more plen
tiful than for the past six months.
As is usual in such cases, we expect
to hear an hundred small fry polititians
throughout the State connected with
the newspapers of the the State, and in
other capacities, come out with much
pomp and circumstance, and in loud
tones proclaim their great services, ren
dered in in impeaching Gov. Butler.
Most of the men who will thus insult
the public will be of a class who dared
not have an opinion of their own until
Butler was convicted. Such is politics
of one kind.
A man who had been disappointed in
love committed suicide at Brownville
last Saturday by taking a dose of strich-
nine. He was a native of Germany,
named John Bolen.
Mr. C. S. Williams, formerly of this
city, and at present telegraph manager
at Nebraska City, is in town on a visit to
his friends.
Leonard & Co. advertise Photographs
at $3 per dozen during the present
month, and other pictures at the same
low rate. This establishment turns out
nothing but the very best of work.
The Glenwood Opinion says: "One
day this week while two boys, sons of
Dr. Dohelan, were 'playing canon,' they
accidentally left the powder horn a little
too close to the flash ami theresu'twasthe
tire caupht in the horn and exploded the
horn, the boys'and all around there
Fortunately the boys were not seriously
burned, although their eyebrows, hair
and laces were a little scorched This
little flash will be more effective than a
hundred parental warnings against play
ing with powder."
Ten men were crossing the river at
Omaha Wednesday evening in a skiff
when the boat was capsized and they
were all left to "t-hirk for themselves,"
assistance being convenient, they were
all rescued.
Bennett Bro's. keep on hand, during

Burlington, in a day or two.
Hcsser is on hand with green peas,
fully matured, and in any quantities de
sired. You can get them from his wag

In speaking of the non-appearance
in our Lincoln specials of the election of
Senator Sheldon as President f the
Senate, we did not design to be under
stood to say that the "neglect" was on
the part of the operators, but was a
neglect of our own in not incorporating
that item in the telegram.

SCHOOL IMC-XIC.
A few days since the school of Mr. J.
R. Dilley concluded to have a pic-nic
somewhere soon, but did not determine
then when er where they would have it ;
but subsequently they determined to
have it at Shaffer's grove, m the north
west part of the city to-day. At pre
cisely nine o'clock this morning the
teachers and pupils, together with a
large number of citizens from different
parts of the city, took up "line of
march" from the school house for the
grove. About noon we filched a moment
from our labor and paid them a viit,
and upon arriving on the ground we
found the happy crowd assembled around
a "groaning" table (groaning beneath
the load of the many "giod things
to eat)." After dinner the party spent
the time in swinging and other pastimes.
The occasion, all around, was a pleasant,
as well as a profitable one. To see the
brave and the fair on tha "flying trapeze"
made us wish we could swing. Mr.
Dilley, and his efficient assistant, Miss
Girtie Borders, deserve much credit for
their untiring efforts in getting up this
pic-nic for the enjoyment of their pupils,
and others ; and we are glad to note the
fact that the enterprise was a complete
success. Time forbids us making such
a report of it as we should like, for
which we are very sorry; besides that,
we have a delicious cake before us from
the "pic-nicers," which looks so tempt
ing that we cannot write further with
out partaking of it. Here goes for the
cake.
a Tnniu ix iioRsirriiiEF.
The Brownville Democrat of yester
day says: "Last Monday a boyish-looking
chap about seventeen years old, rode
into town mounted ou a fine iron grey
horse, without a saddle, which lie offered
to sell at a tempting figure provided
the title had been good. But fifty dol
lars was too much, under the suspicious
circumstances, and Marshall Cambel
concluded to take him up fur examina
tion. He was brought before Judge
Rogers, and confessed that he had stolen
the animal near Seneca, Kansas. He
gave his name as James Biniman, and
said he lived near Lathrop, Missouri.
Being out of work and out of money at
Seneca, he wanted to go home, so he
stole the horse to ride as far as the river,
and then ho would sell it to get money
enough to pay his expenses dome.
"He was committed to jail to await in
telligence from Kansas, and on Wednes
day afternoon Jude Rogers received a
telegram, stating that such a horse had
been stolen, and requesting that the
thief be held till further communication
could be had."
We had the pleasure of seeing a letter,
receiyed to-day, by one of our citizens,
from Mr. Selden Irwin, in which he
says he purposes to visit Piattsmouth
soon with his Theatrical Troupe. Mr.
Irwin is the prince of managers in the
west, and has with him several etar ac
tors. At the time of his writing he
could not name the time, but wiil give
several days notice.
A slight "unpleasantness" occurred at
the City Hotel, yesterday eveuing, be
tween a colored man by the name of
Jehu Page who is employed at the Ho
tel, and a cook by the name of Phil p
B'.essiugton, an old offender in which the
latter got pretty badly demoralized. It
seems that Blessington had been making
threats, and Page had armed himself
with a small pistol for se'f-defence ; and
in the melee drew the pistol and struck
his antagonist several blow3 on the hfad
with it. Constable Murphy was soon on
hand and stopped tho row by arresting
the parties. Page was taken before
Justice O'Neill this morning and after
a full hearing, set at liberty, as it was
proved he only acted in self-defense.
Blessington was unable to be taken be
fore the court, and will probably be civil
for a few days at least.
A Californian has offered premiums to
