"Special" Correspondence of the Herald.
Yesterday evening, at about half-past

hand-car excursion up the road of the
1. A M. The night was beautiful and
calm, the moon shone down on terra
JlniKi iu gorgeous f-plendor, and the "ail
aboard" being pronounced l3' the "con
ductor," wo were soon rapidly gliding
over the smooth track for our destina
tion. Stopped a brief rpace of time at
the depot, then onward again we flew
over the track, leaving the classic city of
Plattsmouth, with her buxom lads and
smiling lasses, to the rear only to be
seen by visions of reniembrauce. The
craggy hills on our left through whoso
crevices and caves danced many a bab
bling brook frowned down on us, lofty
tres bowed, and "dug-outs" seemed
more cheerful as we passed by; while to
our right slept the famous and placid
waters of the Missouri and Platte.
These were scenes made more beautiful
and itnprcsMve by the rays of a full palrf
moon, and the songs of the whippoor
wi!!, with an occasional croak of a bull
frog and the sound of the fisherman's
line as it ingie.-sed and egressed the
waters of the aforesaid streams, which
will fade fiom our mind only wheu
memory fades. We soon pas.-t-d through
Oreapoiis. A little ways beyond this
city we slopped to rest, etc., etc. Then
onward aain we giiiv:i, out over a more
level und cheerful looking country a
beautiful, level praiiie. The country
wore a sameness, pretty much, until
about six or seven miles from Platts
mouth, when all of a sudden we found
ourselves into the Platte river ( he load
is built in the river some distance here).
Here we noticed a great deal of inginuity

Every man did his own whistling

It was fun for the "natives," who came
rushing to their doors and windows to
hear us "holler" and see us glide'by
One of the party said he saw sixteen
children standing at one window not
counting the dogs and cats. I did not
see them, and therefore do not believe it
was true, We arrived at Omaha Junc
tion in due time, and were happily
received by Mr. Frank Whittemore,
Telegraph operator at that place, and
"mine host," Mr. Keating. After a
few hours spent in social conversation
and other pastime (I don't mean gamb
ling and drinking, for we did none of
this) cracking jokes, partaking of crack
ers and cheese, and indulging in a few
fine Cubas, we bid adieu to fair Omaha'
Junction anil friends, and returned.
There were no accidents, excepting that
Maj F sher came near falling into a cul
vert, by a misstep onto the car. Omaha
Junction is a city of whilom size, about
nine miles out from Piattsmouth, and is
destined to beapla.-eof no mean import
ance before many centuries pass by. It is
where the O. & S. W. connects with the
R. & M. My article is long, and I will
close with a couplet from witty Saxe,
which expresses my sentiments to a
