Straws are constantly lcinp whirled in
night hy tlio impeachment wiivl which
phow where the thing comes from, at
least whenj one of the strong currents
come from. The Line-tin Journal has a
good sized straw which s:iys tl.nt on the
luornim? on which the vote was to have
hcen taken, a member cf the legislature
from Omaha, was overheard to chuckle
to another that he "guessed lota in
Lincoln would not le quite so high in
a month from thaf date ;" and the same
paper charges that Lstabrook said to
Myres that "we can't convict Butkr
bnt we meat kill the d d town," These
straws show what some men's ideas of
justice are.
COHTITtT103IAl.C?IVEXTIOX.
There is a strong effort beins made to
drag the impeachment matter into the
Constitutional Convention. This U all
wrong, and no man who cares a fig for
the welfare of the State will attempt
any such foolish thing. Whatever dif
ferent parties may think of the guilt or
innocence of Governor Uutler and
there ii a diversity of opinion cn this
question they should bo wiring to al
low it to be settled on the evidence, and
not attempt to drag it into the Co:isti
tutional Convention. We believe there
is "more noi.-e than wool" about this
matter, however; for we have yet to
find a single man, either friend or 1'oc of
Butler's who favors dragging this mat
ter into the convention. A vast amount
of capital is sought to be mado on asser
tions relative to this matter, but there
seems to be but littla cause for fearing
this great bug buar. Our O'raha neigh
bors are fearfully exorcise! about it (as
they are about anything in connection
with the "dead" Gov.), and we find the
lcinocracy in every locality in mortal fear
of this dire calamity and why? They
fear (?) it because they think they see
an opportunity for dividing the Republi
can party an J allowing a few of thi po
litical stripe to step into ofiice. IhsxiMy
the Republicans of Nebraska can be
wheedled into a quarrel among them
selves on this subject, and thus put
the Democracy in power ; but we think
their experience during tha past year on
'"mixed" arrangements has had a tolera
bly healthy influence on them, "But
none but Rf.pchi.icans on guard." Let
n man dare to drag any question into
the Constitutional Convention except
such as belong there, and let no man
dare to drag in accusations before the
people that are calculated to distrac t tho
Republican party. We hope our Omaha
fiiends will discover that they are fright
ened at a shadow, and will put a stop to
their useless harangue about packing a
convention in opposition to Gov. Butler.
c:x. livixgktox itEMovra.
The Omaha papers of this morniag
contain the following telegram :
Washington, April 12. Tho f .IIott
ing nominalions were sent to the Senate:
J. 0- Dickinson, United States Marshal,
Arizona Territory : H. C. Cunningham,
Surveyor Genera! for the District of .Ne
braska and Iowa.
This comes i.i the regular Associated
Brea reports, and we see no rcaou to
doubt its correctness The policy of re
moving such a man as Gm. Livingston
from olEce f Lr no other reason than be
cause he sees proper to exercise the
privilege of an American citizen in sup
porting the man of his choice for office,
is one which is calculated to make men
greater knaves in politics. The Sur
veyor Generals office, under Gen. Liv
ingston's administration, has assumed
rank as the best conducted office in the
nation. There is no charge of either in
competence or fraudulent practices in
fact the head of the Department passed
the personal compliment on Gen Liv
ingston of saying that his was the best
conducted Surveyor General's office in
tho United States. In view of this fact,
wo say the general plan of removing
men from oihVo Lea use they ex
pressed an honest choice between
different aspirants for office is calculated
to make political knaves of men who
would prefer to bo honest anJ why
Simply because a premium i offered for j
men to go for the man tnat 1 likely to j
ain. whether lie is the honest choice t f
a man or not. So far as Mr. Cunning
ham is concerned, we believe he, lIso,
will make an excellent officer; but he
can make no better than Oen. Living
ston has. The enemies of Gen Living
ston may grin anl gloat over his re
moval, but wo defy one of them to point
to .a sir.glo official act of his during his
term that has not bcin in strict accord
ance with the requirements of justice
and manhood. Gen. Livingston wilj
learo the office with the consclou ness of
hating done his whole duty as a man
and an officer, and that he is removed
for the reason that lie dared to maintain
his manhood during the recent Senatorial
contest. We do not speak in this man
ner with the purpose of censuring those
who may have been instrumental in se
curing his removal, but with tho sole
viow.of cutering our protest agaiut the
general plan of removing men from office
because they have acted their honest
sentiments in the choke of applicants
for high position. It is ruinous to the
principles of true government, and the
sooner it checked the letter. Tt is said
that ,: to tha victors belong the spoils,"
and to some extent we admit the truth
of that saying ; but we bclievo it should
enly bo applied to a victory in come
principle of government, and not simply
to a personal victory within a party.
Rut we have said more than we intend
ed on this subject we ouly desire to give
the item of news, and allow each one to
form his own opiuiou of whether it is
good or bad.
It is said that Mr. Greeley is no ad
dicted to agriculture that whenever he is
nked a question ho invariably .sajs
'"hay." before ho answers to any rcat
extent.
