Dr. Kcnaston, of Unionvi'le, was in
the city yesterday, and infortcs us that
the farmers of that vicinity are well
through with their seeding. They are
ahead of the farmers in this jart of the
county.

down on the evening train. The Legis
lature has adjourned until May 30th.
There is a move in progress for open
ing an esten-ive wholesale house in our
city; oue that will compete with anything
west of Chicago. We will give names
and particulars in a few days.
See card of the Tichenor House in to
day's paper. This valuable property has
heen leased for a term of years by
Messrs. Lounsbury and Ensey, who
"know how to keep hotel' if anybody
in the west does. Mr. Lnsey has per
sonal supervision of the establishment,
and he is certainly one of the most ac
commodating landlords in the State.
Our fellow townsman Thatcher, of the
firm of Mulholland & Thatcher, grain
dealers, has erected a very convenient
grain hou.o at the south side of the B.
& M. Machine Shops. It consists of a
large building containing five different
compartments for various kinds and
grades of grain, built in the side hill so
as to unload from the wagon on the up
per side and open a shoot into the car at
the lower side. It will hold about fcix
thousand bushels, and is supplied with a
large fan mill through which the grain
passes on the way into the car, cleaning
it thoroughly. Mr. Thatcher has sent
for a large hopper scale, in which to
weigh all the grain before being deposit
ed in the car.
Messrs. Hayward & Constance, of
Chicago, have opened a large hardware
store at Weeping Water Falls. These
gentlemen have chosen wisely in locating
at the thriving town of Weeping Water,
as we look upon that as one of the most
prosperous inland villages of Nebraska.
It is hunounded by a splendid agricul
tural country, has oue of the finest wa
ter powers in the State, and is supplied
with the best rock quarries in the west.
We welcome Messrs. Hayward & Con
ttanoe to Cass count3, and trust they
may never have occasion to regret their
action in locating among us.
By reference to our advertising col
umns it will be seen that Mr. Geo. S.
Smith has taken a partner into his law
business. Mr. Geo. E. Draper, the new
member of the firm, is a j'oung man who
has just come to our city to make a per
manent home, and he comes with a full
determination to carve out for himself an
honorable name, and if we are not mis
taken in his physiognomy he is one who
'"dares to do," and will be found an ac
tive man in our citj-. We welcome him
to the ranks of those upon whom the
future of our city depends, and doubt
not the new firm of Smith & Draper will
meet with the success they merit.

It will be remembered by the readers
of the Hekald that we made mention,
a short time since, of the fact that Mr.
Leasley f this city, had been requested
to forward a specimen of rock from our
quarries to parties in St. Louis who
wished to open a large business. We
are now able to inform the Hehald'
readers that the rock was duly forwarded,
and that it is in every way satisfactory.
We take the liberty of making the fol
lowing extract from a private letter re
ceived by us this morning from the gen
tleman who has this matter in charge :
"Your information to the public in re
gard to Mr Leasley's receiving a letter
from a gentleman in St. Louis asking for
a sample 01 the stone in your neighbor

In the above we discern the dawn of a
new and lucrative branch of business for
this locality, and one which will yet
bring vast revenues to this portion of
the State. W e believe no portion of
the west is so well supplied with stone
as Cass county, and especially that part
of the county bordering on the Platte
river, through which the B. fc M. runs.

sides these inexhaustible quarries of
rock, we have an unlimited supply of

far distant when our city will contain
largo manufacturing establishments

formed into both fine and coarse wares.

I have this day read Mitchell's testimony,
which is true in some particulars, hue
abounds in misrepresentations.
- Lat April I was at work on the Asy
lum (I am a uia.-on) and the Governor
came on the scaffold where I was en
gaged and I asked him to loan me $40,
for a short time and he did accommodate
me with the sum. He put a check into
a letter and dropped it int the P. O.
where I could gt't it on Saturday night,
when I came to the city.
I went to 3IitcheU's and he accompanied
me to the office, not to "introduce me to
Captain Baird," fur I was already ac
quainted with him and had been for
Twme time.
ihe letter could not be
found and I went back to Mitchell's Ho
tel to supper, afterward started ud town
again and met Captain Baird close to
the hotel, with the letter, and he satis
factory explained how it happened that
he did not find it at first. We all three
then went to the postoffice, and I pro
cured a money order for the full amount
of the check and mailed to Iowa. I
have no objection to tell why I borrowed
$40, for I told the Governor at the tint 1.
It was to enable a widow and hei daugh
ter to come to Nebraska and take a
homestead. A widow who had sent a
platoon of sons to the army. Mitchell
falsifies when he eays that he does not
know the amount of the check, for I
told him then, and told him what I bor
rowed it for, and told the truth, so help
me God !
If the Governor's good deeds are to be
thus distorted into crime, all I have to
say is, God help him ! The other char
ges are wholly false, about the 4 six cor
ner lots, and the $1,000 stone contract"
The $40 check is the enly check I have
ever received since I have lived in Ne
braska. If that is "bribery" make the
most of it.
I have always considered Governor
Butler the best of hi party, and if he is
impeached where will Grant and the rest
of the radicals appear?

will find the amount, and he will certain

began to be whispered about in Art and
musical circles, which was not unknown
to the publier but which had heretofore
been associated with another field of
usefulness and honorable achievement.

ed the rarest musical capacity, and a gift
of musical improvisation, which may be
the foreshadowing of genius. Youns as
she is, and modest to a fault, Mi's
Demorest is quite exceptional in her sifts
and possibilities. Iler compositions
which first attracted attention are
brilliant in expression and varied in
charactar. Her polkas, mazourkas, ga
lops are played by noted leaders of bands,
viz., Dod worth. Baker, Grafulia, Operti
and Downing, with whom, aud with the
public, they are great favorites. Oue of
iVr latest song?, "Birdie," written for
Mdle Nilsson. and accepted by her, is
charming, and likely to achieve perma
nent popularity.
It is not as a com poser alone, however,
that Vinna Demorest has won distinc
tion ; her interpretation of music is as
pure and true as the written expresion
of it is rare and conscientious. She has
a voice of exceeding beauty, flexibility,
aid strength ; an admirable method,
trained under the best teachers ; clear
enunciation, broad, well marked, pleas
in?, and a sympathetic .tyle, and unu
sual beauty and grace of person. Her
voice has a register possessed by very
few, even of our fir?t-class singers, and
her correct and easy execution even of
the mot difficult passages excites the
enthusiasm of artists and critics. Phre
