tice has brought out a fact concerning
him which has never heretofore been

sible authority that when Surratt's moth
er was on trial Judge-Advocate Holt
consented to release her if the former
would give himself up to trial. Surratt
was informed of this by friends who
were in communication with him, and,
instead of at once complying, thereby
securing the release of his mother, he
immediately absconded, leaving her to
her fate.
A correspondent of the New York
Tribune relates a remarkable instance of
perseverance and success under uiKisual
deprivation of natural faculties. Two
sons of a wealthy American gentleman,
both dumb, and cue deaf also, were sent
to Europe for their education, and have
succeeded wonderfully. The elder who
is wholly deaf, passed through the rigid
and extended scholastic curriculum of
Heidelberg, acquiring ease and elegance
in German and French, and a jerfect
understanding ot Greek, .Latin and lie
brew, enabling him to pass an oral exam
ination in these tongues with marked
ability, and to receive, at the age of 28,
the unusual honor of Doctor of Phi'es-
ophy, in addition to the usull degree of
Master ot Arts, lhe younger brother,
though deprived of speech and hearing,
has also achieved an equally remarkable
success. He is now engagaged in paint
ing the ruins of Alhambra, in Spain ;
the work, when finished, to be placed on
exhibition in this city.
Mark Twain gets otT the following to a

the phosphorus in it makes brains. So
far you are correct, but I cannot help
you to a decision about the amount you

(Iowa) Bulletin
records
the heroic conduct of a lady
teacher of tbt plaee, Mi5s Masgie
Cooper. The pchool building in which
h was tea 'thing is provided with ven
tillating flues, connected with the rooms
by register.--. These registers aro of cast
iron, weighing about forty pounds each,
and are let into the wall about thirteen
feet from the floor. The other afternoon,
as two lirtie boys were work at the black
board, directly ur.dr the register, in
M:s Cocrcr s room, the lady happened
to cast her eve in the direction of the
ceiling, and saw to her consternation that
the heavy iron register was on tne very
point of falling on the heads of the un
conscious children- Taking in the situ-
ata glance, she saw that the little ones
could not be removed in time to avoid
the impending danger, but, detcrmided
to pave.their lives at any saciince, Plic
rushed to the snot, and extending her
arms above the heads of the little boys,
received the whole weight of the labing
iron: and. bv the utmost exercise of her
strength, diverted it from the line of its
descent ti the floor, where it fell close by
the ude of the imperiled children.
There is not the hast doubt that, but for
the heroic action of Miss Cooper, the
ives cf one or both the boys would have
;cen sacrificed. Miss Cooper received a
severe cut in the hand, and for a day or
two her arm was so benumbed by the
concussion as to be entirely useless.
The late Professor Silliman, of Vale
College, received from a company a spec
imen of coal to examine, and the Pro
fessor said he would make a test and de
termine its quality. The next day the
owners of the grand discovery waited on
Lmi again, eager to Lear the verdict
which was to mak or mar their fortunes.
The Professor said, w'th that impressive
solemnity which always marked his man
ner: Gentlemen, I understand you to
say that this property is situated upon a
l.ill-top, consequently the situation is
prominent. It is valuable, immensely
valuable, though as a coal mine I am
obliged to obsorve it i a failure. Fence
it, gentlemen, fence it in and hold it
through good and evil fortune, till the
Last Day ; I am convinced that it will
be the best point from which to view the
sublime spectacle of final conflagration.
I feel satisfied that if any part ot the
earth shall remain uninjured after that
awful fire, it will be that coal mine of
youri.
Paris prices are rather steep. Ilere
arc a lew ot them. 11am sells at eight
francs per pound. Lyons sausage, made
of mule flesh it said, sells at sixteen
francs per pound. Horse steak may be
had for two an J a half francs for each
pound. A goose costs twentv-five francs:
a chicken fifteen, a turkey fifty-five, and
a pound of butter about fifteen francs,
or about three dollars. In fact there is
no use trying to live, and making a koi J
tie to get one's self honorably shot is the
most economical way of prolonging ex
istence. The flesh is too expensive an
establishment to be kept up by common
people.
Married men are of two kinds good
and bad. The bad are truly horrible:
the good very good indetd. The baa
married man ill-treats hi family in every
way, and generally ends by running
away and leaving his wife to earn a liv
ing by needle-work. But the good mar
ried man well, he is not madly in love
anv more, but he believes that there
never was such a woman as his wife.
He does not see time's changes on her
face ; she is always young to him.
Every baby binds them closer to each
other.
There is an expression in a good mar
ried man s lace a Lachelor s cannot have.
It is indescribable : he is a little nearer
the angels than tho prettiest young fel
low living. You can see that his broad
breast is a pillow for somebody's head,
and thnt little fingers pulled his whisk
ers. When some one has said husband,
and some other papa, a seal is set upon
his forehead. JNo one no woman, at
least, ever mistakes the good married
man for an instant. It is only the erratic
one who leaves you in doubt. The good
one can protect all the unprotected fe
males, and make himself generally agree
able to the ladies, and yet never leave a
doubt on any mind that tliers is a pre
cious little woman at home wrth all the
world to him.
A dignified drunkard dwells at Bel
lows Falls, Vt. He is an old Indian
known as "Dr. John," and would be
smart, save for his love of liquor. As he
was tacking along the sidewalk, lie made
a mis-step, plunged into an opening and
ftuck there, with nothing but his feet
visible above the brick. A person who
saw him ran to his aid and pulled hnn
out. As soon as the "doctor" was on
his feet, he braced himself up against a
hitching post and said : G lone: now
Can't ye mind v-er buisness ! What
have I done that ye should abuse me
this wav?"
ine individual cxniainjd bv savinc
that he wished to help the doctor out of
trouble; whereat John replied, fepect
you think that's mighty I -is talk ! Next
time 1 stoop down to pick up my hat
out o that hole, want you just to keep
ycr hands oft, that n all !
