It is evi-!"'it that a S.-ho.jl System is
inec ii:.!ete in which no adequate means
are proild-jd fjr the tdu. ation as well as

schools are ju.-t as necessary as law
schools, medical schools, and theological
schools. IJut as it is impossible to sus
tain normal schools enough to accommo
date ail the teachers in tlie tate. or if
pos-ible it is impracticable for many of
our teach? to atto-n l them, as the next
best thing we would say firm a Normal
Institute, tiav ng for its object instruction
as well as examination.
Pon't understand me as being opposed
to normal schools. 1 would advocate the
doctrine that we should have normal
schools enough to accommodate all our
teachers, as soon as po--ib!t'. l'ut grant
ing that wo have norma! schools enough
in some parts of our country to accom
modate :il! the teat hers in tho-e parts,
yet we find many teachers w ho do not
embrace tlie opportunity of being bene
fited by the-e Institutions. It is very
important then that we should do the
next le-t thiuvr to advance our sy.-tern of
puh'ic in-t ruction. The influence cf
well conducted normal In-titutes can
scarcely be estimated in dollars and cents.
Many teacher.?, and especially young
teachers, are aroused to new energy by
the in-trtiction thoy receive from experi
enced instructors at these Institutes.
The instructors, will notice the errors
an 1 weuknes.-es in the habits of the pu
pil teachers which need special atten

correction. In the teacher's training class
is the time and place where activities are
to be rou-ed and directed, corrected and
