above. Curiously enough, the succes
sion from the male Beuuhanrus ceased
with both branches together, and was
continued from the females Hortense
and Stephanie. And here it i also in
terestinir to note that while llorten-HJ
had none but male children, Stephanie
had none but females. That the trench
Emperor should obbject to Hieing hjs
cousin-gennan on the Spanish throne is
undoubtedly because the Prince happens
to be a German cousin also, and a Prus
sian one at that.

The masonry of the west pier is pro
rressing rapidly, and there is no further
delay for want of granite. It is now
about eight feet above the water. The
masonry of the east pier U about live
feet below the surface, and men are now
ngaccd constructing a Coffer dam of
wood preparatory to recommencing the
laying of stone the iron for the top part
of the caisson was removed some time
ago. The building 01 the caisson at
Carondelet for the east abutment pier is
also in an advanced state, lhe iron
sides bhould have been built up some
fourteen feet, and during the recent
scorching weather the heat inside the
iron inclosure has been so intense that a
fresh trans of men have to relieve at
noon those who go to work in the morn
ing. The other preparations for inaugu
ratincr the east abutment pier are al-o
nearly completed. In East St. Louis
the frame work for the machinery will be
finished in a lew days.

Himself Dies Immediately.
W e were lntortued yesterday that a
terrible accident had occurred at Gal'a
tin, Daviess county, on Sunday last, that
threw a cloud of gloom over the nhole
community at that place.
It appears that a young man named
Black, intended to go out into the woods
to hunt, lie had made all necessary
preparation, took his gun and was about
to start when it is supposed he in sonic
manner touched the tnsrger with his foot,
exploding the charge, which went in at
his mouth and passed out at the top of
Ins head, literally blowing his brains out.
Of course death immodiately ensued.
This is all we have been able to learn

Xett of Uorse Thieves Broken Up.
From the Leavenworth (Kansas) Bulletin,
Junction City, Auc. 2 12 M.
The man Tucker who has been under
arrest here lor the murder, last night,
contessod to the killing ot lvcynolds.-
A posse was immediately sent to arrest
Sanderson, the ring leader 01 the gang,
ana in an unsuceesstul attempt to cap
ture him, Jimmy Reynolds, a brother of
the murdered man, and Mr. White, As
sistant u. o. Marshal, were both shot,
though neither seriously hurt. Sander
son is still at large, ami the whole coun
try is after him. These parties have
lone been susiected as horse thieves,
and this confession by Tucker exposes all
their operations and will serve to break
up the worst gang in the State.

The Cincinnati Enquirer has a charac
teristic fling at Senator Schurz, winding
up with the inquiry, hy'didn t you
enlist ?" As Gen. Schurz served in the
field during nearly the entire war, the

shot of the home guard order, and nearly
as effective and sarcastic. The trouble
with the General is that while the En
quirer folks were piloting Kirby Smith's
aru.y toward Cincinnati, he was at work
in the trenches near Chancellorville. lie
has the further misfortune to be a Ger
man, and to sympathize with the old
Fatherland, while the Enquirer s on the

During his Italian tour, Dickens was
conducted over a certain monastery by a
vounz monk, who, thouth a native of
the country, spoke very fluent. English,
with the exception of frequently mis
placing his v's and w's. On Dickens'
inquiring if he had ever been in England,
he said that he had not, but had learned
the language from a book that he brought
forward, which proved to be a copy of
Pickwick. It thus appeared that Mr.
Samuel Weller is responsible for the pe
culiarity of his pronunciation.
