The lightning "played smash' with the telegraph poles along the line west, last Tuesday night. A large number of poles were split. The railroad company has purchased fifteen acres of land on the point of rocks below the city, whero tl.cy will quarry rock for the walling of the river front of their grounds, also for the building of bridge piers. The work of quarrying will commence in a few days. Accounts from all parts of the State justify the assertion that the crops of small grain will be more than an average. The straw u light, but the heads are good and the kernel was never better. The contract for laying the second ten miles of track on the Omaha, Plattx mouth & Gulf Railroad has been let and the work coiumencad. Vivian & Palmer are doing too much business for a small place, and have de cided upon having more "elbow room." They have rented the Ilerold corner, where they will remove their stock of pond- as soon as the room can be placed in readiness. We learn that an engineer corps is out surveying the line of the Weeping Water and Ashland Railroad. The Chief Engineer (we suppose that is the title given the man who heads the party) is a man of great experience. We heard his name, but decline giving it at present as it might cause a commotion in R. R circles. We f-hall probably give a full acennnt of the survey, the cngineerin,.' party, together with the result of their labors, in a short time. Every d;iy brings a host of new set tYrs to this portion of Nebraska Eve.y train going west takes out a num ber of anxious seekers after either gov ernment or Railroad Lnd'. We understand that the R. R. Co contemplate putting a track on the trans fer boat President, so that cars can be taken aboard of her as well as on the barge. There appears to be a general disposi tion throughout the country, among Re publicans, to turn out to the oriuiary meetings on the 23d. We have heard a large number of them, in different locali ties speak of the matter, and they Inva riably say they will be on hand regard less of what work they may have to do. from Fri1oy''tl)aitv. Auditor Gillespie went west on the 10 a. in. train to-dny. The M c(l ill came up this morning, left a lot of freight and passed on to Omaha. The President has the base of her smoke stacks ornamented with bright coiorcu paint. I lesser astonished us this morning with a lot of ripe tomatoes. lie will have an abundance of them in a short time. ! Workmen are already engaged in tear j ing away the earth and rock at Rocky Point, the proposed site for the great Union Bridge across the Missouri, one half mile below the foot of Main street. We hal the pleasure of a call this morning from Mr. James M. Archibald, special Agent of the Reaper fire Insu rance Company, of Rockford, III The Omaha ILu-nll denounces the .soldiers' re-union at Lincoln on the 4th as a meeting for political purposes. Probably the editor of the Herald failed to discover a good chance to sell sole leather pies at Lincoln. "Circum.-tances niter cases," it is said. The IL-rald never did think much of the soldiers ex cept so lar as their money went. Several of our State exchanges have f ubli.-hed an item to the effect that Hon. T. M. Marquett was lying at the point of death at his home in this city. We can assure them that Maiquctt is worth a dozen dead men, j'ct. He was very sick for a few days, but his friends throughout the State will be pleased to learn that he is out again, attending to business. If we are not' mistaken we saw a no tice in a recent number of a Nebraska City Time that Dr Rlack, Dr. Rlue and Pr. Brooke were in attendance at the meeting of the Democratic State Central Committee at Nebraska City; and we also noticed somewhere in the same pa per that Dr. Black and Dr. Brooke had called on the Times at least we think we saw these notices, a least three or four times in the same paper. Wc th'nk doctors arc the kind of men most needed in that party. It needs doctor ing bad enough. Hesscr, the friend of the printers and the fatherless, was around town with a change of diet to-day. He had cauli flowers, cucumbers and radishes. There will be religious services, con ducted by Rev. P. M. McLeod, of the Baptist Church, at the Court House, Sunday. 17th, inst. Preaching at 11 a. m. and? J p. ni. Wc understand Prof.. Miller intends leaving us in a short time for New York, and Long Island, where he will spend the "heated term" provided the said term dees not cease before he gets there. The Prof having sold, his Oreapolis property, will now offer at auction, in the course of a week, his fine team and carriage, and all his household goods, farming utensils, etc Due notice of the sale will be given through the Herald. The Henry S. Turner came up at noon to-day and left at 4 this evening. She brought np ten car loads of lumber for Lincoln, and a quantity of freight for merchants of our city. Several highly respectable and other wise, were, "pulled" lat evening, while "going it blind." The result was a trifling depletion of the pocket book, and the Police 'W them and the Record er "raisedit." .... . Clark & Plummer have purchased one set of counters and shelving from the tore now occupied by them, and aj having them put up at their new quarters. The Council Bluffs Timet says we could not refrain from giving that city a slap when speaking of the erection of a bridge at this place, a few days since. We were certainly innocent of any such intention, and do not think our words could be easily di-tor ted into such a meaning. We have the friendliest feel ings toward Council Bluffs, as she is on one of our great lines of railroad east. Prof. Miller's sale of property wil take place in this city at 10 a. m. sharp, next Saturday. Due notice of the place of sale will be given. We understand that Clark & Parmele contemplate the erection o f a large brick business house adjoining the one recently purchased by them of Billin & Son, and that they will arrange for a public hall on the second floor. In the mean time we hope they will leave the second story of the Billin house for the purpose of a hall. We have no hall in the city except the Court room, and that is entirely too small for the present popu lation of the city. A hall would pay better than anyting we know f in the way of a building, and we hope Messrs. Clark & Parmele will proceed at once with the erection of the building. , A hanging plant at a window is a sign of a gentleness and grace inside. No bad people hang plants m their windows Beaut" never assimilates with badness. No evil .-pirit can go through a window where there is a flower. They avoid flowers as Satan does the form of the cross. Show me the poorest hovel with a plant in its window, and I will show you inside of that hovel goodness and gentle ness, although clad in the rags of poverty. Hesscr has them for sa'c. The Memory of a Mother. When temptation appears, and we are almost pcrs taded to do wrong, how often a mother's word of warning will calj to mind vows that are rarely broken. Yes, the memory of a mother has saved many a poor wretch from going astray. Tall grass may be growing over the hallowed spot where all her earthly remains re pose ; the dying leaves of autumn may be whirled over it, or the white mantle of winter may cover it from sight; yet the spirit of her, when hewal-sin the right path, appears, and gently, softly and mournfully calls to him, when wan dering off into the ways of error. 3Tsrr3 Injf Titles. 1 There are a class of American ladies in Rome who are setting their caps for the Roman nobility. Many of the no bility are said to be poor, and the one thing a Count wants is money, provided he gets an American woman with it. Europeans expect from each other a ped igree as long as a ramrod, but "I'm an American," puts genealogy out of doors, and there's no further talk abou: lions rampant or bears couchant, heroic grand unclcs and di.-tinguisheJ great-grand-nephews. Blood is pitted against dollars It is considered highly fashionable and trancendentally honorable to become Mrs. Count Maccaroni ; not a thouzlit is ever given to the character or capacity of the Count ; his title gives him a litany of virtues, and of course, he must be good, and a useful member of society. The visit of Red Cloud to Washing ton is nol likely to re-ult in a permanent peace. From all that can be learned, the Indians are gathering their strength for a desperate struggle, and have al ready made a beginning of tlieir horrid work. It is the opinion of liens. Sher man and Sheridan that an Indian war is imminent, and is liable to burst upon the fcttlers at any moment. Whatever can be done consistently by onr Govern ment to prevent such a calamity, should be done promptly. If war must come, our border settlers should not be left un protected. It might not be amiss for these philanthropic people who were so sure they had converted Red Cbud in New York, to go to the Indian country immediately, and try their skill on some of Red Cloud's warriors. An Indian policy is needed on the borders. Red Cloud on the plains is a different person from Red Cloud in Cooper Institute. It is the Red Cloud on the plains that our -ettlers have to deal with. This is the Red Cloud that the Indian philanthro pists should deal with. Id the mean time, the Indian Ring is preparing to coin money from the blood of ioth whites aud Indians. Chicago Rcpub. An Alleghany county, Pennsylvania pastor announced fioui his pulpit an evening lecture, entitled, "Hunting an Appetite." A large audience were deeply interested, and at the conclusion of the address the pastor announced that as he had received no salary for six months past "the sexton would now col lect something for him to hunt an appe tite with."
