Geo. T. Libel!, E., formerly a res
ident of this county, is aain localizing
on the Lsavenwort'a Conservative. Ws
used to ".-tick type" alongside of George
when lie did not have tnuch thought,
probably, of writing for newspapers.
George is a spicy writer, and has many
adndrers among the patrons of the Con
tervntur. The recent ?care at Nebraska City
over the report that Bonnet (who has
received the mantle from F. A. White;
Es:p,) was expected to arrive with a
Chinaman and more iron in hi? pocket,
to commence hostilities cn the Midland,
has all blown over. Til ? Mill in I mon

A first class Barber .h p has now been

A Eailroad bridge can be constructed

it was wheeled '"into line" last evening.
We usel to know Billy when one safe ;

Sterling, who was slaughtered "in the
house of his friends," attempted to be
come a hewer of wood and drawer of
water in the house of his enemies (the
Republicans), was most effectually
snubbed by them, and he is now trying to
arrange a third party in Nebraska City.
A. Deyo, Esq., the e Violent Enrolling
Clerk of the House of representatives
of the State Legislature, gave us a call
this morning. Sre are always pleased to
meet such men as Deyo. Thc-y are the

The Tamil school rom in the base

of school was opened last Monday by
Messrs. Young and Dilley. Persons! de

may be completed.
The Columbian arrived at our levee
last evening, discharged her freight and
started up stream about 2 o'clock this a.
m. She ran into the bar just above
town, where she remained until she was
pulled off by the President this morning.
Hon. David Remington, of Burling
ton, was in the city thia morning. He
has just returned from a trip over the
Pacific roads to San Francisco, whither
he has been for the purpose of estab

the B. A: M. li. 11. Company.
J. R. Akeni, Esq., is in the city can

Married, at the Probate offi.ee, by
Judge Child, on the 2 1st of April, Mr.

radical ticket. Of course he is now con
Tinced that the other side is right.
S. Blooin & Co. have a very lare stock
of goods in their line. They have some
thing lesa than wagou load of neck ties,
from plain to fancy.
Those fine bill heads of Prole & Yeates,
done in Sve colors, were got up at the

Prol k Yeates are putting in a new
front to their drugstore, and fitting things
up in metropolitan style. They keep a
first-class store, and advertise liberally in
the Herald.
We understand that Merges & Co. are
the proprietors of the new brick yard ia
the southwest part of the eity. They
are going in quite heavy, and we doubt
not they will make a handsome profit out
of the season's work.
Sol. Miller says: "We are inclined
to think that the Indian outfit, of the
new regime, is run by the strong minded
rortion of it. The females open and
carefully examine all official business
coming to the Agencies, and if they find
nothing therein that would have a ten
dency to corrupt the morals of their hus
bands, or make them dissatisfied with
their "sphere," they graciously permit
them to loek at the papers."

that he may be down town tu-monow.
Win. Kershaw, Esq., returned from
the east yesterday.
The steamer Silver Bow passed up
this morning and the Columbian j assed

Says the Troy Times : "-Some of our
Dfcmocratie papers have taken a very
curious line with reference to the Fif
teenth amendment. They say its adop
tion is a trifiiag affair, not worth making
any fus3 over, and that the 1 'resident's
attempt to give it importance by making
it the subject of a message, wns ridicu
lous. Olc cannot help thinking of the
plucky antcdcluvian who, ilh his chin
just out of water, informed Noah that lie
did not believe th-.-re was going to be
much of a thowcr alter all."
Our best .statisticians declare that be
fore children, now in the cradle are of
age, Iowa will have double the popula
tion which Massachusetts will have and
Nebraska will rival Vermont. Four
elevenths of the Iowa population have
como in within the last decade and a
larger proportion of the Ncbra-ka. In
the matter of railroad', Iowa has not
only more miles namely 2,0'J4 than
airy State, except the five between her
and the seaboard, but has within the
last two years, built more than half as
many namely, St-,0 ajt all the miles
overbuilt in Massachusetts.
The St. Jo.-eph Uuiju, docs not deal
fairly withour townsman, Van. Armun.
He published a card in the Ilr.itAl.H re
cently denouncing the Union. That pa
per treats the matter as a jest, and says:
"We had confiiently hoped to be able
to lay before our readers occasionally a
letter from a prominent and hb.rhly in'iu
e:itial citiz.n of Nebraska, but from the
following card in the Piutt.-mouth Herald
it will be seen that he respectfully de
clines, owing to previous engagements."
The Lit ion then copies Van's card.
This is hardly fair, as Mr. Van Annan
did not decline on the ground of previ
ous engagements, but on t!m ;ouu 1
that the Lnton was too lusigriiUcaut a
sheet for him to waste his talciit on.
And then, it was very naughty for it to
drag in the matter of hotel bilisaud then
refuse to make the necessary apologies
when called on to do so. If the Union.
"or any other man" in St. Joseph has
doubts as to Van Annan's standing as a
business man, as a oeialLt, a moralist or
a financialist, we most respectfully refer
them to their townsman Tiros. E. Tootlo.
who is acquainted with Mr. Van Annan,
and who is ever ready to speak favorably
of business talent.
There are more new buildings now go

They liavo a fellow in Omaha who
claims to be the second Christ. He is
probably trying to imitate Geo. Francis
Train, and has got one notch ahead.
The dirty, thieving, murdering red
skins who were in town today belong to
the family known as the Otoea. Some
cf them wear broad brimmed hats.
Tha Burlington Ilaicl-Fe very ap
propriately denoimnates the proclama
tion of President Grant announcing the
Fifteenth Amendment a3 a part of the
Constitution as "placing the key etoue
in the arch."
A number of the Lo family have been
in town to-day; and if anything in the
thape of humanity can be found that is
any lower than they are we have no de
sire to look upon thcra. Thc.a "noble
red men" amused a large crowd of spec
tator: during the day by shooting at a
nickel piece stuck in a split stick. It was
fery innocent pastime, much better
than killing white men and women.
The Steamer La Barge came up this
morning. She had a serious time get
ting past the mouth of Platte. The
changes have been so great at the mouth
of Platte this season as to almost pro
hibit navigation above our city.
Large quantities of corn are being
chipped every day from Plattsicouth,
by rail. All grain is now shipped by
rail from this city in bulk, being a great
saving over the old way ef shipping in
sacks. Cars are being loaded every day
at the foot of Main street.
The Fremont Trihune cojjiss our item
relative to the report that there was col
lusion between tho prisoner Smith who
broke iail there, and the oflieers, and
sp.ts no such thought is entertained
there. It admit3 that seme person as
sisted in the escape, but insists that it
was none of the officers.
The representatives of the different
railroads connecting with Omaha met in
that city recently to try to devise some
means of facilitating transportation of
freight across the Missouri river at that
place. After holding 2 conference they
went home again without adopting any
reform. Wait until the B. & M. reaches
Kearney that will regulate matters.
The Omaha Herald speaks of Omaha
as a town "without a rival." That is a
pretty heavy joke on Bellevuo and Blair.
The supply train which accompanied
the cavalry company to the Blue river to
establish a post, returned and crossed the
east side of the river this afternoon.
There is a doctor in Chillicothe who
prescribes S3 follows for cold in the head :
Water, 0; sugar, 1 ; whis.key, total

If you hear the wife of a printer on a
morning paper speaking of bcr "late
husband," do not infer that he ha3 gone
where the woodbine twinetli. She means
that ha don't get home very early.
A new democratic paper is being talked
ef at Nebraska City, and Morton dars
them to start it. This reminds us of
Artemus Ward when he stood ready to
"sacrifice all his first wife's relations" to
assist his country. Mortoa stands ready
to spend all of Ilicldliis r.ione to fight
for Morton and his set.
