Mr. Merriman has resigned the Rail
Road Agency at East Plattsmouth, and
Mr. Wentz has been appointed in his
stead. Merriman takes a situation on
the U. P. Road, we did not learn what

Iowa. S r. Smith is an attorney, and
visits our city with a view to locate
here. We hope he may see it to his
advantage to stay with us, as he is the

him he appears to have all the requis
ites of success prominent among which

Mr. Harris. Land Commissioner of
the B. k M. of Nebraska, arrived from
the west this morning.
Capt Butt, of the Railroad Transfer
boat arrived from Burlington by the ex
press train this morning, and fired up
this afternoon ready for business.
The new machinery for the city ferry
is on the east bank of the river, and will
be brought over to-morrow. The boat
will be ready to run in about a week.
It is eaid that oil and water will not
mix, but we saw a fellow endeavoring to
mix "benzine" and water yesterday. He
placed a large quantity of "benzine" in
side of his hide, and then broke through j
the ice while crossing the river.

the admission of Virginia. We know
that as a general rule set speeches are
rodmus to the ordinary reader, but we
think this one will be generally read and
endorsed, as it treats of a subject in
which all are interested, that of recon
struction.
The ice has been gradually loosen
ing since yesterday evening, and about
noon to-day it shoved down from the
mouth of riatte to nearly opposite Main
street, where a large cake lodged. The
river is clear of ice from the upper ferry
lai.ding to mouth of Platte. Should the
present warm weather continue boats
may be looked for about the 20th or 25th.

There are a large number of strangers
in and about the city looking for prop
erty, and changes aae becoming more fre
quent than heretofore. Owners of real
estate are not getting so extravagant in
their ideas as many feared they would,
and we are glad to know that plenty of
property can be had at fair figures. Pur
chasers must expect to pay a little more
now than one year, or evcu dia
months ago, and they will have to pay
still higher in another six months or !

There is a report in circulation that a
stranger attempted to cross the river on
the ice near the rock point last Thursday
night and broke through, and that noth
ing more was seen of him. "We give little
credence to this report, but would sug
rpsr. that if there iaanv truth in it the
person who saw the man break in should
have at once reported the facts, in order 1
that he might be identified and his
friends informed of his late it possiDie,
even if nothing could be done to rescue
him.
Hon. T. M. Marquett returned from
Lincoln last evening, where he has been
on business for the Railroad Company.
We learn from him that the Company

acres of land under the State grant in
Jefferson county as near m a body as
possible, with a view to settling a colony
thereon.
The "Morning Star Minstrels" will
sing, at their next concert, that soul
stirring song commencing,

They entertained the excursionists last
evening with some excellent pieces.
The ice broke loose yesterday so as to
allow the "President" to make one trip !
to the upper landing, but she was
hemmed in again fast night by heavy )

was made this morning to break through,
but the ice was found too heavy.

on the B. k M. in Nebraska yesterday,
lie will be delayed several days before
reaching Ashland by unfinished mason
work, but will reach that place by the
