The 'Calico I'arty" lat night was a complete success. The attendance was large, and everything passed off pleas antly. ' The Republican thinks that with "a little fixing" the O. & S. W. and the O. & N. W. Railroads will be very good roads. We are glad to hear it. The CftronicU has a WabLington cor respondent who signs himself "Looking Around." Wonder if he is "looking around" like the fellow whow Hays, of Fremont Tribune, teh about Commissioner Harris arriyed this morning from the east, and has opened an office on the corner of Vine and Third Streets, where persons interested can en quire in regard to the B. & M. Railroad Lands. They have had a "match game" at manufacuring horse shoes in Omaha and some fellow came out Becond best. The winner turned out 101 shoe3, all finished except corking, in two hours and nineteen minutes. The JVcm; advertising a roll of green backs as ''lost between Ware's Bank and Wm. E. Hill," remindes us of sundry bonds Issued by Otoe county to the B. & M. R. R. which was most effectually lost between Hamburg and J. Sterling Morton. State Journal. Coal brought over the B. Sc M. and C. B. & SL Joe Railroads sells at Nebraska City, by the car load, at $9.50 per ton. This is much cheaper fuel than they have had at Nebraska City heretofore and illus trates what we have always said, that the completion of the B. Sc M. to Plattsmouth was a "big thing" for the entire State. We are in receipt of a note of thanks from Rev. Geo. S. Alexander, Commis sioner of Agriculture for the State, for our note in regard to the B. k M. R. R. Lands, inserted in the article taken from the advanced sheets of his book, and he assures us the facts f-hall appear in the work. The Herald is just now filled with matter relating to the interests of the State, and the Commitsioner will find it profitable to draw heavily from our columns. We are aiming to. give nothing but facts, and to give those in a concise manner. The nc"7 M. E. Church is not quite Completed, but is rie-ir enough so a3 to hold services. It is a neat, wel arranged building, and is a credit to the tociety and to the pastor who has labored tsO dilligently in its construction. The en trance, the class room3, and the gallejy are all well arranged, and the seats are of that pattern which allows a persons uiind to attend to the sermon instead of con stantly studying how to change position for the better. Dedication sermon next Sabbath by Rev. G. De La Matyr. From Friday Daily. Biliin &, Son have commenced the erection of their business house on Main street. The B. k M. Company in Nebraska will have nine locomotives on the road west from Plattsmouth as soon as the river opens. . The Railroad barge i undergoing ex tensive repairs. It will be put in nrst cla s condition for next seasons business. The space between the "hog chains" is being widened so as to admit the trans fer of passenger coaches. Another meeting of Bil'.v Millers 'd s- contented grumblers" has been held at I vers' School-house in Otoe county re- cent'y- They elected a committee of four to attend a county convent n n to be held Feb. 5th and instructed them to enquire intc the "means used" to secure the issuing of the $150,000 in bonds, in which certain citizens of that county are supposed to be interested. If Saunders, of auction notoriety, is as liberal with other people as he is with the printers he would receive the bles sings of all mankind. He astonished the Herald office yesterday with a half dozen cans of those superb fresh oysters. 'Long may he wave," and may "Junction City rival New York and Plattsmouth. The business men of Burlington are beginning to branch out and canvass for trade out here in Nebraska. We see no reason why Burlington could not secure a large portion of the western trade just as well as to let all go to Chicago. In fact, we think she can if her wholesale dealers will only advertise in the Her ALD. From Saturday' Daily From the amount of wood being stack ed up at the Rail Road Machine Shops, we judge there will be several locomo tives -in operation here next season. We should like to have the same set of Commissioners examine and report upon the first ten miles of each road asking lands under the State grant. We judge the reports, if made truthfully, would be very interesting. A correspondent of the Nebraska City Chronicle accused Post Master Hoclistet- ler, of that city, of making his office a headquarter for the Democratic lights of Otoe. We have heard such things inti mated heretofore, but had hoped they had no foundation in truth. T. B. Glenn, of the firm of Doom, Glenn &, Co., at Ashland, has our thanks for numerous names of good men ad le to our Ashland subscription roll. Send them along, Thomas. We desire every good man to read the Herald, and those who are not so very good may de rive benefit from a careful perusal of it The Herald takes especial delight in assisting to build up Plattsmouth and the entire region of country between Plattsmouth and Ft Kearney, including the fine town of Ashland aai surround LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY.
