two miles southwest of town, was discov
ered in a fit last Saturday, which was
pronounced hydrophobia by Mr. Adams
and Dr. Schildknecht The. dog ran
over to Mr. Maxwell's house, camo close
up to Mrs. Maxwell, went from there to
Mr. "Walker's place, endangering Mrs.
Walker and her children, and then start
ed back towards 3Ir, .Adam's house.
Parties who were in pursuit of him here
succeeded in bringing him down by a
well directed shot. This is the first case
of mad dog we have known of in this vi-o-inity
for a 1qd time.
D. Smith, of Burlington, Land
Agent of the IJ. & M. R. R. was in the
city la.-.t Monday. Ho took home with
him, for Superintendent Perkins, the
finest pair of KIk horns we have teen for
many years. They were not m large as
some Been on the plains, but were sound,
jMirfect and f-hapely. He procured them
from Sam. 31. Chapman, Esq., of this
city.
Mr. A. J. B. Abbey, and Mr. Suther
land, President and Medical Adviser of
Life Association of America, were in the
city several days last week. They rep
resent a rather novel mode of Life Insu
rance, whereby the party insured han
dles his own money until a loss is met
with. The plan is purely mutual, and
can be fully comprehended by any per
son who will examine it.
Capt. Palmer,of N. J. Bond's Produce
House in this city, informs us that he
has recently visited a large scope of
country west and south of this city, and
he places the wheat crop as follows: for
the first ten miles west from the river, (
he thinks the average will be from !
twelve to eighteen bu.shels, for the sec
ond ten miles at from eighteen to twenty
bushels,and west of thataCfrom twenty
five bushels per acre up to thirty-five.
The It. It. Co. will probably cross
enough iron to the west bank of the
river, before December, to lay sixty
miles of track west from I'lattsuiouth.
Arrangements have been made for run
uing 1, 000 cars of construction material
over the D. V. and Hock Inland roads,
j prior to the completion of the 13. k M.
across Iowa. That looks like business
