BIHJtTI Young man you that was latt night geen going behind that screen in the doorway of a bar-room before taking another social glass, let us have a little talk together. Do you know that it is the first step to drunkenness, degradation and utter ruin Perhaps you think not, but not a day passes without proving beyond a doubt that such is the ca-se. "Oh, you say, -'I never get tipsy ; never drink to excess ; have perfect control of njy appetite, and am sure I'll never be a drunkard. In fact, I don't like the stuff; although I occasionally take a social glass just for pastime, nothing more. Ju.-t so thousand.- of young men be fore you have talked men who might have done much for the welfare and ad vancement of their kind, and who might have bi-criled their names prominently on the roll of honored ones of their coun try ; but who instead swell the police records, ami make prisons a necessity. - Did you ever see amu that, before he was entirely lost, would accept the word "drunkard" as applying to himself? Never ; not a man lives who expected to become a drunkard when he took the first glass ofthat liquid damnation, which the love of money causes men to man ufacture for the destruction of their fel low men. But you .say there is no harm in it if used moderately. Neither is there dan ger in the cobra de capello if we keep beyond hii reiich. But if you should see one of your friends take one into his hands aud2Jcommenee playing with it, you would uutLyubtedly declare hiiu in sane. Yet there would be no danger if the scrper.t did not bite him if he handled it in such manner as to preclude the possibility of being injured .thereby. Either case would involve life ; and, in making the former experiment a man risks not only Lis life, but the happiness of his friends, his mother, all that should be held dear on earth, and his immortal soul. Young man, stop ! Think over all the misery you know to be justly chargeable to intemperance, and of the fearful risk you incur every time you taste the vile stuff, and it is to be hoped you will not again have the courage to visit the de mon in his lair, even if he is screened from the view of your sisters, mother, wife or sweetheart. A few years ago, Thoma3 Wilson was a eoler man, though he "occasionally took a drink just for pastime." He won the l)ve and confidence of an estimable young lady ; they were married and for a time lived happily. But alas, he had contracted the habit of using spirituous liquors moderately ; he became oblivious of danger, and in a short time was a drunkard, a demon, and a few days since added murder to the catalogue of his crimes, by killing the wife of' hL bosom she whom he had taken from her parents and sworn to protect. There are three orphans, tender little children, left to know that their mother was mur dered, their father was a murderer, and that all their misfortunes are the results of intemperance! Think before taking another drink ! A IeT Thronsth the Window. The oxistanec of happiness, whether in community or private family, is not to be c meealed. Ail that wo do. even the smallest action of our lives, is tinctured by the condition of our minds. If we are iil-JisnoFcd those things which have lecii performed witli cheerfulness and alacrity are done merely because there is a sort of necessity for their perf jrmance, and the observant eye will soon detect whether or not the heart accompanies the duty. As long as we are happy, we are eager to announce it by smiles, bright looks, cheerfulness, energy and activity. We think of a hundred means of awak tnin? delight, which could not have sug gested themselves to less contented minds. The world is peeping throueh your wind ow. Let it find you making happiness in your house. A Bcantiful 1.1 ea. Away among the Alleghanies, there is a spring, so small that a single ox, in a summers day. could drain it dry. It steals jts unobtrusive way among the hills, till it spreads out in the beautiful Ohio. Thence it stretches away a thou sand miles, leaving on its banks more than a hundred villages and cities, and many a cultivated farm, and Waring half a thousand steamboats. Then joining the Mississippi, it stretches away and away some twelve hundred miles' more, till it falls into the emblem of eternity. It is one of the great tributaries of the ocean, which obedient only to God, shall roll and roar till the ana-el", with one foot on the sea and the other on the land, shall lift up his hand and swear that time shall be no longer. So with moral influence. It is a rill a rivulet a riv er an noean, bounless and fathomless as eternity ! A man was tried some time back for stealing several clocks.
