We learn that two or three houses were blown down yesterday morning between this city and Bock Bluffs. There will be thirty different parties of men at work grading Ix-tween this city and Lincoln next week. See advertisement of "'farm for sale," by II. K. Anderson. Here is a bargain for some person who wants a small farm. It is estimated that over forty thous and acres of prairie were broken up in Cass county last wasHi. Over two hundred and fifty harvest ing machines have leen sold and deliv ered in this city within the past month. I'aimde has liecn making improve ments in front of the Herald building hi the shape of a nice new sidewalk. Some person should advertise light ning rods for sale in this locality. They nuM sell well this season. N. .1. Bond was in the city last week lookincr after the interests of his house in this place. A. Deyo, Esq., of Salt Creek, was in the city Saturday. He informs us that crops are excellent in his region of coun try. . The contract to furnih blank books for the State Auditor's office has lieen awarded to the office of the Iowa State i!:,;tt r. Mr. Thus. I'oane, Chief Engineer of I he 15. & M. B. B. in Nebraska, arrived l.i-t Friday and established his head quarters in this city. Street sprinklers have lx-cn abundant this season. Every village has had mie. They run day and night, and have a very fn e ileliverv at times. Track laying on the B. & M. B. B. in JVehrsika, will commenced inside of six ty days, and trains will run to Ashland, if imt to Lincoln, this fall. Mr. liichftrd Vivian, of Portage City, Wi-eunsin, has leased the Platte Valley Ili)iie r.f ('apt. Murphy, and took pos-scs-Km lal Moudav. There are four different parties of en pinccrs laying out work fur the Railroad "ttiraetors west from this city, and two 'r thret- more parties will Ik put on soon. Ih-isel has his brick yard about ready to cuiiiineiux operations. He is just, in time. The It. R. Co. will want several hundred thousand for the construction of depots and other buildings. The ChmincJ? objects to the citizens V Nebraska City throwing the con tents of their slop buckets on the ride vrnlks, and tniuks the practice dangerous to "store clothes. " 7. A portion of the goods for the B. & M. Railroad Store arrived by the Mary McDonald Monday evening. Among other things we noticed forty chests of tea. I j. (I. Todd. Esq., was in the city Tuesday, purchasing machinery for har vesting. He informs us that crops are injured some in his locality, but nut se rious'v. Do you want to save .rV) cents? If you do, call at the IIkkaed office and settle up arrearages and then advance $2. in) for a years subscription, instead of waiting and having to pay $2.50. Mr. I. G. Todd informs us that his section of country is filling up very rap idly, and that the prospects are that within another year nearly every acre of lands not left for roads will be fenced UP' - The railroad track, where it crosses Main street, will be on an even grade with the street, and on the extreme east line of Second street. This will give am ple room for "Busses" etc., to and from the passenger depot. I'ho . steamer Argonaut No. 2 had about fifteen feet blown off the top of one of her smoke stacks by the wind yester day morning. She was at Rocky Point, just below the city, when the wind struck her. e are in receipt of the Engineering and Mining Journal, a weekly publica tion devoted to the interests of the me chanic and miner. Price $5. Address Western & Companv, 37 Park Row, New York. The 10th of July was fixed upon, by the dt.ciples of Miller, for "the wreck f matter and crash of .worlds," but some mistake has been made in their cal culations, for the thing has "not been did." The Ilerold Bros, have their new building on Main street nearly ready to occupy. Their example should be fol lowed by at least a hundred others. i Iittemouth must hare more bitsiness r.f.i.e immediately. Alexander & Co., have opened their meat inaaket at Fiekler's old stand, cor ner Main and Second t-ts., where 'yon can get all kinds of choice meats at the lowest prices. They pay the best prices for fat cattle. See advertisement next week. See advertisement of N. J. Bond, Commission Merchant and Grain Dealer. Capt. Palmer, who is well known to most of the citizens of this county, has charge of the House in this city, and is paying the highest market prices for grain. A gentleman who came down from Ashland last Saturday informs lis that he .saw fifteen different parties of men at work on the Railroad between Ashland ami this city. There will be a party on every mile of road before next Satur day. - j The weather so far this w;ason has been very unfavorable for Railroad Con tractors. It has rained so much thai they can only work about half the time, and a portion of the time they do work is devoted to repairing damage to work already done. We understand Mr. Holland pro poses ojKning his house under the name of the City Hotel. He has been fixing things up on the inside of the building during the past week, and will have the outside appearance materially changed soon by a free application of paint. Win. Quick, Esq.,. Division Superin tendent of the TX. S. Express Co. from Chicago west, was in the city Friday. He generally finds things in such shape here that he only stays an hour or two there is no necessity for an extended examination of the books. There is a great cry fr houses to rent. We venture to say that five hundred new houses would be too small a number to supply the demand for the next twelve months. There are several new build ings going up. and others will Iks com menced soon, but they are only a drop in the bueketfull that is needed. Who will build more houses? We learn that a little son of Mr. Ilohl schuh was severely binned by the explo sion of a quantity of loose powder on the loth. He and another boy obtained some powder, strewed it ou the ground, and Mr. Hohlschuh's boy touched a burning match to it. His face was badly. burned, but fortunately he will sustain no permanent injury. Fitzgerald k. Mallory, contractors, ad vertise for 2)U teams and 1000 laborers, to work on the B. &. 31. B. The Presbyterian Sabbath School of this city, was reorganized last Sabbath morning, by re-electing J. N. Wise Su perintendent ; Thos. Evans. Librarian and Secretary ; John R. Clark, Treasurer, and the appointment of a committee of three, consisting of J. N. "Wise, Wm. Kerhaw and Thos. Evans" to draft a Constitution and By-Iiws for the regu lation of the School in future. The storm yesterday morning was as severe as an- we have had for some time. The wind carried away the entire east gable of Finisher's boarding house on Second street. The water came down in torrents for a short time, and ran shoe mouth deep on the entire breadth of Main street. We have not heard from the country at the present writing, but fear much damage has been done the crops. The (7i ronicr says '"(Jibbs" the pro fessor of the toll-bridge-has not contract ed to build the Midland Pacific road but intends visiting Plattsmouth. Send him along, Waters; the "freedom of the city" will be tendered him, and he shall re ceive all that attention and consideration due a representative man- of 2braha City. By the way, does the "Prof." deal very extensively in "beefsteak" now-a-days? A small bit of a "scrimmage" occurred in front of the B. & 31. Boihoad Store Saturday evening, in which one party got his face bruised slightly and two oth er parties got slashed a little with a knife in the hands of the aforesaid first party. The man who handled the knife was la ken before Recorder Wells and fined 50. Not having the "stamps" he was sent to the lock up. In accordance with the law enacted last winter, County Clerk Spurlock took possession of the books aud papers per taining to the office of the Clerk of. the District Court, on the morning of the 5th. The commissioners have had a doorway cut through the partition sep erating the office rooms of the County Clerk and District Clerk, so that the two sets of papers and books are kept in seperate rooms, but can be looked after by the same person. It seems to us that some people in the vicinity of Nebraska City should be fined for "contempt of the Midland Compa ny." In one column of a newspaper we see where an Indiana man named Con verse advertises to receive projwsals un til the 25th of July for doing some gra ding, before it is determined whether it will be done at all, and in another col umn of the same paper we see a state ment that men and teams are going out every day to work on said grade. Isn't it wicked for them to act so? Where's White? We regret to notice that, in our capi tal city, some people manifest an unnec essary amount of hostility towards Fre mont, and instead of working with us and in a manner to secure good for them selves, they are trying to wield a ktife which will eventually disembowel them selves. -r-Fremont Tribune. Fremont is iut the only place that "some Lincoln people" are hostile to wards," They appear to think the sun was made to shine for certain localities, and for the benefit of certain men ; and they would do their own city an injury if thereby their especial pets could be gratified. "Thomas, my sou," of the Lincoln Midland .Journal, refers to what he terms LV.so.me trifling grammatical inaccuracies" in a .recent number of the Herald. He is supposed to bo the tame "Thom as" referred to in the following : "Tommy, my son, fetch in a stick of wood. "Ah! my dear mother, re sponded the jouth, ''The grammatical lortioii of your education has lecn sadly neglected. You should Jiave said lhoui:is, my son, transert from that re cumbent collection of combustible mate rial uixin the threshold of this edifice one of the curtailed excrosensces of a de fuet log." The Chicago lleptddican has been col lecting and publishing reports from all sections of the Northwest, in regard to the condition and prospects of the crops. At this crisis in the growth of grain, this mass of information, which comes direct from the farmers .themselves, is of great value and interest; and the enterprise displayed by the Ilepullican in collect ing it, is only another evidence of the interest it takes in all that iertains to the welfare of the great Northwest. The llejndAiain, is always wide awake in providing a first-class paper in all re flects, and we heartily commend it to our readers who desire a metropolitan journal. Marshal 3Iurphy is making it lively for those pugnacious chaps who delight in bruising each others faces to the hor ror of other people who chance to be in the vicinity. He is starting out right w ith this class of men, and "brings them up standing" before the Recorder every time they commence a row. The Re corder piles on a liberal fine, and if the culprit has no money he is allowed the privilege of working out the fine and costs on the highway. They will soon learn that our city authorities mean to have peace within their jurisdiction, or make the disturbers thereof pav for their "sport," ' We have stated through tne Herald on several different occasions that no correspondence would be allowed a place in our columns that came to us unaccom panied by the real name and address of the author. 3Iore, this is a well estab lished rule with most newspapers and should be understood by all persons writ ing articles for publication. The neces sity of a strict adherence to this rule will be readily understood w hen we say that the editor of. a newspaper is held responsible for all articles which he refu ses or is unable to give the name of the real author when it is demanded by those who have a right to know. "Taxpayer" will understand why his or her article did not appear in to-day's paper. We hope we shall not be under the necessity of witholding another article from this cause. If "Taxpayer" will send his or her real name we will cheerfully publish the communication. We do not desire the name for publication, but that we may know who the author is. out stat 1:. The Brownville Democrat makes the following answers to a series of questions asked by a'gentlcman from Indiana : 1st. The health of Nebraska is, for a new country, remarkably fine ; and there being no local cause for disease, must continue to be excellent. 2d. Our water is splendid and dis tributed in quantities to suit the wants of the people now here and the millions to conic hereafter. 3d. Our soil may be equalled but can not be surpassed, for richness and depth. It produces in abundances corn, wheat, oats, barley, rye, and almost every kind of vegetable that can be raised out of the ground in anv country in the world. About 40 to CO bushels of corn to the acre ; wheat 1 2 to 25 bushels to the acre ; oats from 50 to 75 bushels to the acre , barley and rye 20 to 35 bushels to the acre. 4th and 5th. There is no government land unclaimed within seventy-five miles of this ioint. Beyond this, there isauy quantity of tine lands that can be enter ed 'at oue dollar and twenty-five cents per acre, or may be taken as homesteads. Nearer the Missouri river the best of unimproved lands can be bought at from 3 to $15 per acre. Gth. There is sufficient supply of tim ber of a good quality for all practical purposes, though not any too much to interfere with rapidit- and case of open ing up farms. 7th. Our climate is usually more mild and pleasant than Suites further east. Most of new-comers express rapturous delights at our beautiful seasons. 8th. We have but little low or flat lands; all of a most beautifully rolling formation, adapted to wet or dry weather. 9th. It is not a level nor a mountainous country, only slightly undulating, with here and there valleys of incomparable lovliness. . loth. The climate being mild, water in abundance and grasses luxuriant and nutritous, renders Nebraska the stock raisers paradise. Stock of all kinds find ready market and at a good price. 11th. Produce, and evervthimr that can be raised by the fanner, sells for a good round price for the cash. 12th. The laborer is well paid for his work. 1 3th. The St. Joseph & Council Bluffs railroad runs within three miles of our city ; also, we will soon have in running order the Cuinc-y, Missouri & Pacific, railroad, which crosses the Missouri river at this point. The St. Louis & Nebras ka Trunk, and the Rock Island & Nish na valley railroad, which also crosses the Missouri river at this joint. 14th and 15th. Wild animals and In dians are not to be found, except far out towards the outer confines of the settle ments, both of which are perfectly harm less provided they are kept at a resject able distance. We hope Our answers may not only in euce a fewt but scores to find homes on the rich soil of Nebraska. The dispatch of Judge Caton, Horace White and others denouncing the report of I. N. Morris on the Union Pacific Railroad, has broueht out a reply by 3Ir. 3Iorris which he directs to J mi ire Caton in person. We give the concluding par agraph of Mr. Morris' letter which is de cidedly spicy: "You are a, millionaire now. Judge, you made your money out of telegraphs and railroads, and worship at no shrine but Mammon.
