Ajax says we have "played a lone hand
against adversity'' and are going to
"make four points." We arc unable
to literally interpret his language, yet
we think he is probably alxmt correct.
If he means that the Herald and its
editor have stood by the right and the
interests of the State, county and city,
regardless of all opposition, then we say
he has bit it. And as to the "four

The Omaha Herald hears of and re
joices over the prospects of a railroad at
Nebraska City, but don't hear of or re
joice worth a ccut over the fact that men
and teams are already at work building a
road from l'lattsmouth to Ft. Kearney.
That is a "white boss of another color,"
isn't it? The Herald instead of rejoic
ing over our line of road, exclaimed
"Men of Omaha, will you read the hand
writing on the railroad wall?" "There
is dancer in the west!"
ritzgerald has sub-let the contract for
clearing the brush and timber from the
railroad track between this city and the
mouth of the Platte llivor, and men are
working above Ripple's Brewery.
We understand the Pennsylvania Cen
tral has sent out anotherman to hunt up
that engineer which slipped away and
eame out last Spring to swindle the peo
ple out of the Midland road.
Simpson, Mickelwait & Co. have se
cured lots on the corner of Main and
Sixth streets for their lumber yard.
They will move soon, and give way for
the railroad.
The Lincoln Statesman corrects the
impression that the Pennsylvania Cen
tral Co. has taken hold of the road from
Nebraska City, and says it has not pur
chased said road and is not building it,
a-r J erc led to belicre.
There came near lx.'ing a fire last Sun
day in the buildina; formerly owned by
lb L. Levi, on Main Street, between
Fourth andFi ft h. Tlie stove pipe bad
been pushed up through the ventilator
with the supposition that it connected
with the flue, which, however, was not
within five feet of where the pipe went
through the ceiling. Timely assistance
prevented a calamity, as the burning of
that building would have caused the
burning of four or five others. Look out
for your stove pipes.
Thomas Poane, Esq. of Boston, Las
been appointed Chief Engineer of the B.
& M. K. R. in Nebraska, and will take
immediate charge of the work. The ap
pointment of a Chief Engineer for this
road became necessary from the fact that
the work west from Plattsmouth, while
prosecuted by the same men, is -under
an entire new organization from the line
cast of Plattsmouth. Mr. Doane has
the reputation of being one of the besi
cng5rtrs in the United States. . Tie has
done th surveying for some of the most
difficult works in the country, among
other?, for the bridge at Omaha.
A young man named .John Connelly,
bar tender in the Exchange Saloon, was
brouirht before Recorder ells hist tat-
urday on the charge of having felonious
ly obtained $100 from a man who had
been in the Saloon. The statement of
the prosecuting witness was to the effect
that he had made a 5 lu t with a friend
upon the name of "the man who made a
speech favoring the. Fenians (both part
ies Vicing Irishmen, and both ''taking
stock" itl the man that nuide thespcech)
one contending that his name was Sum
mers ami the one who claimed to have
lost the $100 asserting (correctly) that
bis name was Sumner. The stakes were
placed iu Connelly's hands, and the wit
ness claimed that bavintr no small bills
be placed iu his hands a 100 bill. When
the ix't was ueciueu UoimMiy. only ac
counted for $ 10 as having been placed in
lis hands. After Inarms the evidence
lecorder ells di.se harged the prisoner
in consequence of the prosecution failing
to prove where the act was tlone.
