nrday evening. The man who was their
fiddler refused, when 12 o'clock came,
to play for them longer. Hi3 doing this
would necessarily break up the dance-
A part wishing to continue it a quarrel
took place on the spot. The quarrel ter
initiated the danco at the house and the
party dispersed going np street to their
homes, it appeared from the evidence
that Brown and Stewart, wha were of
tbo party,- waylaid the fiddler at the
corner of a street, and when he passed,
th? night being dirk, Brown threw a
brick bat at him -which hit him on the
head and felled him to the pavement.
His skull was fractured by the blow.
This was "not known however, by the
parties who remained with ' him, and a
few young men who came to their relief.
They supposing him not badly injured,
after having washed the bleod away
from his head, took him to a tavern and
put him to bed, leaving him alone nntil
morning. In the mortiinjr he was found
dead, and the physicians thought he mut
have diid soon after be was placed in
bed. -These are the circumstances. - The
trial which followed resulted in sending
Brown to the penitentiary for eleven
years.
Mercer, for opening her liquor shops,
had to have tbe blood of an immortal
being spilled on ber pavement, and to
incarcerate a boy in State Prison for
eleven years. This fearful warnins" tad
its effect upon the people nnd they beve
closed the rum holts again,by tha strong
