as I have given them a call, too, I will

pression I heard was frn a being, seat

lows: "By G-d, the drinks are on you
this time: I'll take whisky.'' When the
object who stands behind.the bar he is
not a ' man made his appearance and
asoertained what they the players
would have; af tor giving him their orders,
whioh was about as follows: "Whisky,
straight;1' in a few moments the soul
destroyer was placed before them and
gulped down at one swallow. It is also
stated, and upon good authority, that
this same whisky den is kept open on
Sabbath all day, and men (?) congre
gate to play cards, and so forget God's
holy day. . . . .
Passing from this I will now give
what some of your citizens calel the first
class (?) saloon of your city a visit the
Billiard Hall. This time I ascend a flight
of stairs and open the door, the first
thing I run against is a 'soreen," noth
ing daunted, I pass' around the object
and gaze npon two billiard tables, with
two men at eaoh of them, engaged in

There are but two more to visit, and

them about the same as in the last. I
have said enough about these whiskv
dens, and inform your readers that if
they don't wish to visit these iniquitous
sinks, they can call on several of your
merchants and get some ef the "devil's
lightning" in bottles, nicelv labelled,
warranted to be genuine "old rye."
Before taking my departure I called
pon a friend and asked him if he had
in his possession the "Ordinances of the
City of Plattsmouth," being answered
in the affirmative, and having them hand
ed to me, I commenced a search, arid
found in Ordinance No. 47, sec. 4, that
"The same will not keep a
disorderly house, nor allow gambling,
with cards, dice, or any other implements
or devices used in eamblinsr within h;
house."
Also, in same Ordinance, section 5. 1
find that '
"No person or persons to whom license
may be granted under this Ordinance
shall be permitted to keep open his or
their place of business, or sell cr dis.
pose of liquors on the Sabbath day."
I also refer you to Ordinance No. 62,
section 2 :
"And further, all gambling or playing
of cards, within said building, or any
out buildings, for any consideration,
shall be deemed unlawful under tha pro
visions of this Ordinance "
I would ask the Citv Counoil. what tie
meaning of this section is ? If playing
cards for whisky is not gambling accord
ing to their own doctrine, then I would
like to know why they inserted these
words, "for any consideration?'-' ,1
would also ca!t the attention of yonr
worthy City Marshal t this Ordinance,
ani see what it requires of him.
