V: As I wts'called to yoar flour ishing city on business and compelled to top erer nigbt,I took the occasion to take aBtro1!! through your streeti and note the improvements daring the daylight, and the di's-improvements after dark. In tba former your correspondent was rather snrprWed to realize what a great con trast there is in the improvements mada within the last three years to thOBe of ix or seven ago. To see the thrift and energy of your business men almost eaused me to regret my settlement in this little place I might say isolated bat, still, I think we will get the B. M. R. R., and then, where will Plattsmouth stand? But to the latter, the J-im-vrovementa I mean your whisky dens I was sorry to see bo many of them; and as I have given them a call, too, I will endeavor to give the puhlio a general idea of the innide of these'.dens. Your correspondent will commence with t3 one on 21 street, near the bridge, fter descending a pair of stairs, I 61, the first thing I see is theeard tole3, with men engaged in pliylng. The first ex pression I heard was frn a being, seat at one of the table, which was as f 1- lows: "By G-d, the drinks are on you this time: I'll take whisky.'' When the object who stands behind.the bar he is not a ' man made his appearance and asoertained what they the players would have; af tor giving him their orders, whioh was about as follows: "Whisky, straight;1' in a few moments the soul destroyer was placed before them and gulped down at one swallow. It is also stated, and upon good authority, that this same whisky den is kept open on Sabbath all day, and men (?) congre gate to play cards, and so forget God's holy day. . . . . Passing from this I will now give what some of your citizens calel the first class (?) saloon of your city a visit the Billiard Hall. This time I ascend a flight of stairs and open the door, the first thing I run against is a 'soreen," noth ing daunted, I pass' around the object and gaze npon two billiard tables, with two men at eaoh of them, engaged in more at the bar, ready to swallow down BUrlillfftOIl & EliSSOUli ma poison uaoaeu mem. i qq Dot un FALL MP WINTER TRADE, 1868- E. HINCHMAIT, (Successor to Donclan Hinchman,) Druggistf& Apothecary DEALER IK Burlington Bridge Finished I do ger here, bat walk to the back part of the llall and open a door that leads into a small room; and, temperance readers, what do 70a think I saw there? Only f our men seated around the devil's table the card table and to my astonish ment, they were none other than Church going members, and one of them stands high in one of year Sabbath-Schools. Oh, Christianity, where are thy true son. porters! Bat I now descend to breathe the pure air of God once more, as I feel sick at heart to see man the image of God degrading himself below the brute. I pass on up Main street, and a sign catches my "eye, which reads "O. K. Sa loon." I enter, the same thing meets my eye as in the former a screen and behind this cover I see two or throe card and domino tables, with a being behind the bar ready to deal out that which sends the souls of so many dawn to de struction. J do not stop long until I nnd tne street again. There are but two more to visit, and they being but a fow doors apari, wi 1 say to the reader that 1 saw in each of them about the same as in the last. I have said enough about these whiskv dens, and inform your readers that if they don't wish to visit these iniquitous sinks, they can call on several of your merchants and get some ef the "devil's lightning" in bottles, nicelv labelled, warranted to be genuine "old rye." Before taking my departure I called pon a friend and asked him if he had in his possession the "Ordinances of the City of Plattsmouth," being answered in the affirmative, and having them hand ed to me, I commenced a search, arid found in Ordinance No. 47, sec. 4, that "The same will not keep a disorderly house, nor allow gambling, with cards, dice, or any other implements or devices used in eamblinsr within h; house." Also, in same Ordinance, section 5. 1 find that ' "No person or persons to whom license may be granted under this Ordinance shall be permitted to keep open his or their place of business, or sell cr dis. pose of liquors on the Sabbath day." I also refer you to Ordinance No. 62, section 2 : "And further, all gambling or playing of cards, within said building, or any out buildings, for any consideration, shall be deemed unlawful under tha pro visions of this Ordinance " I would ask the Citv Counoil. what tie meaning of this section is ? If playing cards for whisky is not gambling accord ing to their own doctrine, then I would like to know why they inserted these words, "for any consideration?'-' ,1 would also ca!t the attention of yonr worthy City Marshal t this Ordinance, ani see what it requires of him. ine ministers or your several Churches are very negligent m this great causa. Why is it? They preach Sabbath after Sabbath without saying a single worJ against the sin of drunkenness and vice of your city ; a person might infer that they were afraid of insulting some of the members, or perhaps some one in ths aadienoe. I would ask them, did Christ do so darine his ministn? nM ,. disciples and St. pnui. f0iQw. OHT bavior's example in epeking the truths "lrnespectiva of person?"
