of the deaths caused by intemperance
in this town, would present an appal
ling list. -A recolleciicn, extending
throjo'h.a period of more than half a
century, by a little special exercise.Laa
brought to mind many instances of the
aad havoo of "bcm," which had nearly
furled from memorv. To this class
death has come in no uniform mod.
It has come in the form of slow wast
ing disease, induced by alcoholic drinka
it hat come in the sudden casualty,
, euch as would seldom befall a sober
man it has come in the terrible aspect
f rlnlirium tremens it has come iu
the act of self-inflicted violence, and
has once and again and again, been
produced by the fatal rope as the means

wretched by intoxication.
And. as if all Hhis was not enough, it
has raised the murderous arci agaiost
a fellow being.. The intoxicated Peters,
who slew Jm boaom companion whom
he had sworn to protect and lovt (in all
probability,) would, not have suffered
on the gallows bad be been sober.;
And those two youths in their teens
who spent the first Monday in Juufc,
1817, in this village; who drank, then
quarrelled, would doubtless bare avoid
ed, the one a death by the tatsi axe,
and the other, one on the scaffold, had
they spent the duy in sober f dst.vity. I
might speak of another tragic scene, in
the annals of our town, partaking both
of murder and suicide, but I forbear.
It may not be amiss ho wever, to remark
on the deceptive nature of drunkenness.
A person who had been honored with
official station became ad dicted to intern
perance. He remarked ashe was about
to die' "that he nevar iaiended to be a
drunkard knew not that he was a
drunkard," and yet, he added, ''I am
dying from the effects of ardent spir
its." Such a faint outline of the woes
of drunkenness in this highly favored

That this town is a sinner above all
o titer s is not to be supposed. It is sad
to think that the above sketch, wi'.htir

enness; the justice who tigned the war
rant was one of those who signed the
license; and the sheriff who hung him
also sold liquor and kept a ten-pin al

his virtues obtained the name of the
''Little Rascal." A stranger asked I im
why this appellation was given him.
