' - " i 4 Coasider the money expended ia the ' interest of the liquor traffic. Ths cen bus of 1560 estimates ths value coholic liquors manufactured the pre: vious -year at more than forty-two million dollarsl' It is safe to eay that, by lUe-tine these Jiquors pass through the hands cf retailers, there are; ex pended in various trays connected with the wicked traffic, at least one hundred million dollars' annually. This amount of money at compound interest would pay off our national debt in less than fifteen years. It would build '4.000 colleges at a cost of S25.000 each. It would build 20,000 churches at a cost of $5,000 each. It would seud to heathen lands and support them there for twenty years, ten thousand mission , arias. Thre are 1 .QOO.OQO.O'O peo ple in the world, according to (he latest and most accural? 6taiui'C3, Allowing one minister la every thousand. inbsb: taptf, it would require 1.2CO.00O nU ionariei to supply the world's popula . lion with the gespe!. Giving, to each ; missionary SoOO annually for fifty years for his aport, would require the sum of S3.O0O.O00.O0O. Now the mney expended in' the interests of the liquor traffic, in this country alone, in one year, if placed in ths hands of our Protestant Missionary Societie. arid put at compound interest for ten years. would sustain the grand army of mis sioaaries for fifty years, and thus probably secure the conversion of the whole world to God. , - Let us look at the work. of death alone wrought by the business of the ruin teller and maker. It is estimated that 00,000 persons die annually in this country from the effects of intoxicating liquors. Allowing only, one half o: ihese(30,000)'.p have had each a wife ana tour cauJten, would 'give us lo, rkA J i i uuu wwows ana orpmns every year, These, GO.000 persons, if buried in a straight line, four feet apart, would make a row of graves 15 miles Ions Their widows and orphans, with four feet between eaea mourner, would make a funeral procession 113 miles laag. IoIlesA than six years this pro cession would extend from the Missouri river to the Rocky "lountain, a dis tance of over 600 miles. In 35 year's it would reach from the Atlantic to the Pacific ocean, a distance o 4.000 miles In the same length cf time the widows and orphans will have reached the frightful number of 5,260.000 aouU! Allowing twenty - persons to each square mile, it would require a State five liaies as Urge as New York to contain this population of widows and orphan children. ; ' AllowingTen relatives to each corpse we cave an army of bJU.000 mourners standing along the line of hese GO, 000 graves. Suppose thirty'fn'ends to eacu deceased person, outside of pr aonal relatives, we have 1. 800,000 persons. Adding these to the 000,000 relatives, wa hare a funeral procession el :,4.UU,UUU souls, which, 'giving lo each one four feet, would extend over 1,600 miles. Placing the same per sons ia carriages, allowing twenty feet , to each vehicle, the procession would reach rtcrosa the continent, from ocean to ocean. . Look at these startling facts: 60,000 persons die annually, in this country, as the victims of the rum seller; 161 persons die every day as the victims of the rum seller; bO men are busy ail ths time digging graves for the victims of the rum seller; 160 persons are busy every day making coflins for the vic tims of the rum-seller. About one hundred wives and three hundred children hare this day been deprived of husbands and "fathers by the nefari ous traffic uf the rum eeller, end they bit to-night, with weeping eyes. and pierced hearts, while a great burden cleaves to their souls which earth can never lift away.,- If I could gather be fore mo to-night the wives who have thus been- plunged into- the fathomless sorrows of widowhood, like the vines ruthlessly torn from the trees to which they clung with deathless tenacity, and the children who have thus been intro duced to the disappointments and trials of orphanhood, like branches rioler.ily . wrested from parent truuks, I would 'say to the rum seller "Beheld the fruit cf your nefarious traffic;" to the rum manufacturer, "There is the work that your poison has accomplished;" .to the farmer who supplies grain to be con '- Ttrted into alcohol. -Thr stand ilia monuments of a crime so black and blasting, that the - very angals turn a Any from the scenes, nnd tne; heav ens drop tears of sorrow. . to which you are a party tb the owner of real es . lata who rents hi3 property, to the rum seller or maker, 'See. before you the result of your leagua.wuh death and your covenant with hell." The blood .of these murdered men cries from the ground for vengeance upon their mur derers. Unless this nation shall awake from its apathy and arrest this wicked . traffic in alcohol, God wilt surely pour cut upon us again the vials of Lis wrath ad indignation. ' i .. . ,. .'
