Correspondence for Ibis column must be written
jlain and grammatically with ink, and on one Hide
only of white paper. Let them be short ,aiid to the
point.
The Fallen Son. Follow him
home from the scene of his debauch.
He is an only son. On him the hopes
of the family hare centered. Every
nerve has been strained to give him
the choicest education. Parents and
sisters gloried in his talents and looked
forward to his fu'ure fame. Alas! al
ready these visions are less bright.
Enter now the family circle. Par
ents surrounded by lovely daughters ;
within that circle reigns peace, virtue,
and refinement. The evening has been
epent in animated conversation and the
sweet interchange of affectionate en
dearment. But there is one who used
to share all this, who was the centre of
that circle. Why is he not here ? The
hour of devotion has come ; they kneel
before their Father and their God. A
voice that used to mingle in lhair prais
es is wanting. An hour rolls away
another hour has gone. Why has all
cheerfulness gone ? Why do those
parents start at evejy footstep ?
ine step ot mat son ana orotner is
heard. The door is opened he stag
gers in before them, and is stretched
out at their feet in all the loathsomeness
of intoxication.

BOX9 SMOblXLi TOBACCO.
There are many causes of intemper
ance, physical, moral and social. One
cause is the pmct'ce of smoking tobac
co. I-am well aware that some smok
ers do not drink, and that many intem
perate men do n Jt smoke ; but I am
: convinced that the practice of smoking
h" ieu many a young man into habits
V of drinking, and has introduced many
to fast life and evil companions. 1 am
therefore greived to see mere boys
smoking cigars and pipes in our streets.
These boys know nothing of the poisou
oud nature of tobacco or the dangers
connected with its use ; they commenc
ed smoking from imitation cf others or
from the false idea that it made them
Jook m'n!y. It is, however, a practice
specially injurious to the health of the
young-. It involves them in expense,
and leads to other evil habits. The
effects of smoking on the health of
boys has recently been investigate J by
M. Deciine. The Medical Times ef
the 13th of July gives a summary of
results of this investigation. M. De
caisne was struck with the number of
boys between the apes of nine and fif
teen who smoked tobacco. He select
ed several cases of smoking ladscf thr
easy class of society residing either in
Pans on in the country. Of thirty
eishi of these lads he found notable
effects to be present in twenty-seven ;
eleven havirg only smoked six months,
and sixteen for more than two years,
eiffht of the boys being from nine to
twelve years of age.and nineteen from
twelve to fifteen. In twenty two of the
boys there were various disorders of
the circulation, palpitations, difficult di
gestion. !s.c. In twelve the blood ex.
hibued a deficiency of globules. M.
Decaisne states that even a limited em
ployment of tobacco produces pile
bloodless appearance, and that ordinary
medical treatment is of n avail while
the practice of smoking is continued.
He also states that boys who smoke
"exhibit a degree of dullness of intel
lect, and a more or less marked taste
for strong drink." It appears that on
giving up smoking these symptoms dis
appear. It is to be wished that every
boy that has engaged in the useless and
dangerous practice of smok ng s'unild
ai once give it up. it is a practire
which cannot give either profit or hon-
i I. - . ,i
or, out wnicn can injure neauti cause a
waste of time and money, and expose
its votaries to temptations to the use of
intoxicating drinks. If I could spent
sj as to reach the ear of every boy in
the kingdom, 1 would say, JJefore you
begin to smoke, ask what jyood you are
likely to derive from it. Will it make
you more healthy, more wise, more ue
ful in your day and generation ? Any
inte ligent boy who asks these questions
mi'st come to the conclusion that smok
ing is better avoided thau middled with.
And further, whoever will look at the
boys who smoke, and contrast their ap
pearance, behavior, and pursuits, with
the appearance, behavior, and pursuits
of the boys in the same class of socipty
who do not smoke, must come to the
conclusion that smoking does not lead
to physical or moral excellence. The
evidence as to the evii connected with
the practice of smoking by boys, when
fairly examined is irresistible. I there
fore exhort every boy who may read
this paper to have nothin? to do with
cigars, or pipes, or tobacco. Weekly
Record.
