We learn from a communication
from J. W. Barnes, residing at Savan
nab, Missouri, that there is no whisky
allowed to be sold in the place, except
at drue-itores And one of these sold a
"man" enough to intoxicate him, a few
days aeo. and the consequence was
the ladies gave him a "call'' and dis
posed of the remaining 'fluid" by
pouring it out. They do temperance
up right in that place ; and so they are
in all northwest Missouri.' Ladies,

INTEMPERANCE.
Almost from time immemorial, yes,
ever since our first parents were ex
pelled from the fairy bower of the
Garden of Eden, to gain Aheir own
livelihood by the sweat of the brow
has this curse of curses been doubling
and redoubling its exertions in build
ing up its strong bulwarks in defence
of society. We see it in almost every
village, town and city intertwining it
self, like a cunning serpent, around
the tendrils of society. We daily read
of poor Heathens sacrificing their lives
before some graven image or idol, by
casting their bodies before en immense
wheel and are crushed to death. Oh
how it makea out blood run cold at the
thought of bein? thus crushed out of
existence. And, yet, in our free
America we not only read of but be
hold our fellowmen sacrificing their
lives to that deadly poison, and meivly
pass it by without one thought, or mak
ing an attempt to reclaim the fallen
from a drunkard's grave. Oh! how
horrible it is to see a brother thus de
grading himself by wallowing in lbs
mire, with bloated visage and glaring
eyes, with no higher feelings than tha
of the dumb brute. What cares he
for the name "Drunkard 1 " Wha
cares he for the many tears and plead-
' ings of a sister, or a mother, or his
broken hearted wife at his desolate
home, and more than either, what re
epect has he for that All-seeing Eye
and the lines that shall be writte.i upon
the record, which he sj soon shall be
called upon to stand before and give
an account for every word, thought and
action.
Watch him as he leaves his heme
Lis little ones, and grief-stricken wife
are gazing after him with the hope he
mav return with the same face and
mind as wren he departed; but, ah
'ere night shall wrap her sable mante
around us, he if found stiggering and
reeling, not knowinc which way to go
follow him to his once happy home
there in one corner of a desul.ua room
sits she whom he won from her happy
home : she, whom he pledged 10 pro
tect in her 1th and prosperity, care for
in sickness and adversity ; sad and pale
she is watching over her children as
tbey peacefully slumber, almost hoping
they may never see the day that ihey,
too, shall feel the disgrace and dishon
or their father has brought upon them.
I ask : are we, as a nation, doing
our djty in trying to banish Interoper
ance from our land ? Are we, as a
people, doing all that is in our power to
blot out this, our country's foulest slain ?
