THOS. W. SHRTOCK, Lodge Deputy,
I.O CJ T.
The Order of Good Templars should
be known to all. Its basis and princi
ples inculcated, as well as the great
amount of good it has accomplished,
should commend it to all real friends
of the great Temperance Reform. In
its objects and operations it occupies a
broad platform, and no one need be
shut out from the role of its blessed in
fluence at its inception, and now it
opens wide its doors for the admission
of the whole family, and grasps all
who may be iDjuired by the intoxicat
ing bowl. Grand idea. What can be
mere noble than to gather the father
and mother, brother and sister all round
our common altar, to consecrate a life
to this great work of humanity.
This Order takes the broadest ground
upon all questions connected with the
temperance reform, and, yet, as u
seems to us, the only consistent position
for acy one to assume who wishes to
cave or be saved, or to assist in the
great work of pushing to the wall the
most giant evil that ever cursed the
earth. The following is our platform
as adopted by the right Worthy Grand
Lodge :
1st. Total abstinence from all intoxi
catiDg liquors as a beverage.
2d. No lincense in aDy form or tin
der any circumstance, for the sate of
auch liquors as a beverage.
3d. The absolute prohibition of the
manufacturei importation aud sale of
intoxicating liquors for such purposes
Prohibition by the will of the people
expressed in due form, with the penal
ties deserved for a crime of such enor
mity.
4th. The creation of a healthy pub
lie opinion upon the subject by the ac
tive dissemination of truth in all modes
known to an enlightened philanthropy.
5th. The election of good honest
men to administer the laws.
6th. Persistence in efforts to save in
dividuals and communities from so dire
ful a scourge against all forms of oppo
sition and difficulty until our success is
complete and universal
Thus, it will be seen, we endeavor
to strike at the root of the evil by mak
ing it an ouiiavt wnerever it is met.
As the use of alcohol in any form or
degree as a beverage, is dangerous and
ruinous, and hence immoral, we op
pose any system or scheme by which
the State is to give legal sanction to the
trafic; and, as it has or should have no
status in morals, so we would allow it
none in law. Believing it a poiscn,
slow and aspiring, but sure, a foe in
sidious and invincible, w e do not believe
the sale of it can be regulated or re
strained by laws however wholesome.
B-jlieviog that the appetite once
formed is too strong to be overcome
while the syren tongue beckons on the
unfortunate to partake el the sparkling
and bewildering draught, we would
carry joy to his heart and enable him
to conquer it by banishing the luring
devil from our midst, and surrounding
this unfortunate victim by attractions
pure, heathy and soul benefitting. Be
leiving that it is ever worse to sell to
persons who have not the habit forme.l
as in this case, you begin at the vi
tals and corrupt the life blood of heart
aud purity of sou!; white on the other j
you are only corrupting the wreck of
what has already begun to totter, we
defy the wisdow of any Legislative
Body to frame a license bill that is not
frought with the most glaring inconsu
tencies and a disgrace to any Statute
Book, and while ostensibly designed to
place the traffic under wholesome re
straints, and throw round society some
measure of protection from the terri
ble evils consequent upon the use of in.
toxicating drinks, the Vender, under
auch law, laughs in the face of and
practically defies the judicial authori
ties while he daily draws thousands in
. t
to me maelstrom of destruction. For
these reasons the Good Templars op
pose tne manufacture and sale for use
a3 a beverage of all intoxicating drinks
in any form and quality. We believe
the license system a device to suit th
moral nerve of our country while Anti
