have given their assent to our general

tion list and advertising patronage. We
have used a liberal share of receipts in
supplying new material, and design.

tures, and enlarging the Herald to an

GAINS OVER LAST YEAR.
At the Charter eleoiLoav in the city
last Monday the entire Republican tick
et was elected with the exception of

feated because of Republicans voting
for the Democratic candidate ( and
right here we will take the liberty of
saying we think they were in very
small business). Last year was the

impression on the Democracy, aci-ihen
we only elected a part of our ticket.
But this time we have made a clean
arie in their might and rebuke them to
such an extent that no one will dare to
repeat the game. We have always
been of that unsophisticated turn of
mind that caused ui to believe that un
der a Republican form of government
the people should ruler, and that men in cuntradicts
tion. We hope Republicans will see
the necessity of standing by nominees,
and fighting off bad men, or such as
they do not wish to vote for, in the con
ventions.

of witnesses examined to prove the con
piracy to take forcible posession of the
War Office and ta defeat the execution
of the reconstruction laws, also to prove
ihe correctness of tbe reported speeches
of Johnson while "swinging around the
circle" with ftasty. We have seen
no detailed rport of tbeevideuce, only
a statement 01 Lie eucstance. The
prosecution was substantially closed
last Saturday, rnd the court adjourned
until tj-day, when the defence will be
gin.
