f57"The Brass Band concert was well
attended last Friday and Saturday even
ings. The playing wa3 excellent and
shows that the boysjeomposing the Band
are determined to bo second to none in
the State. Tho concert was interspersed
with short theatrical performances, wh'ch
wera executed with much skill. We
havo not learrcJ what the receipts of
the two evening were, but from the ap
parent expense which they incurred in
fixing up the stago and scenery we judge
the profits will not bo very large.
Gen Livingston's lecture was one
of the finest of the season. He handled
his subject 'Geclegy" in a masterly
manner, nnd the audience appeared to
be carried along with the speaker through
all the various changes which this mun
dana sphere has been subject to from the
time the process of formation commenced
up to the presrnt, and the imagination
was then directed to tho speculative fu
ture. We cacnot ppeak too highly of
this class of lectures or of the minds that
givo them shape.

GiTTbe New Haven Palluleum tells a
story of a boy wbo was sent from one of
tho rural districts to that city recently,
with a bag of potatoes to dispose of to
the best advantage. Tho boy was gone
all day, and returned at night with fhe
bag unopened which ho dumped on the
floor.
"There's Your Potatoes," said he "go
and sell I cannot."
"Sold anf" wasjasked.
" No; I'vo been ail over New naven
with them, and nobody said any thing
concerning potatoes. Two or three fel
lows acked me what I had in my bag and
I told them it was none of tbeir busi
ness what it was!"
The boy is not unlike hundreds of mer
chants who will promtply call him a fool
for not telling what he had to sell.
They are actually doing the same thing
on a much larger scale than did that boy
by not advertising their business.
tl'I'J placo of a lecture next Monday
evening, there will be a scries of readings
before the Library Association. Several
of our citizens who hav talent in thU
line have consented to take part in these
readings, and we can tell you some of
them will amuse and instruct the audi
ence beyond all expectation. Don't fail
to be present or you will miss a "good

undersigned, your Special Committee on
Sewing Machines, report: That it was
agreed, by the Agents representing the
two competing Machines, to render to
yeur committee, in writing, the peculiar
points on which they based their claim of
superiority, and in testing the machines
each point was to be taken separately,
and after a fair trial, adjudged to the best
of our abi.ity. Each Agent presented his
claims in due form. For the Willcox &
Gibbs Machine, thirty five distinct claims
were made for its superiority, all of
which, on a thorough and impartial trial,
were sustained! For competing double
thread Machine, but ten were present,
two of which were sustuned. (Signed)
