gj"lt is sa l to contemplate the rava
ges of interapcranco in our city. While
we would not insist upon making or en
forcing a prohib.itory law in a country
like this, yet when one of Plattsiuouth's
fair nnd respected ladies is coropil'dto
personally visit a saloon to rcq-iest the
proprietor thereof to not let her hus
bnrid have nhy more liquor, as was the
case a few dajs since, it is time public
sentiment put a check upon drunkenness,
if the law docs not. Our idea of tho
most e'JWtual manner of checking this
cxce?sive and continuous drinking is for
the public to use their tocial power in the
matter. It is far more potent than stat
ute laws, and reclaims rather than pun
ishps. Let society frown upon the men
who are so far gone as the abov? cited
case, find wo will soon have fewer of
them. And what makes tho matter
worse in this case is that the husband
rcfered to is engaged in a business that
is honarable when honorably conducted,
nn-1 one calculated to work groat good cr
great evil in any community in which it ii
prosecuted. "The press is the lever
which moves the world."

i?"Wo understand the City Council
is about to have the ordinances of the
city published in pamphlet form. This
ts a gotd idea; but we call upon them, us
one of the tax payers whose money goes
to pay for thi work, to see that the con
tract is given to the lowest responsible
bidder, und that tho work is done in
such a manner as will not be a disgrace
to the city. This is a matter in which
every tax payer injthe city is.interoted;

CSThe Lodgo of Good Templars in
this city hold their anniversary Festival
at the Brick School Hoase, on Thursday
evening, Cth inst. It has boen. but one
year since this Lodge was instituted, acd
who can calculate tho vast amount of
goad they have accomplished in that
short time. There was, at that time, but
one other organized Lodge in Nebraska;
now thero are many, most of which have
been instituted through the instrumental

are legion. Let all lovers of good roora's
and correct teachings attend tho Festival,
in toking of their friendly feelings to

:5fIn going for or ordering goods,
the great question to be solved is where
they can be had so as to enable tha pur
chaser to tuake the greatest profit If
they can be had near home for about the
sane mor.ov that would have to be raid
at a greater distance, it im certainly an
inducement. Let our dealers in (Jroce
