' 'i i M ' .1 ' I f f ! i, I it, i if I -. U- r glgrirultural EriTATIO OP CRAPE TIXES. 13 y a notice somewhere lately, we saw it mtpd that a crop of grapes in tinpyards cannot be depended on longer thin four seasons, thus forming a seri lu drrtvvbnck to their culiure. If ihi is so there can be but little doubt it is owing to the severe pruning the re ceive. to keept.iein ivithiuthe prescrib ed bounds of the vine dresser. As ia well L'Quun, our native grapes are very luxuriant grower, aud to cut.fii,e their growth to two or three Micks a few feel high is enough to cause any sensible grape to rebel. One thing quite certain, no such fhori-livtd lruiifulneis is observable in the grape when grown on trellises or "racks" used so In-queijtly East, nor when they have the side ct a large building to ramble n. Here they can often be met wiiii many years old, bear ing heavy crop of grapes every year. Cannot a be taken front this to so construct ih suppor 3 for vineyard cuhure, th.it new space may be given a vine eacli yeui , or us its growth seem torquire it. This we are Confident would help the vines retain their vigoi for a number cf years. To grow in ibis style would require much fwwer plants, although at first it might not be uiiiiad to r iant moderately thick, cropping those heavy, it might be desirable u lake out altogether as the permanent ones might require the room. Ahays remembering that to over-fru t the permanent ones might defeat the ultimate object, as there can be but little doubt vines are often much injurtd by early over-bearicg. Cor. Prairie Farmer. SJILI IX W HEAT. We recenily met Air. C. W. Hol Jewell, an old subscriber in Pasquotank Co. N. C. who, like many thousands of others, has been seperated from us ly the war. Among other items he informs us that the "tinui" has been greatly de:rime:ual to ;he wheat crip throughout the State. Tliree years ghe !-owtd 120 ucres of wheat, as fellow.-; Tiie s-etd for 40 acres wa soaked over niirht in ttronj old brine from pork, and then thoroughly mixed with lime by shoveling it over the barn floor. No miiui was found in the crop. For the second 10 acres, the treatment was the iaa.e as the above, except that the brine wis reduced by adding an equal amount of water. This crop con tained soul smut. For the third 40 acres, ihe seed was wet with water only, but well cjated with hme. The crop wis full vt smut. These experi ments seem to prove that lime was not the cura'.ive arcnt, 1n effidual reme dy has been found in blue vitriol (sul phate cf copper). For each 10 bushels of seed vlieat, 1 pound of the i;rio is dissolved in water eiKvujh jut to cover the wheu. Tiie vitriol dis solves quickly in hot water, but cold water may be used by giving more time an I sliring it occasionally. Experi ments show no difference in the effects when the seed is simply wet and then sown, or when it is suffered to lie in a heap and soak for 8 or 10 hours. iVkr. Holiowell siys that during the war lit lle blue vitriol could be got, and that i( sometimes co?t several dollars a pound, ana that those who obtained U had s gooj wheal llitit ihy coull readily sell it at atiigh rr ce for seed, so prevalent was th smut. A gen tIeman now a distinguished merchant of Bos-ton, was oir; day planting potatoes on his farm, a dry old fedow stopped to waich the npeiation. The merchant, more enihu-iasnc than skillful in his farming, was droping five potatoes in each lull- "Ah! planting potatoes squire," remarked Uncle Jerry. "Yes,' replied the merchant, "and if the rot does not take them 1 expect to have a good crop. What time do you think is best to dig potatoes. Uncle Jerry?" The olJ fellow looked into a hill, and replied; "Dig em now you'll never get a bigger crop!" Fbom China. A di:-pilch to the morning pa pets, from Washington saj: "Comniisrioner Newton has receiv?d from his special agent in China a large and valuble co.lecii'ni of seeds, with specimen of sorcho suarand molasses, fionle tex ore-, aud paper made from straw, bamboo, mulberry wool and other ub.-ta.-ce.-; also a large collection of the insects of China, exquiiteiy pre served and arranged, including but terflies of silk worm.
