Scrofula, or King's Evil
s a constitutional disease, a corruption of th
ilood, by which this iluul becomes vitiated
veak, and poor. Dcinij in the circulation, i
K'rvades the whole body, nnd may burst ou
n disease on any part of it. Xo oran is frc
rom its attacks, nor is there one which it ma;
lot destroy. The scrofulous taint is variously
rauscd by mercurial dieasc, low living, dis
irdered or unhealthy food, impure air, liltl
md filthy habits, the depressing vices, end
ibove all, by the venereal infection. What
ver be its origin, it is hereditary in the con
ititution, descending " from parents to childrei
into the third and fourth generation ; " indeed
t seems to be the rod of Him who says, !
vill visit the iniquities of the fathers upoi
lieir children."
Its effects commence by deposition from thi
ilood of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, h
he lungs, liver, and internal organs, is termet
ubercles; in the glands, swellings; and or
he surface, eruptions or sore. This foul cor
up"tion, which genders in the blood, depresses
he energies of life, so that scrofulous cousritu
ions not only suffer from scrofulous com
)laiati, but they have far less power to with
tand the attacks of other diseases ; eonsc
ruently vast numbers perish by disorder.'
vhieh, although not scrofulous in eheir nature
.re still rendered fatal by this taint in the
ystem. Most of the consumption which do
;ima tea the human family has its origin directlj
n this scrofulous contamination ; and manj
les'tructive diseases of the liver, kidneys, brain,
jid, indeed, of all the organs, arise from 01
jo aggravated by the same cause.
One quarter of all our people are scrofulous :
heir persons arc invaded by this lurking in
ection, and their health is undermined by it.
To cleanse it from the system we must renovate
he blood by an alterative medicine, and in
igoratc it "by healthy food and exercise,
