A special correspondent of tho State
Journal was around town last weok,
ami wo extract as follows from his let
tor in tho Journal of tho Crd Inst.
Tho growth of Auburn Is wondeifnl.
and since tho two towns, North and
South Auburn, formerly known as
Shorldan and Calvert, havo united their
fortunes under tho common namo of
Auburn, there Is a good prospoot for a
thrifty place. Auburn has tho great
advantage of a bplenid farming region
around it, and tho land owners aro
wealthy as n rule, it is in the vicini
ty of this place that tho fruit was
gathered which received tho premium
at tho Centennial, and It is from this
locality that Lincoln, and tho western
part of tho state received tho larger
portion of peaches used this year. Tho
crops aro very fine here, and largo
numbers of cattle will bo fed during
coining winter.
Nemaha is tho garden county, and
AubMru tho banner town. Tho Hon.
Church Howo is an important factor
in tho improvement of tho place, and
by bis energetic endeavors is rapidly
building up a town.
TIIE ."REPUBLICAN PLATFORM.
Thero aro several Republican paperB
of Nebraska, who novcr know what's
the matter until the Omaha Jkc tells
.them. If tho Jkc howls they Immedi
ately attempt to yelp in unison, Jf tho
Jkc tells them they nro hurt they at
once pretend to see that somebody has
hit them. Tho platform adopted by
the teceut Republican State Conven
tion was nuidu the object for tho Jkc
to venomously. attack simply bccauBO
It indorsed Valentino for congtoss in
tho third district, when tho papeis re
ferred to Immediately thereafter dis
covered that the platform was weak,
meaningless and ambiguous, especially
as to fundamental Republican princi
ples and railroad corporations.
Tho following are tho resolutions
complained of:
JkAulcutl, That tho Republicans of
Nebraska in convention assembled
stand by the fundamental principles of
(J 10 Republican party as enunciated in
an unbroken line of national and state
platforms, tho chief of which aro free
labor, free spooeh, tho right of every
qualified citizen to voto onco at every
election under tho restriction of just
and equitable election laws; free, non
sectarian schools; sound currency on a
specie basis, under national control;
the raising of national revenues by
taxation of luxuries and articles of
consumption not essential to the com
fort and well being of the people and
from a tariff on imports so adjusted ub
to protect tho Investment of capital in
homo industries; and legislative con
trol of corporations.
liasolvcil, That wo uphold and main
tain tho enforcement by well consid
ered legislation of the change in our
great organic law that prohibits unjust
discrimination and extortion by rail
road corporations, while recognizing
the importance of fostering and pro
tecting them as necessary factors in
oui progress and prosperity; and that
wo look to the honesty and courage of
tho people in their political capacity to
repol encroachments of corporate pow
er upon the rights and principles of
citlzous on one hand, and, on the other
to deal justly and fairly with all prop
erty interests under whatever name or
form, without unjust discrimination
or extortion in tho matter of levying
taxes, or regulating prices of coin mod
It ies or charge for service.
Now if those lesolutions are notcon
cisc, plain, pointed, reasonable, and
good Republican doetrino wo never
saw any that were. And evory Re
publican who hasn't an awful sore
head, or is not a chronic croaker and
fault finder can and do heartily indorse
them.
Ono of the curiflus incidents of this
curious season of politics is tin sum
mary bouncing of tho chairman and
secretary of the Democratic central
committee of Nemaha county, sup
posedly because they wore too friendly
to Church Howe. Ono of them was
Moore, of the Gratujcr. What tho
Democrats of old Nemaha will do for
