while robbing his melon patch.
Mrs. Harriet Bushnell lias bequeath
ed eight thousand dollars, her whole
(state, to the poor widows of Lincoln,
Illinois.
Miss Annie Neibel, who has been for
sovcral months at tho Holdrege, re
turned to her homo in Peru last Thurs
day, on account of sickness.
New Orleans is to haVo tho honor f
being tho first city in the Union to
erect a nioiiumontto a woman. Thu
person to bo thus honored is Margaret
Houghery, the recently deceased bene
factress of the orplrii; asylums that
city.
.Mrs. Richards, who has been in Wis
consin organizing woman suffrage
clubs, says that her greatest opposition
comes from young unmarried women
who imagine that men will not like
them so well if they advocate the wo
man suffrage cause.
Felix McCarthy, John Carlson and
John Meeker, all laboring men of Vails
Gate. Orango county, N. Y., after freely-indulging
in murderous whisky,
filled a bottlo with tho samu stuff, and
started for homo in company. Next
morning tho dead, bruised and bloody
body of McCarthy was found in thu
railroad ditch, and his two companions
are in jail charged with tho crime.
Tho inspiration for young men to
become Republicans comes naturally
with love of country and tho history
of tho patties recorded for tho past
thirty years. Inter Ocean.
"But it is also natural for young men
not remarkable for intelligence, who
have Democratic' fathers to call thom
solves Deinocrats just because "dad"
was a Democrat. Most of thorn are
unable to give a bettor reason.
A farewell party was given to Bert.
Sanders at tho residence of Albert Dil
lon Saturday evening. A largo number
of young people wore' present, soveral
appropriate gifts were presonted to
Bert,, and a very pleasant time was had.
It was a matter of regret that Bert,
was not permitted to bo present to do
honors of the occasion ho having been
detained at Johnson in chargo of the
stock of goods of Iloadloy & Co., but
Mr. and Mrs. Dillon, the genial host
alio hostess, made it pleasant for all
present.
Tho crime reports in the daily papers
take up a largo space. All manner of
heinous, cowardly, beastly crimes are
fearfully numerous. Crimes cannot
bo chargeable to any one, two or three
calises. for tho causes aro numerous;
but tho paramount cause tho great
prompter and iustigator of and mov
er to tho commission of crime, is cer
tainly very perceptible to all. Why
tho prevalence of crimes should attract
attention is more on account of the
misery they entail than tho mere mat
ter of criminal or unlawful .act. If
the commission of a crime would end
its results it would bo of small mo
ment in comparison to what really fol
lows. Innocent people suffer more
from tho commission of crimes than
tho guilty, as a general thing. Wo
pick un a daily paper from a great city
and read tho telegrams: Two wives
lulled by their drunken husbands who
then killed thomsolves; a oustomor
killed by a saloon-keeper; a cutting af
fair, by two drunken men in a saloon;
a froo fight and cutting on tho street
by a party of drunken roughs; a
drunken tramp stabbed a watchman;
a shooting affair caused by whiBky in a
saloon; drunken man fell over a rail
ing ton feet high and was dangerously
injured; a man killed in a bar-room by
another, with whom ho had been drink
ing; a man run over and killed by a
train, being too drunk to got off tho
track; a saloon-keopor kills his mis
tress both drunk; a drunken farmer,
going homo fell out of his wagon and
broke his neck. If just one tho great
est cause of crime- and misery could
be removed tho catalogue of crimes
. would bo shortened to about one-fourth
. its present length.
