Tho Long Branch Railway Accident,
Long Hranoh, N. .1., duly :j. Tho
jury, after two boms' deliberation, re
turned a verdict that tho railroad ac
cident of Thursday last, by which a
son of Commodoie Garrison and two
other persons were killed, was caused
by tho spreading of tho rails on tho
bridge at Parker's Creek, and "wo find
tho Now York & Long Uranch Mallroad
company guilty of gross and culpable
negligence."
Tho coroner, in his charge to the jury,
said: "I do not wish to punish any ono
or screen anybody or inako myself
known as a "coroner throughout the
world" (referring to a remark by State
Senator Applegatei. "t camo hero to
conduct this business to tho best of my
ability." Appleguto offered an objec
tion to this portion of tho charge, and
tho coroner threatened to have him
ejected from the room if ho did not
atop making remarks. Tho coroner
thou continued: "I would not allow
Mr. Applegato to ask questions because
ho was empl&yed as a counsel for tho
railroad company, and will say just
here that two of the employes of the
company waited on meat midnight the
day of the accident, and''
"I object" said Senator Applegato,
"you must not put such matters in
your charge, as they weio not placed
before tho jury In evidence."
"Mr. Applegato will pleaso abut up"
said tho coroner, "or I will have him
put out of the room."
"You dare not have me put out, as 1
have as much right here as you have,"
replied Applegato.
Tlio coroner went on: "When these
men visited me I mistrusted there was
a deep-laitl trap set to c.ttch me. I then
determined that none of the lawyers
for the railroad company should be al
lowed to enter the case. I am acting
under the advico of the county prose
cutor of pleas."
'Ho does not know his business,"
said Applegato.
"1 have done mv duty," concluded
tlio coroner, "and to you gentlemen, 1
leave the rendering of tho verdict."
A Bloody Combat.
Sedali'i, duly .1. Last night a des
perate affray between stockmen and
tlio employe's of the Missouri Pacific
stock yards occurred, in which a man
named IJozarth received probably fatal
injuries. Philip Kopf, tho foreman of
tlio yard, states that Pozarth arrived
liero at (i::'.0 last evening in charge of
six car loads of cattle, and llozarth
complained that tho cattle were being
rushed into the yawls too rapidly. This
tho yardmastor denied and hot words
ensued, when Dozarth observed that ho
had made the trip for the express pur
pose of looking after Kopf, and that ho
was going to run tho yards while his
cattle were mi them. The yardmasler
said that ho proposed to run tho yards
himself, when Uozarth struck at him
with a prodding pole. The other em
pluyoBof Uui MvdM rut-hod to tho as
sistance of the yardmastor, headed by
ono George Jones. Jones struck Po
zarth a murderous blow with another
prodding pole, felling him to t lie ground
and cutting a gash across his forehead
about five inches long. The wounded
man was taken to tho "Stockmen's
Home," in tho vicinity, and a doctor
called. Tno doctor says thai Pozarth
is in a critical condition. These rows
at tho stock yards have become fre
quent of late between tho employes
and Texas stock men.

Utica, Mo., July 5. (Jiand river has
overllowed its banks hero, and spread
all ovo tho bottom east of town, to a
depth of livofcot. It is still rising, and
the wagon bridge is in great danger of
being carried away, as a span of
Mooresville bridge is lodged against it.
The damage to crops here will reach
610,000, many persons losing every
thing they bad in tho way of crops.
The lumber yard near tho bridiro is all
washed awav. a loss of over saoo. The
water is .1 feet deep on tlio floor of tho
largo mill of Johnson & Stevens.
Many head of hogs have been over
taken by the rise and drowned, one
man losing i?."00 in hogs alone. Fam
ilies living on tlio low lanus were
obliged to vacate thoir houses and
move to higher ground. Large quanti
ties of drift aro going down, and many
logs and green trees. The damage will
be much greater if the river continues
to rlso.
A Bad Lot.
St. Louis, Mo., .July .". A Dallas,
Texas, special says: It is reported hero
to-night that within tho next few days
over half tho deputy I'nlted States
marshals In Texas will bo arrested on
charge of fraud against the govern
ment. It la alleged that a big system
of fraud was unearthed by agents of
the department of justice on a recent
four of invostigutioi), conducted prin
cipally at Austin and Dallas. Tho dep
uties aro charged with collecting a
largo oxcess in miloago and collecting
for guards for prisoners when as a rule
no guards have been employed. Tho
allegations of fraud compriso a long
list of similar items. Several deputies
are reported to have fled the stato to
oscupo arrest.
