Wo have received tho drat number of tho Standard, published at Hum boldt, by our old journalistic friend, (ieo. P. Monagan, who was also the founder of the Humboldt Smtind. As it Looks to a Spaststor. Tlio St. Paul Press ii the -Jlth ult.. has the following "Washington special telegram : The investigation ofjb; Xebraska contingent congressman fraud pro ceeds bofoie tho sub-committee of the judiciary committee. Schwenk denies that he made the false certificate in which were placed tho figures of 1S74, with tho statement that it gave the census of 172. Tho question depends somewhat upon a settlement of tlieau-thor.-Jiip of the handwriting by ex perts, and if a lot of these gentlemen are called theio is no telling what they will show. J 11 the number "1872" in the false certificate the figure 2 looks unquestionably like thiiho made by Schwenk, but the s is, entirely different from many specimens furnished by Schwenk. Certain documentary evi dence has been discovered which tho committee has requested your corre spondent not to divulge 'yet. It is enough to say that it indicates that Majors himself is responsible himself for tho consus fraud. The evidence is embodied in census documents which were supposed to be lo.jt. and were not known to be in existenco when the committee made their report. When tiio inquiry was begun Majors swore ho put in the certificate of the census just as it was sent to him, while Schwenk swore he got it from tho secretary of state and sent it in blank. It looks very much now as (hough no ono knew anything about the fraud ex cept Majors, although tlio committee is not yet ready to report. The following Associated Press dis patch of the 20th ult., probably throws sonio light on what tho supposed "lost documents" contains: The committee on judiciary of the house lias recovered the original cen sus roport through which tho commit tee was misled into recommending that Xebraska be given an additional rep resentative in the house. This origin al census report, received tn-day, is properly signed by John Gosper, as secrotary of state, and has attached the seal of state. Examination of the report, however, developed tho faot that thero had been several erasures of the liguro "4," and the figure "2" had been substituted in order that the report would road "census for IS72," and the work of erasing was dono in a bungling manner and substi tution ot tho llguro '2 for tho fimiro l were, mado with an entirely different shade from that used in preparation of the final dooument. The committee aro now trying to fix tho responsibility of tho fraud. In our mind's oyo wo seo our 'delin quent" congressman in his 0x0 room in 'Washington, with his jack-knife out, tho sweat rolling off his classic features, as ho mutilates Gosper's cor terflcate.
