There is good sense in tho following
suggestion from tho Inter Ocean:
There is no occasion for tho investi
gation of; fraudulent pension claims by
tho senate. That body has enough to
do without going Into the detective
business, W hat is needed is a law au
thorizing tho investigation of pension
claims at tho locality whoro tho claim

to send oxparto ovidenco to Washing

Dudley and ho will overhaul tho pen
sion rolls, and do no ono injustice.
Kx-Senator Conkling has tho reputa
tion of uttering bitterer satire than any
of our public men, but it is certainly
tho fact that none of them can shape a
compliment nioro gracefully. Once
when ho was making a speech In the
sonato ho repeatedly turnod his oyes
upon Senator Thurman. and appeared
to address him. Mr. Thurmnn was a
little nettled, and asked:
"When thosonator from New York
turns and addresses his remarks to me
doos ho expect mo to respond?"
"When L speak of tho law," respond
ed Souator Conkling, ' turn to tho dis

Frd Goal Gas Floors a Whole Family,
' Ono morning this week a family liv
ing in Noith Lincoln had a closo call.
It seems the base burner had been filled
in the evening before retiring and the

father aroso, shook down tho fire and
called hltt daughters. Ono caioo into
tho sitting room and immediately
fainted, tho father called for help and
the sistor responded only to repeat the
'scene. About this time tho father was
frightened and the mother responded
to his call or attempted to. but vat only
aa far as tho door when she was forced
to hit down, but managed to my, "Had

thrown open and soon all revived, but
did not recover for several days, in fact
ar not fully right yet. Tho fact de
veloped is, that hardqoalburnera must

bottom to bo safo. Cool sleeping rooms

Tho following sovoro criticism on
state and county fall a is from the Cin
cinnati Ji'armtni World, We hope it
is not applicable to fails in Nebraska:
Our fairs aro now over for tho season.
The officers generally report a financial
success, seen led largely from tho half
aero moio or less rented to gamblers,
witli the oxptess understanding that
they ply their vocation with Jenny
Lind tables, roulette, shuffle board, faro
or kotio bank, nine or ten pin alley,
wheel of foi tune, or any other gambling
apparatus that tho owner desires, if he
will only fork over enough money to
satisfy tho avaricious ofllclals. Tho
gambler wins nine times out of ten
and roups a rich harvest. Thus tho fair
keeps things moving on tho devil's half
aero from its beginning to its closo.
And this Jh permitted by leading men
in our community. I asked tho presi
dent why ho permitted this. Oil! ho
could not help it, tiiey overruled him.
Ask all tho other officers and. thoy
usually make tho same reply. Thoy
weio "overruled." The fact is they aro
all guilty, and wo farmers should join
and en f 01 ce the law on both them and
the gamblers and wipe out this stain
on our agricultural fairs.
Tho nanio fair is a misnomer, for
when tht) farmers fill their hall with
samples of all their productions, the
total premiums don't amount to as
much as somo "spoiting" man will get
on an ill-dispoSitloned horse that won't
work at anything and passes as a plug
among horses, becausoit can outrun an
honest working horso.
