STEV 1CNSON &CHOSS. On last Friday night Watson D. Smith'. Clerk of tho U. S. Courts, at Omaha, was found dead at the door of his ollice, on tho outside, on tho third lloor, in the government building. A pistol ball of largo size had crushed through; his head entering ut the left temple. Mr. Smith was assassinated without a doubt. At u citizens meet ing, in Omaha, where the people turn ed out en mass to express their sorrow and indignation, and to take immediate steps for tho speedy arrest and punish ment of tho murder or murderers, a subscription of 810,000 was raised in si anter. Tho Mayor was authorized by tho subscribers to offer a reward of $.", 000, which has been done. Other re wards for the detection and conviction of tho culprit has been ottered, to-wit: 8200 by the (iovernor of the State (limit of tlio law); 8200 by the Good Templars of Omaha, and 1500 by the "Liquor Dealers Union." Mr. Smith wattcluvk of the V. S. Courts for nearly fifteen years, and was as nearly a per fect gentleman and conscientious chris tian as mortal ever is. Tlio olfenso that led to his cowardly murder could scarce ly have been other than somothlng ho did in tho lino of his duty as a good citizen. His friends and tho people of Omaha generally believe his assassin was somo saloon keeper, as he was chairman of acommi'.teoof temperance mep charged with the duty of enforc ing tlio Slocumb liquor law. The life of Mr. Smith has been threatened fre quently by letter. Tho following written backward is a specimen: "Omaha. October 20, 12 m. "Hold before mirror. J'uullin, tho finding of tho jury, Dr. Andrews' opin ion in to tho cause of the death, etc. The death and inquest occurred Tues day afternoon and evening. The fol lowing from the Nemaha Tinun ex plains what additional measures were taken to ascertain tho cause of the death of Paulliu: Thursday forenoon n post mortem examination was hold on the body of tho deceased, by tho iollowing named physicians: Dr. A. Oppcrman, of Sheridan, Dr. C. F. Stewart und Dr. A. S. Holladay, of Drownvillo: Dr. Liv ingston, of Dorrington; Dr. D. Dell Andrews and Dr. .John Crlm, ol Molila lia City. Tho operation was performed by Dr. A. Oppcrman and Dr. Living ston, assisted by tho other physicians. They found as tho result of the investi gation that tho right chamber of tho heart was full of dark, thick blood, while In the left chamber of the heart tliero was hardly a drop of blood. It was decided that tho cause of the im mediate death of J. M. Paulliu, de ceased, was l-'mbolism or blood clot, which was in no way attributable to the administration of chloroform or tho amputation of the finger. That, witli everybody except the Ig noramuses, effectually settles the ques tion as to the cause of Paullin's death. The post mortem was called by Dr. Andrews, who had freely expressed his opinion as to the cause of the death, and tho result of thoseientillc examina tion proved that Dr. Andrews knew "what he was talking about." as some people seemed to doubt. It is also duo to Drs. Stewart and Holladay to say that their expressed opinions, prior to tho post mortem, agreed with Dr. An drews. Now is your chance to buy stoves, hardware, farm Implements, cheap. (Jo to Thos. Hichards' if you wish any goods in the line, at prices never be fore heard of, as he contemplates mov ing to Nemalia eentei, and wishes to reduce his stock in order to save freighting the goods and adding addi tional cost on thorn, will sell any goods in the line at figures which will pay any one to call and get tho benefit of this offer. Tims. Hiciiauds. Tho hermaphrodite up street thinks it was Dr. Andrews, of Nemaha City, who has been telling a few truths re garding its political rascality, in our columns. It doesn't make any difference however who "Justice" is. he tells the truth all the same, as we know beyond a doubt, and as others know.
