Breaded Eggs. boil hard and out in rowul, thick Blices; popper and salt and dip each in beaten raw egg, then in tine oread crumbs or powdered cracker crumbs and fry in butter, hiss ing hot. Drain oft every drop of greaso and servo hot. Stovo luster, when mixed with tur pentine and applied in the usual man ner, is blacker and more glossy than wIimi mixed with any other liquid, and the turpentino also prevents rust. If stoves arc nibbed with kerosene when put away in the spring thoy will not rust. -I'runo Pies. Tako a pound of prunes and soak them over'night, so that the stones will slip out easily; stow in some water with as many raisins as you wish, and sweeten; use less water than for sauce; when both are softgrato in the rind of two lomons and fill tho pie, allowing two crusts. To make warm weather breakfast cakes, take one cup of molasses, one cup of brown sugar, ncirly one cup of butter, or lard and butler mixed, one cup of sour milk, four cups of Hour, four teaspoonfuls of soda, not heaping but even full, one teaspoonful oaeli of cinnamon, salt anil ginger, one egg; bake in gem tins. These will keep well 01411 week. Tho best food for horses is hay with corn and oats mixed. Oats alono is tho best food for road horses that are driven a good deal at a rapid gait, but for work horses at least unc-half tho grain food should bo corn. When no other grain but corn is fed it is apt to produce a heated and inllammatory con dition of tho system which may induco various forms of disease Whips. Ono pint of rich cream, sugar, lomon. Rub lumps of sugar on the lemon to extract tho oil, then mix with tho cream, but not too sweet; put it in a shallow dish and set it on the ico awhile; when quite cold use tho whip syringe, or if you do not have ono a largo fork will do; as fast as tho froth visos lay it on a sieve to drain. Then place in tho bottom of your jelly glasses any kijul of jolly or jam, and fill the glass vith tho whip. Serve with deli cate cake. -To euro hoaves give the. horso no dry, dusty food of any kind. Snrinklo Jus hay and oats iu winter with very weak limo water or ordinary well water. Avoid clover hay at all times, and if you can raise some nice corn fodder, sown thickly in order to have tho stalks small and tender, and then euro it well, feed this in preforonco to hay. Good, clean com fodder is al most a specific for heaves if accom panied with caro in working the ani mal. AT. Y. Sun. Put into a kettle, lioat and stir till thoroughly molted; then pour into cold water. Greaso thcHmnds with lard or other soft greaso, and work and pull the wax until it is smooth and of uniform color and consistency. This makes a wax thai will not run in hot weather or crack in cold, and can bo used in a cool day, by keeping two balls of it iu a dish of tepid water, using from ono and lotting tho other remain iu the water alternate ly. Gardener, in N. Y. Tribune. Dainty Sandwiches. Chop tho lean part of some cold boiled ham vory lino. Make a dressing by mixing the yelks of two boilod eggs with fourtablespoonfuls of mixed mustard and four of salad oil added gradually; put in a dash of red popper and thin with a littlo vinegar melted butter may bo used instead of oil if preferred. Mix enough of this dress ing with the ground ham to make it slightly moist. Cut all tho crust from a small loaf of fresh bread and spread Hits end vory lightly with softened but ter, then with the preparation of ham, which should bo softand smooth enough to spread ovenly.' Cut tho slice (with a sharp knife) as thin as possible, roll it up and punch tho ends to keep it in place, or, two slices, with a layer of ham botween, may bo fitted neatly to gether and afterward cut into triangles. Tlic Evil of Overstocking Pasture!. The overstocking of land Is ono of tho surest and quickest ways of ruining pastures. It is an everyday thing with mniiiV farmers, who cannot be made to bertuvo that thoy are getting tho full benefit of a pasturo unless the grass is eaten oil' a little taster than it has time to grow: consequently, all who put this method into practice always have bare pastures and poor cattlo. Tho advantages to bo derived from allowing tho grass to gain on tho cattlo (luring tho growing season are many, some of which are tho following: Cattlo hoop growing all tho time and come to maturity at tho proper age. Cattle kept constantly on baro pastures never mature properly; those kept on good pastures do not have to work day and night to satisfy a craving appetite, or uo up all their food in building up a system continually worn down by labor and homi-starvatibn. A good covering of grass is a protec tion to the land in warm weathor; it protects the young grass from tho bad oll'eets of co'ld, dry weather botween the rains of winter, so that new grass will bo growing under a covering of tho old, when that on baro ground will bo , somewhat literally starved to death. Old and now gniss, when oaten togeth er, is bottor for cattlo than all now. while tho soodng of tho matured grass es keops up tho full variety of thoso kinds native to tho soil. Consequently, pastures thus treated produce more food lor stock during Uio year than those kopt conlinualh eaten down to tho baro earth --Exchange. On Furnishing Betl-ltooms. Host Is not moro Important than food, but it Is often harder to got. Tho best rest comes from souud sloop, that great restorer of tirod nature. Sleep is also a powerful medicine, which helps to euro irritability of temper, peevishness, un easiness of any kind, like norvous dys pepsia. It will help euro a broken spirit and it will help cure sorrow. Sleep, to bo perfect and profound and restorativo, should bo so prepared for that not a single discomfort should interrupt it. The bed-room, in which a third of our mortal lives is to bo passed, and that third tho most helpless, should bo a aire sanctuary of cleanl'moss and order, in which no iniurious exhalation can re main for a moment or any trace of un cleanliness ollcnd a single sense. Tho bed-room should have in it tho least possible amount of furniture; nnd whatever furniture thero is in it should bo as free us possible of all that can hold dust and Hull'. Tho furniture, other than the bed, should bo of tho simplest kind. Tho chairs should bo uncovered, froo from slutting of woolen or any other material; the wardrobe should have closely lifting doors, and nil tho utensils closoly lining covers. There should bo no woolen hangings, such as curtains; and strict hygiene abolishes curtains altogotiior, although light hangings of lace or muslin which can bo frcqaontly washed are not as in jurious as other kinds. Tho rollor shade, of some agrcoablo tint, is tho best protection against tho glare of tho sun and tho gnzo of opposite noigbbor.s. A bed-room floor entirely covered with carpet can never bo a clean lloor. Tho carpet holds tlio dust, and dirt and emanations from tho body, with which tho air is charged by every gustof wind and ovory step across tho carpot. Nothing which is unfavorable can bo said ot oil-cloth, or somo of its sub stitutes, as a floor covering for bed rooms, if it is laid down with skill and caro. It should bo closoly fitted to the lloor, and well glued and nailed down at tho edges, so that it cannot bocomo a coating for a thick lavor of dust be neath it. Fixed lirmly in its place in such a way as to form a part of tho lloor itself, oil-cloth can bo cleaned with as much facility as a boarded floor, and it is possible to wax it as per fectly. It docs not retain dust, but shows the presence of dust and dirt, and is a good non-conductor of heat. Tho now artistic designs with which oil-cloth is now stamped make it a tiling of beauty us well as a servicea ble, health-promoting lloor covering. Hugs of various sizes aro particularly adapted to bed-room use, as they can bo carriod out, beaten, shaken, aired and made clean. When possible tho walls of tho bed room should bo painted, or treated in somo manner that will permit of fre quent washing. There is a kind of pa per that will wasli which seems partic ularly useful for sleeping-rooms. If for any roason walls cannot be painted, or papered with this hygienic wall-paper, distemper is tho next best thing for them. The frame-work of the bedstead should bo so constructed that tho bed is raised two foot from tho lloor. In re gard to covering, tho very best is that which gives the maximum of heat with tho minimum of weight. Honcc blank ets aro better than heavy wadded quilts, and a light down covering better than either. Ono oi these thin covorlots takes tho place of two or three blankets, and causes much loss latigue to the sleeper. The actual quantity of covering neces sary, of course, varies according to tho ago and health of tiio sleeper. Tho body should never be cold and never hot while under tho clothes. The first rule is seldom broken, but tho latter is sadly infringed upon, to tho great detriment of health; for the practice of sleeping under a heavy weight of bed clothes is O'isily acquired, and then the body becomes unnaturally, feverishly heated. This condition gives rise to exhaustion, nervous debility, disturbing dreams, and many other gravor evils. It is so injurious that it is hotter to sleep with even too little than with too much clothing over tiie body. In a mod ified degree, this holds good for sleepers of all ages. If the' bed-room is pure and orderly, well ventilated and unobstructed by truck or bric-a-brar; if our consciences and digestive organs aro sound; if we lead simple lives and uncovetous, not over-burdened with the cares of this world, wo shall tail asleep when tho time comes. While our souses are locked in slum'oor, our minds and mus cles relaxed, tho exhausted system will bo built up and strengthened anew for the morrow's work. Only during sleep is this building-up process carried on; and, all other things being equal, ho is the best man. tho strongest, the kindest and most ollicient. who sleeps well and profoundly at night. Christian Union. I'ceslu Cities. It is a hard task to predict where any hive of boes will swarm; but the most accomplished keeper would probably select as tho last place on the globe a populous town liko London or Paris. In both these cities within a mouth swarms have been discovered. Iu London, thoy chose as their now lo.Ig-ing-place an old house in tho crowded Strand, not far from tho oflico of a well-known rural newspaper, tho editor of which was entirely equal to the task of gathering them into a hivo. It is be lieved that thoy strayed away from a Surrey meadow. Tho boes of Paris selected a moro natural place than thoir London exemplars, and fixed themselves upon a tree growing out of the sidewalk of a wolf-known boule vard. Crowds of people gathered around tho spot before accomplished hands were found to remove tho way ward insects to a more appropriate placo of rest. Pruning Deciduous Trees. As a general rule, tho loss shado trees aro pruned tho bottor. Naturo will form a bottor top and a moro harmo nious treo In all its parts than art. Severe pruning is no longer practiced even in fruit orchards by our best hor ticulturists. Tho custom that formerly prevailed, of pruning overgreons au'd other trees, so as to niako top-shaped, ovato and othur fantastic tops, is uo longer regardoil as good taste. If you want a treo with a low spreading top, plant ono that grows that wiry. If you want an ovate or pyramidal top, plant a treo that will make such a top, but do not attempt to force trees to assumo different forms from thoso which nature gives them. Each treo treated in this way is a standing lie, and proclaims to every passer-by tho folly of its owner. Tho truo idea is to niako each species assume as nearly as posslblo tho typical form of that species. To do this, somo pruning is sometimes necessary. If trees aro not crowded If each one has room enough for tho air and sunlight to liavo froo access to it on all sidos, It will round out and develop Its full pro portions, mid if it does not actually at tain it, -will approximate its typical form. Whero tho lower limbs aro in tho way, of course they must ho sacri ficed, but where thoy are not, leave thorn and you will have a liner and moro thrifty treo. If a limo, as is often the case with tho olm in our dry soil, ox- tends boyond tho rest, absorbing tho strength and destroying tho symmetry of tho treo, it should bo cut back whilo yot small. Tho soft maple often throws out limbs that have no firm attachment to tho body, and will sooner or later split oil'; these should bo removed whilo small. Tho idea of cutting back tho top of a soft maple, or any other tree, to prevent it from becoming top heavy, is fallacious; it relieves for tho time biit makes it worso afterwards. If a soft maple, as some of them will do, breaks bodily, and continues to do so, it is bet tor to remove it nnd plant another in its placo. Sovcro pruning lowers tho vitality of any ordinary tree, making it less able to bear tho drouth and heat of summer, and tho cold of winter, and leaving it an easy proy to borers and other noxious insects. " As a strong man is ablo to resist dis ease, so a vigorous treo is able to resist tho attacks of its enemies, whilo a fee bio ono succumbs. So far as possible all linib& should bo removed while small. It is varoly nec essary to cut a largo limb from a troo that has been properly carod for. Dr. J. T. Stewart. Tito Irish Census. The census of Ireland shows a pop ulation of 5,1.09,819, boinpr a decrease of 252,5:18 since 1871. Tho population is composed of 2,522,804 males and 2.G37, 035 females. Tho decline of tho last ten years was spend over all tho coun ties except three. Tho counties which did not decline wore Antrim, Dublin and Kerry, ono of tho poorest and most remote localities. In all the others the decrease went on varying from 10.8, or in round numbers 11 per cent., in Mona gan, to 10.1 per cent, in Tipporary, 10 exactly in Carlow, 3.2 in Galwoy, 1.7 in Cork and 0.7 in Mayo. It is remarka ble that Carlow, the garden of Ireland, and all the other richest tracts of soil, should have suffered most from depop ulation. The religious distribution of tho population was -3,051,888 Roman Catholics, G35.G70 connected with tho Church of Ireland. -185,503 Presbyte rians, 47,669 Methodists and the balance was made up of other denominations. Tho decrease of tho Roman Catholics in tho ten years was 198,979. of tho Protestants 32,328, and of tho Presbyte rians 12.115. During the last ton years dwelling-houses have disappeared to tho number of 48,019, whilo buildings used as accessories to farms and for business pursuits in towns have in creased to tho number of 15.228.
