Mr. Schick came from Sterling, 111., and located in this city about ten years ago, and engaged in his profession. I To was u diligent student, and being am bitious to excel in knowledgo of the law, had few equals in legal1' ability amongst the young lawyers of tho State. Locally ho was a useful citizen anil his loifs will bo felt by this com munity. Ho has for years held posi tions on city and school boards, and always discharged his duty with fidelity and ability. Last fall ho was eloded to tho lower house of tho State legisla ture, and his death makes a vacancy in our county representation. The de- , ceas'ed leaves a young wifo and two small children to grievo for tho irre parable loss of an affectionate husband and father. Tho bereaved ones have th(. sympathy of all. The whole length of the gulch, from No vadavilleon one side and Kureka on the olhei, presents tonight the most desolate scene imaginable. Rnadvas are entirely dest roved, in manv places the rut being five and si leet deep ' and extending for hundreds of vmls. The entire length, for about three miles, is strewn with debris of eeiv kind. At several points between Central and Rlack Hawk the debris is piled twenty-feet high. Kureka street for a quarter of a mile is one mass of rocks and rubbjsh. News was received this morning that nearly the whole business portion of Pawnee City, Neb., was burned last night. Tho lire stinted at midnight in a store-room at the rear of Reeder's drug store and burned every building 011 that side and the block around tho corner, taking everything cleir from Newall & Co.'s to Dun' lire-proof store. Across the street from where the lire broke out, everything was burned from Humph rev's law olllce to tho corner opposite the old wood hotel, including the marble ard and Nicholls iS: jllnsslor's drugstore. The loss includes twenty four business houses, two banks and tho lU'tmblivan printing olllce. Tho safes of both banks were dragged into t ho sti eel and saved. Jiesldes the loss by lire, much damage was done by the removal of properly, much of which was burned in tho street after being carried out.
