yiv. Buchanan, who is doing his first
honest work in the penitentiary as the

medical college in Philadelphia, has
bc-tin induced to give many interesting
items about that institution. He says
he had about ten thousand agents and

many quacks in the United States, and
forty thousand in Europe. Ho

from him at ?30 each. "When these
names are published there will be woe

ihe reverse of being captious The

Lord Chesferfield said in the English
House of Lords, more than one
hundred years ago:
"Luxury, my lords, is to be taxed,
but vice prohibited, let tho difficulty in
the law be what it will. Would you
lay a tax on a breach of the ten com
mandments V Would not such a tax Joe
wicked and scandalous? Would it not
imply an indulgence to all those who
could pay tho tax? Vice, my lords, is
not properly to be taxed, but to be sup
pressed. Luxury, or that which is on
ly pernicious by excess, though not
strictly unlawful, may bo made more
difficult. But the use of those things
that are simply hurtful in their own
nature, and in every 'degree, is to be
prohibited. None, my lords, ever
heard, in any nation, of a tax upon
adultery, because a tax implies a
license granted for the use of that
which is taxed, to all who are willing
to pay 'or it. Drunkeivess is univers
ally and in all crcumstances an evil,
and therefore ought net to bo taxed,
but prohibited.
A study of the census statistics is
convincing that wo are an expanding
people. In the year 1800 the cen
ter of the population was not
far west of Baltimore. In 1810 it was
very near Harper's Perry. Each suc
cessive census has thrown it further
westward at the rate of from five to 1
six miles annually, or about fifty-five
miles with each successive census. In
1870, the center was about fifty miles
east of Cincinnati, or rather a little
north of east. Between 1870 and 1880.
the increase in the West has driven it
estward at about the usual pace, and
the increase in the Southern States has
drawn it in that direction about eigh.t
miles. These two causes acting togeth
er will, it is thought, cause the present
"center" to be located about one or two
miles south of the Ohio river, imme

To all cur Friends.
Havl ag had numberless inquiries for nd
vertlsinR cards from ladles In all parts of
the country who are Interested In tho pre
vailing fashion of making "Card Collec
tions," we aro having printed for them a
set of seven tx-autlful ranis, each In six
colors and on a gold background. In tho
very hlghrst degree of art. illustrating
Shakespcar's ''Seven Arps of Man," We
have spared no expense In thee cards they
are simply Utile art-gems. Our only aim
has been to publish the finest cards yet
sbctwn. Applications for them have come
in so rapidly that nearly the whole edition
Is engaged beforo tho receipt by us of the
cards from the artist. We havo therefore
been obliged to adopt the following plan
for the distribution of the remainder. No
more of the gilt Shakespeare cards, seven in
the series', will be Rent excepting upon tho
receipt of a statement from a grocer that
the poreon npplying for the cards has bought
of him on that day at leat seven bars of
Dobbins Elecirlo Soup, with "price paid for
same. All applying In this manner will
receive the full set of seven cards gratis by
mall. This will Insure us that our friends
and palroisgt their share of these benntl
ful designs, although It In no manner re
pays us for the cost of tha cards. Your
erocer has the soap or will get It. and the
purchase by you of seven bars of lt nt one
time will secure for you gratis seven really
beautiful cards. The soap Improves with
age and Is an article of necessity In your
hon-p every week. Thereforo you are not
a.ked to buy a useless article, but ono triat
yon!mut havb anyway, riease Fend us
yonr applications at once, and tell your
lady friends making "Card Collections" to
do the same. Yours, respectfully,
