The side-walks and sluice ways on
Main street, at present, are most slov

regulated and cleaned. The eide
walks are too crowded with boxes,
plows, barrels and nearly everything'

to walk upon they should be uuob-1

filled with 6traw, hay, hair, boxes

It is possible thatftbe Denver line
of the B. &, M. railroad company will
not be built through Beatrice. We
say it is possible, yet it is altogether
probable that it will be so built. We
have thought so all along; aud al
though the wiseatare liable to be mis
taken, we are stronger in that belief
since the filling of a certain instru
ment iu the Clerk's office of Gage
county on the 25th ult. which is now
a matter of record. This iustrumeut
is the mortgage issued last July by
the B. & M. Co. to Wm. H. Forbes
and W. J. Ladd, of Boston, for the
purpose of extending its branches iu
this State, aud covers two of their ex
tensions, in addition to a line to be
built from Red Cloud to Beatrice.
This is the language of tne mortgage
from Bed Cloud to Beatrice. The
language is clear, and the italicised
words ooour three times. Moreover,
the road is to be built through the
countiesof Webster, Nuckola, Tbayer,
Jeflersoo, Gage, Johnson aud Nema
ha, to Nemaha City. This is the stip
ulation, at least, in the mortgage. By
the southern survey, the road would
necessarily run through Pawnee Co.,
aud it will be seen that that conuty is
not named In that route. Beatrice
