His Successful Journey to IVcir York in Search of a Wife, at the Ago of Seventy-Seven. TJnclo Dan'l Onderdonk is one of the ;p!Uriarchs of Rockland County. He la a cousin of the well-known Bar more brothers, pIanoforte;manufac turera of this city ,f nnd l the favorite nephew of the venerable Mr. Effle Barmor?, who, in January next, will be one hundred years of age. Uncle Dan'l himself la a trifle over ?eventy eeven. Up to last spring the old man lived by J himself in a picturesque, white-porched cottage, embowered in trees, on the Rockland Lake road, and under the shadow of the Rock land Mountain. Sweeping willow hanga over hia front gate, the thick blossoming clover springs up luxuri antly over his lawn, and an old-fssh-iouod well-sweep.'beariug a moss-covered bucket and sinking into a deep, dark well of coolest and sweetest wa ter, occupies another corner of his lit tle domain. Every year the fut acres surroundlnghis homestead bear a rich harvest of corn, potatoes, cabbage and other garden truck, which Uncle Dan'l iakesfdown toJXyack and ships to the buyers in Washington Market. The buttergand'eheeee raised on Un cle DauTa place are extra, and; the middleman who secures the refusal of it for the season la considered fortu nate. About three years ago Mrs. Onder donk, Uncle Dan'l's excellent help mate, died.'after a wedded life of up ward of fifty years.SIt was a sad blow to the old man, who, throughout his long career, has been one of the most afFeotionate of husbands. After Mrs. Onderdonk died and wa3 buried he became inconsolable, and declared he could not be the same man again un til ho got another wife. He talked the matter over with Thomas JefFer eon Tallman one day in the haying field, and the upshot of the matter was that Uncle Dan'l determined to go down to "York' and get a wife. "I haiu't been down in years," he BGid, as he bade good-bye- to Tallman " at the crook in the road and jerked hi thumb in the direction of the city. "I hain't been down in years, but I guess thero's plenty of women there that'll have me. It's changed since fifty year'ago If there ain't.7' He put on his long brass-buttoued coat, high hat, and took in hn hand his staff, whloh he always used to as sist him in walking. He got off at Washington Market, and walked along the stands until he oiudp to 254 Country row. Then he paused. There was a buxom, auburn-haired young woman behind it cutting up lamb. Her plump bare arms looked attractive In the sunlight as Bhe rais ed the oleaver aloft and brought it down on the firm, hard meat. Uncle Dan'l thought her pretty, and paused to take a long look. Presently he got into conversation. "Are you a married woman?" he asked, with just a bit of trembling In his voice. "No." "Old maid?" "No." "Widder?" The fair butchered nodded her head, and Uncle Dan'l smiled a sig nificant smile. "Supposin' you havelroe?" The hutchereas blushed and Bald hastily that that couldn't possibly be. Shejthought too much of her laPt hus band, and beside had four small chil dren to provide for. Then she hesi tated for a moment, and added archly: "But I've got a Bister " "Is she a widder? Is she as good lookin' asjyou? Where Is she?" asked Uncle Dan'l, somewhat .Hur riedly and all in a breath. "No. She is a few years older than I nm, and a good deal, better looking, I can assure you. I'll give you her address fand a note of introduction, and you can go and call on her if you want to." "Give me the note,', said Uncle Dan'l, energetically. The auburn haired standkeeper wrote neatly on the back of one of her business cards: "Mies Sarah Ann Gibson, 25 Domin Ick street. Introducing Uncle Dan'l Onderdonk of Rockland." And Un cle Dan'l pocketing it, made his way out of the crowd. In fifteen min utes his snow-white hair, long staff, and generally venerable appearanoe, was attracting a crowd of gamins and street loungers in Dominiok street. Uncle Dan'l marched up to 25. whloh bore the sign, "Millinery aud Dress making," and used the brass knocker with a vigor that made the house re sound. A female head was popped out of the window. "Why, what's all that noise about?" "It's we, Uncle Dan'l Onderdonk from Rockland County, oomo to mar ry ver!" explained the old man. "Be quick if you want to catca the three o'clock boat back!" There was a scream, a popping back of the head, a scurrying through the ball above, and a banging of doors on .11 sides, all of which, however; did t iu the least disconcert Uncle Dan' He stood there patiently un- le T was admitted. In the front 1 he found a woman as buxom ington Market. She was, perhaps, ten years older, ana had darker hair and eyes. Uncle Dan'l explained blB business, told her about his farm in Rookland, how his wife had died, how he got tired of keeping bachel or's hail all alone there by himself, and must have a helpmeet. Then he asked her lo be his helpmeet. Miss Gibson protected that Bhe was aston ished ; that she didn't dream of such a thine, etc., and that she must have pome time to reflect. "AH right," replied Uncle Dan'l, though somewhat reluctantly. "I'm cotnin' down again in two weeks with a load of truck, and I'll give you till thn to think over it. By the way, what religion are ye?" "I'm an Episcopalian," replied the lady. "And I'm a hard-shell Baptist. Baptifet and Tlseopal goes well enough together though. What's the difference whether you only sprinkle a man or half drown him, so long's it's a savin' ordinance both ways?" A fortnight later, when the Book land Count3' patriarch called at 25 Dominick street, he found the dress making sign taken down and several trunks and ,boxe8 in the hall packed and corded for shipment. The lady to whom he had proposed was in the front parlor arrHyed in her Sunday best. After exchnngiug asmack that made the glass in the windows rattle, the patriarch pioked up his hat and staff, and said : "Put on your bonnet and shawl, Sahrer. I'll leave it to you to pick out the minister. Only get a 'Pleco pal. They do it up in flner style." Miss Ginson was a member of St. John's Chapel, andjshe preferred to have one of the clergymen attached to It. At Variek street the pair board ed a Sixth-avenue car. At Forty-fifth street they got out and crossed to the house of the Rev. Dr. Sullivan A. Weston InJFifth?avanue. The doctor, who ischaprain of the Seventh regi ment, is reported to have married more couples than any other three clergymen in Trinity Parish, received them in his study, and shook hands heartily with bride and bridegroom. "Why, what brings you here, Miss Gibson? Who is this pleasant old gentleman with the white hair your father or grandfather?" Uncle Dan'l grasped the doctor's arm and whispered : "I ain't neither of 'em. Elder, but I'm'going to be her husband in about Ipii minutes!" The doctor was at first taken aback, but he laughed aud shook hands- with the old man, and congratulated him upon his good fortune in getting such a wife. Thon Uncle Dan'l put his hat on the table and his staff in the cor ner, and standing up alongside his bride, the pair wore duly pronounced man and wife according to the rites of the church. In the marriage certifi cate the age of the husband was stated at seventy-seven and the wife at forty-seven. Meantime there had been great ex- oitemeut in Rockland. Anumborof aged spinsters and relicts of farmers thought it was an outrage that a man with a farm like Uncle Dan'l should go and get married to "one of them York wimmin" one so much young er than he was, too. The majority of the neighbors, however, approved bis action, and it was determined to give a grand "scimmerton," or wedding serenade, in honor of the plucky pa triarch on his return. Uncle Dan'l got word of it, and spent the two weeks of his wedding tour in "York," at his sister-in-law's. When ho did come he left his wife behind for a day or two, aud drove up to hia house after dark. His neighbor?, Thomas Jefferson Tallman, John Edward Tallman and Abraham Tallman, to gether with a uumber of Onderdonks and Blauuelts, came to his house, blew horns, drummed ,on tin pans, and fired off guns and pistols under the auppoBitiou that Mr. and Mrs. Onderdonk were under the roof. Meanwhile Uncle Dan'l had ample preparation in the way of Jamaica rum, lemon peel and sugar, and pipes and tobacco, and the festivities that followed left those of Jackson's days far behind. Mrs. Onderdonk arrived the next day, and has lived most hap pily with her hu&band ever since. 2T. Y. Sun. SELECTED ITE3IS.J A Mississippi correspondent of the San Francisco Chronicle says there are only two men that can get the negro vote of the South, and these two are Grant and Sherman. The Btock of silver in the Treasury continues to accumulate, despite the large amounts paid out. When tender, take the meat up and remove all bones. Put these back In to the kettle and boil, for two hours. Then strain the liquor and set away until the next day. When wanted take off the fat, put the soup into a clean pot, and add pepper, salt, an onion, a half-tablespoon of flour mixed in cold water, and elices of potato. Boil thirty minutes and serve hot. 'Buy a trunk, Pat,' said a dealer. And what for should I buy a trunk?' rejoined Pat. 'To put your clothes In,' was tho reply. 'And go naked?' exclaimed Pat; 'not a bit iv it.' A dog Drowned by a Coon. On Tuesday last a very valuable dog belonging to Mr. White, of Sauvie's Island, while Btrolling around through the timber near the slough, came upon a coon's trail and followed it to the animal's hiding place. Af ter considerable digging and barking the coon was routed and took to the water, and after it went the dog. The fight wb9 a life-and-death strug gle, but the coon wae too cunning. As the dog approached him he seized him by the nose, and 6ank beneath the surface, pulling thedogs head uu der water. The process was repeated until the dog was drowned, and his coon8hip swam to the shore, and dis appeared uninjured. Portland Ore gon) Bee. . m A prominent oitizen was observed a short time since sitting on a beer keg in front of amending saloon, ap parently exhausted to a last degree. Another happeued along, and with considerable concern asked, what was the matter. "I've beonto church," sighed the weary one. "No!" "Factf first time In eight yearB, though. Whew!" "What church did you goto?" "The Episkipple. Whew I" "What the devil ails you, man-?" "Well, it ain't no place for a man to go fo that puts In a week's hard work, and wants to rest on Sunday. Potter, made in congress several years ago, which was read.Mn the "democratic conven tion of 1876 as an argument against his nomination for governor; "The theory of equality among states is right. I was myself an extreme state-rights man. I am about to de clare what I presume few men in the house would venture to admit that if I was to make a future government for the constitution of rising states, I would put a provision iu it whereby a sufficient number or proportion of those states might go out 'of the un ion whenever they pleased ; for I be lieve good government cau iu the long ruu only be maintained by being in accordance with the interests of those who are under it. I am convin ced that whenever the real Interests of a great section prompt it to go out of such a union it should be allowed to go." - - This is what Robert G. Inger3oll sayBof the women : "I tell you wom en ore more prudent than men. I tell jou, as a rule, women are more truthful than men ten times as faith ful as men. I never saw a man pur sue his wife into the very ditch and dust of degradation and take her in his arras. I never saw a man stand at theshore where Bhe had been mor ally wrecked,. waiting for the waves to bring back even her corpse to his arms ; but I have seen women do it. I have seen women, with' her white arms, lift man fromUhe mire of deg radation and hold him to her bosom as if he were an angel." Graham Biscuit. I set ray sponce with wheat-flour over night; in the morning I put the batter In' a large pan, and add as much warm water as I need, two large tablespoona of short ening (for a largo dripping pan), spoonfuljofsoda, teacup of sugar, salt, stir all together, then add all graham, or part flour is good for a change. It is not to be stirred too stiff. When it will drop off tho stick easily it la right. Leave it in the pan to raise, then mold in biscuit. A Stalwart War Democrat. Gon.
