F. B.Tilliney,
sale of liquor came instantly to au
end throughout our territory, and
where it continued, it was done se
cretly, as other things are done in vi
olation of law. The manufacture of
intoxicating liquors was entirely stop
ped, so that in the state there was ab
solutely none produced, except cider
which might be made aud used for
vinegar. The effect of this policy of
prohibition to the liquor traffic was
speedily visible in our work-houses,
jails aud houses of corrections. The
jail of Cumberland county, the most
populous of the State, bad been bad
ly over-crowded, but within four
months of the enactment of the law
there were but five prisoners in it,
three of whom were liquor sellers,
put in for violation of the law. The
jails of Penobscot, Kennebec, Frank
lin, Oxford and York were absolutely
empty. The inmates of the work
houses were greatly reduced m num
ber, and in some of the smaller towns
pauperism ceased entirely. But, dur
ing all this time, in every part of the
country, reports were industriously
circulated that the law was inopera
tive for good, aud that liqour was
sold as freely and in as large quanti
ties aa before, the law. These fabe
slatemeuts were industriously and
persistently made . everywhere by
those interested in liquor trade, aud
by those impelled by appetite or pas
sion. It is sufficient for me to say
here that the Maine Law, from the
first, has been as faithfully executed
as our other criminal laws have been
though there has been, at certain
times, and iu certain localities, con
siderable complicity with the violat
ors of it, on the part of many officers
of the law, so that the legislature has
at last provided heavy penalties for
the punishment of prosecuting offi
cers, justices of the peace aud judges
of muuicipial and police courts, in
case of failure in their duty. I am
glad to be able to say that judges of
our higher courts have, from the first
been true to their dutyjin the admin
istration of this law, as of all others.
In much the larger part of Maine, in
all the rural districts, in the villages
and smaller towns, the liquor traffic is
absolutely unknown ; no liquor-shops
exist there, either open or secret.
Tfiel raffle lingers secretly only in the
larger towns and cities, where it leads
a precarious and troubled life only
among the lowest and vilest part of
our foreign population. Nowhere in
the State is there any visible sign of
this horrid trade. The peualtisof the
law, as they now stand, are sufficient
to extinguish the traffic in all the
small towns. The people of Maine
now regard this trade as living,
where it exists at all, only on the
misery and wretchedness of the com
munity. They speak of it every
where, iu the press, on the platform,
aud in the legislative halls, as the gi
gantic crime of crimes, and we menu
to treat it as such by the law. For
some years after the enactment of the
law, it entered largely into the poli
tics of tho State. Candidates were
nominated by one party or the
othefyyUh, refsrenGe.tollieJr proclivi
ties for rum or their hostility to it,
and the people were determined in
their votes, one way or the other, by
this consideration. Now, the policy
of prohibition, with penalties
stringent enough to be effective, has
become ar firmly settled in this State
as that of universal education or the
the vote by ballot. The Republican
J party, in its annual conventions, dur-
all these years, has affirmed,
What a Shark Swallowed.
The following letter, written by one
of the officers on the British bark
Lutterworth, has been handed us
with the request to publish it: While
the Lutterworth was laying becalmed
in the tropics, a large shark was ob
served swimming around the ship.
A large hook with a chain attached
was baited with a four-pound piece of
pork. The shark made for it and
bolted it. In hauling up tho chain
parted, aud he coolly swallowed the
hook, chain, and pork. Another
hook was then baited, which he in-H
stantly seized, biting a three-inch rope
in twain, and also swallowing it with
auother four-pound piece of pork.
Another hook was then baited with a
similar piece of pork, and with this
the shark was caught and lauded on
our deck. All hands cleared from
him, for he was in a terrible flutter.
His tail was cut off with Ihe carpen
ters ax, which quieted him a little.
Some said it was not the same shark
we had hooked before. He was cut
open, when we found the two large
shark-hooks and chain and rope
snugly coiledaway, with eight pounds
of pork, in his locker. It seems al
most incredible, but all bauds are
witnesses to it." Portland Oregon-iau.
Jedediah Buxton, the famous peas
ant who could multiply nine figures
by nine in his head, was once taken
to see Garrick act. When he weut
back to his own village, he was asked
what he thought of the great actor
and his doings. "Oh!' he said, "he
did not know ; he had only seen a lit
tle man strut about tho stage and re
peat seven thousand nine hundred
and fifty -six words."
A farmer who has tried it, speaks in
the highet praise of gas tar for paint
ing wagon wheels, stating that it
tightens tires and spokes better than
anything else that can be tried.
Charcoal is a good food to make
hens lay. Burn a few corn cobs and
wet them out as soon as they are in
coal. Feed to hens and their eggs
will increase.
Good Breed int
That man who is scrupulously po
lite aud respectful to all women in
public but habitually saves course
manners and vulgar language for his
own wife and daughters, is,no gentle
man. He is only an imposter. The
young man who oils bis hair, puiB
sweet odors on his pocket handker
chief and bows with charming ele
gance to Miss Arabella Spriggins and
her lady friends, and goes home to
sneer at his mother, aud treat her
with familiar discourtesy, is a peuch
back imitation only of a gentleman.
Genuine good manners and gentle
breeding should begin at home. As
a rule the men in community who
are the most trusted are the best men
at home. When a man opens his
front gate only to meet his wife's face
at the door radient with pleasure,, aud
hears the shout from the children,
"Papa is coming !" it is safe as a
rule to lend that man money. He is
honest aud will repay if he can.
THE NEBBASKA PAEMER.
Wo have frequently called attention to
the many virtues of that excellent Agricul
tural Monthly, The Nebraska Farmer.
Its correspondence covers everything desir
able to our farmers, and is beautifully illus
trated with cuts of stock and designs of
new and improved machinery, making it
one of the most tasty and useful publications
of its kind in the world. Wc have just
made arrangements to lurnisn it to our
readers, in connection with our paper, at
greatly reduced rates. Call and examine a
copy, or send stamp to The Nebraska
Farmer, Lincoln, Neb., and get a sample
copy free, and examine it at your leisure.

When we thought the time had
come for it, we demanded of the Leg
islature that the law ofliceuse,' then
upon the statute books, which repre
sented the publio opiuion of the old
time, should be changed for a law of
prohibition, representing the improv
ed publio opinion of the present time ;
and, after two unsuccessful attempts
to procure such a law, we obtained
what wo desired, an act of prohibi
tion to the manufacture and sale of
strong drink a measure for which
we had labored long and industrious
ly for many years. At the time of
sue enactment oi mis statute, now
known as tho Maine Law the world
over, the liquor traffic was carried on
extensively In the State, wholesale
and retail, precisely as it is now in
New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania
and in every other state where that
trade is licensed aud protected by the
law. The Maine Law weut iuto oper
ation immediately upon its approval
by the Governor, and by its provisions
liquors kept for sale everywhere, all
over the State, were liable to be seiz
ed, forfeited and destroyed, and the
owners to be punished by fine and
imprisonment. Tho municipal au
thorities of the oities and towns al
lowed the dealers a reasonable timo to
send away their 6tock of liquors to
other States and oountnes, where
their sale was permitted by law. The
liquor traders availed themselves of
this forbearance of tho authorities,
Tho llPntli ponultjr, oilnalialctorod by
the rope, has become woefully per
verted from its original plan to a
shameless disgrace to our civilization.
This is no presumtive assertion, but
must bo the conclusion of every intel
ligent miud. The deplorable mishap
attending the hanging of Cassler at
Seward, Neb., by which a ribald mob,
by breaking down an intervening
wall, witnessed tho execution, aud
several other equally ridiculous in
stances of late, suggest some grave
doubts as to whether this method of
capital punishment Is not at the pres
ent timo more demoralizing than
healthful to the interests of society.
The savage and debased satisfaction,
the grim aud repulsive pleasure, tho
heartless inhumanity with which
these scenes aro witnessed by the
masses, must necessarily be accepted
as a lamentable index of the tone of
the communities in which they occur.
Such cases are shocking mockeries of
the significance of the death penalty
and indicate a standard of publio char
acter little above that of the felon
himself. They denote depraven pas
sions, a lack of all delicacy and sen
sibility in the participants, and un
mistakably point to the fact, that
still underlying the general intelli
gence and refinement of the publio, is
that element of coarser passion aud
brutality which a century of moral
aud 6ocial progress has not extin
guished iu the national character,
and which for its assertion only
required somo such inceutivo as that
at Seward last week. The Spanish
bull-fights, agaiust which we raise
our voices in pious horror, are tenfold
less barbarous thau such an exhibi
tion as this. Indeed, it is a question
whether, as the nation advances in

The horror expressed by the" New

that the south is said to be plotting
for a revival of the civil war, movps
the New York Commercial to remark
that thero were mauy democrats who
were also horrified twenty years ago,
when it was said tho south meditated
a forcible secession ; but that did not
prevent the war. "Can tho World

outside of empty, gushing speeches

uneasiness will be removed from the

in tho actions of the south discontent

There ba9 been a great revival in
Wales. Iu tbe moonlight nights of
the past few weeks scenes were enac
ted rivalling those of Martha's Vlue
3ard. At Rboudu Valley young men
tore off tbeir studs aud gilt watch
chains and cast tbem to the earth ;
girls tore their earrings from their
ears and flowers from their Bkirts, and
scattered them to tbe wind , while the
preacher exhorted In tho Welsh
toungue until vast throngs arose from
the kneeling posture of humiliation
in which they had been listening,
and executed a wild, unooutb dance
until they fell exhausted on the earth.

A Good it. an for -washing Stock
ings. A good plan iu washing stock
ings, now that colors are eo largely
used, is to roll tbem, after being rin
sed, into a piece of white linen, and
squeeze it to remove all the moisture
possible, then dry, and the stockings
look new again. A small spoonful of
spirits of salts in the water will be very
eillcient in keeping the color. Globe

A German physician has demon

habit. He has taken tbe trouble to
collect information as to tbe habits in
this respect of several persons who
have lived to au advauced age; and
be finds that in a majority of the cases
the long livers have indulged in late
